Our continuous injury woes!

In 2006 we were blaming the lack of training facilities regarding our injury woes. Whilst otherclubs at the same time or a little earlier were really having major issues such as soft tissue injuries- St Kilda, to name one, blamed the surface of the ground. Since going to Casey ,although our tanking was a major factor this last season ,we seem to get our fair share or more so, since going to Casey. As we read today,Wonaeamirri has done another hamstring, surely we must look into the causes of our soft tissue injuries. Maybe we need to analyse our football department further regarding our Doctors etc.. in this area,to prevent these injuries, especially reoccuring. We cannot afford to have issues similar to Joel Smith happen to our wonder players such as Watts, Scully, Trengove etc.. Need to do something & NOW.

Austin Wonaeamirri re-injuring his hamstring hardly calls for a wholesale review.

I based my thread on Wona- and his continuous soft tissue and knee problems and furthrermore Rivers where it was reported in the Herald Sun yesterday, that this year is the first proper pre season for 5 years that he has beenable to do. Col.Sylvia had his first pre season last year ever. These are the reasons I think a review is needed. And whilst we are still half way through our pre season, thr timing is fitting.

I thought most of our players were in good nick this year. This could be due to our resting players and the opportunity for early surgery. Injuries happen all the time at all clubs, sometimes players have a bad run. Col was a result of too much training for a young player. All the young players are now eased into modified training programs to counteract this.

Can I start it..?

That Bohdan Babiczuk is useless. If we had a decent... uh.. what does he do? Anyway, if we had someone else we'd have won at least one flag in the last 3 years, maybe even 2.

This is all completely his fault.

Continue.

Another hammy. Is this the beginning of the end for Wonna? He missed all last year, can he afford another year?

A year for a hammy..?

If you have it in mind that he missed all of last year with a hammy, then you've obviously forgotten it was mostly due to a meniscus tear in his knee.

Relax...

In the latest Melbourne FC DEC.2009 Edition mag-it states Bohdan Babijczuk as our High Performane coach- well I hope he can get them and keep them on the track.

On our injury problems, I've noted previously that our injury woes in recent times can be traced back to a game that we won comfortably against the Western Bulldogs in the latter part of the 2006 season. Up to that point of the season we were having a reasonable run with injuries but in that game we lost Aaron Davey and Byron Pickett who were both firing at the time, to hamstring injuries during the game. Travis Johnstone also strained his hammy and pulled out of the next game against lowly Carlton which we lost after a couple more players went down with injury during the course of the match (Cam Bruce was one from memory). That defeat probably cost us a top four place and we kept going downhill losing players on a weekly basis until we were knocked out of the finals by Freo. The injuries I remember from late in the season were Clint Bartram, Matthew Whelan and Mark Jamar.

The past three seasons have seen us continuing to endure a devastating injury rate but I don't think we can confine the injuries to a common cause, type or denominator. It's just happening and the injuries come randomly.

It's disappointing that we have Wonna on the injured list already but most clubs have the odd injury worry at this time of year. There's no need for an inquiry just yet but if the injuries keep happening, I suppose it might not be a bad idea for someone independent to look at how we prepare our players.

i think if i remember correctly he was the bloke that got the arse from the hawks after a poor run with injuries. i'm certainly not convinced he is the best man for the job. his record is not good at all.

I welcome your imput however never ever was the suggestion that an inquiry was needed. Like everything in life, a review is always required as an ongoing mamagement tool. One of factors in the review are the resources applicable-have we got the right ones and/ or do we need more. I was actually amazed when I read in the latest Melbourne F C mag- that we now have 10 personnel in our list /recruitment area whilst only 7 in our fitness , pre season staff .A review may show up that we might be satisfied with what we have got right now.Unfortunately we do not know how many of our players are injured or in rehab- but the papers report that Garland, Meeson, Strauss, Blease and now Wona are at least in this unfortunate situation. This is the reason I believe we should consider our position now- then realign after the Xmas break.

I respect your points to the effect of our problems in 2006 however it was Bomber Riley whom told me the guys bodies could not stand up to such a long year without the right conditions.(maybe that may include pre training.)

my thoughts are, and maybe they are a long shot, but could the extra travel in a car out to Casey be a factor in all these soft tissue injuries?

I remember hearing an interview with Brock after he left the club and remember him saying the extra travel out to Casey was one factor to why he chose to leave, as it tightened his muscles sitting in the same position for up to an hour and a half

Dont you think that MFC undertake a full review of all aspects of the Club each year? Particularly given the past few years of injuries.

And as WJ said well, injuries occur for a variety of reasons. You are taking Riley's comments in a context that clearly weren't meant.

You are splitting hairs between the use of the words "inquiry" and "review"

Pretty hard to win a flag from 16th i would've thought.

Likewise I welcome your imput too but Reilly wasn't the senior coach in 2006 but in 2007 when we died at the end (but still beat Carlton in round 22).

Who knows- however it maybe a factor to consider.Wonaeamirri was travelling from Braybrook this time last year virtually or slightly longer than Brock had to travel.

I don't think even the Great Captain Jack Sparrow coaching us would have got the MFC to a flag in the last 3 years.

The Good players were coming to the end of there span, some played 12 months too long.

Footy is a brutal game and you cannot always protect against injury.

Look at Hawthorn in 2008, sure they won the flag and good luck to them, but the players paid a heavy price the next year.

its 2 weeks before xmas, i can handle a couple of hammy's now.

who was the crows player who did the knee last week-now that would be worse...

Just for your knowledge - I'm bald.

However, furthermore, all I'm suggesting is the MFC look into the matter. An inquiry,to me, is a systematic investigation often as a matter of public interest .I do not any member /supporter of the MFC would want our opposition to learn from any investigation. A review is a reappraisal or evaluation.

To me, similar but different. One which could be done quickly and be able to move on during now and when the players resume in January 2010.

Hope this explanation meets with your approval,R.R.

Aussie will be back after some Christmas pork with apple sauce. And a few fireworks on New Years Eve, he will be back before you know it. Whenever there is an injury during pre season, there seems to always be some concern regarding training technique aspects/ schedule. Don't forget Aussie has missed quite alot, and had been training well of late. I am sure Aussie and staff would now be listening to his body a little more closely whilst pushing his body hard on the track. I wish him well in rehabilitation.

uh... I was being facetious.

I think anyone who blames BB for the players' soft-tissue injuries, let alone for not winning a flag in the lat 3 years, is a complete and utter moron.

And that player was Andy Otten.

And yes, I wonder if anyone is stupid enough to call for Neil Craig's head after that...

I am glad we cleared that up, you usually write very inciteful posts on here so i was wandering where the logic came from!!

i hope i never have to live through an era like 2007-2009 ever again.

3 years of not once considering september....Hideous.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
