A numbers' game

Surely in the tradition of red heads Blease should get number 1 after Strawbs O'dwyer

Funny you should say that. Just yesterday I was reading about Bluey Adams and thinking that there was more than a passing resemblance to Blease.

  • Both bloodnuts
  • Both blisteringly fast
  • Both natural wingman/midfielders
  • Neither very tall
  • Both similar facial features

Now, I am way too young to have ever seen him play, so I might be dribbling cr@p, but I reckon put a few years and half a dozen kilos of muscle onto Sam and we might have Bluey Mark II. If Sam develops even 3/4 of Bluey's fabled talent and aggression, to add to his blistering speed and ball handling skills, we will have a star on our hands.

Anyway, we can't give Sam Bluey's old number 6, because another ranga, who is also a potential star, already has it!

I think I just worked out why Demonology is such a better forum, with actual knowledgeable Demons fans.

But I'm not there...

So...

Oh, that's even more reason to go to Ology?

Wow, that hurts.

Back on topic: Trengove 31 and Scully 9 for me. Or either or. But I do want to give those numbers to the those two players.

I hope Maric does not get the #5

I want Trengove or Scully to get it :)

I like my #5 jumper and while I like Maric, he is not the sort of player I would like to have his number on my back.

Surely it's not that hard to see when someone says some thing in jest ??????

Having watched both play it seems obvious to me that 31 will go to Scully and Trengove will wear 9

I'd like Spencer to get #1 (Strawbs, Max Walker, Baker, Cordner)

Give #5 to Scully or Trengove, the other can have #31

Keep #9 for a big strong forward

As far as I'm concerned, Blease and Strauss have to earn a lower jumper number. Benny & The Jet have done so, can pick what they want. Maybe #13 for The Jet and #17 for Benny?

Ah yes, I forgot, the most important thing in footy to know is someones number. my bad.

As someone else said, can you see a bit of jest when it pokes you in the eye? Obviously some don't take footy as seriously as you. lighten up.

Ugh.

Hoping for: -

Trengove 31

Scully 9 or 5

11 years and 9 years respectively.

seriously i dont see all the fuss in the numbers, it was the player, not the number they wore that made them great!

You don't have to earn anything. Bennell and Jetta have started their careers with their current numbers. As far as I'm concerned, they should stay in them. All players should stay in the number they debuted in. If the number's too high, or not 'good enough', they shouldn't have been given it in the first place.

i'd like to see:

1. Strauss

5. Maric

9. Trengove

13. Benell

17. Bleese

19. Jetta

24. Jurrah

31. SCULLY!

Sounds spot on with me too.

Dont know why, but I really like Bennell in 13. Reminds me a bit of Yze.

Pretty sure Blease has made some enquiries regarding wearing 17 next year.

Also seem to remember Schwabby mentioning on Twitter that 5 was worn by Bluey Truscott (I think that is right) and that he would like to see a good young player continue the history of it. I instantly decided that he was offering an insight to the thoughts of the footy dept re numbers and as a result I think Trengove will wear 5 next year.

1: Spencer (won't happen but the big unco would look great wearing #1)

5: Trengove

9: Rested/Bennell (don't believe in resting numbers but it may happen..... silly idea)

13: Jetta

17: Blease

24: Jurrah

28: Strauss

31: Scully

Re Scully: I remember watching the MFC Reserves back in the day and observing Rod Keogh tear teams apart and thinking to myself, "I really want this bloke to be smashing it in the senior side." I loved watching a midfielder crash in wearing 31. It meant something to me as a kid.

I hope Scully's career resembles RDB more than Rod's and he makes the number famous again.

I think the story went that both Blease and Strauss were after 17 and couldn't work it out between themselves so went to CC for some mediation of sorts; they were subsequently handed 46 and 47 respectively and told to earn their stripes... Unfortunately both got injured so didn't really get the chance to do that but I would assume both would get a number upgrade for next season.

I always have liked the number 13 for Blease, can see him running around on the wing causing havoc for the opposition much like Ooze did in his early years.

Its been said but nty to Maric number 5, 19 is a nice unique number which he can cast into fame ala number '23'. :P

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
