Hawthorn has a shrinking cap, they call it the "shaun buygoyne syndrome". Hawthorn have to shed salary, this trade is not surprising at all. Move a couple of depth players on to free up some cash and a roster spot for a cheap contracted kid. Good business move form the hawks, better move from the swans who were the short term winners in this deal.

Salary Cap pressure

Yes after 2008 "unexpected" Flag the books at the Hawks would have exploded. They would be treading very carefully this week.

Burgoyne meant a couple had to leave immediately.

F@#$$@#ck McGlynn is quality. Yeah i was thinking this about hawthorn at the start of the year, all these young stars will want more and more, an there is just no room for them in the salary cap. When you think about how many stars they have... and how much their salary will rise considering that they are pretty young

Buddy

Rough-head

Rioli

Lewis

Hodge

Williams

Mitchell

Brown

Sewell

I would consider all these players pretty good... and they will all demand more and more money...

I wonder how many of these players will stay after the next couple of years

"McGlynn, 24, played the last 16 games of Hawthorn's 2009 campaign to take his career tally to 44, but had informed the club he would take his chances in the national draft or pre-season draft if a deal wasn't struck with the Swans."

Hmm bit annoying...

Didn't know that. Unusual. McGlynn is a fair loss for the Hawks in my opinion. Loved the way he played on Didak that night the Hawks pumped the Pies.

My understanding that Hawks wanted to keep both, but they wanted to leave for opportunity, plus cash no doubt. Surely MFC could've offered a better deal for McGlynn?

Hawthorn seriously are making some crazy trades this week..... They are offloading some decent talent....

Exactly!

They are offloading depth! And young talent..

And as we know, and the Hawks know, with so many injuries, depth is so important...

People like Kennedy and McGlynn especially saved them to a degree...

They are going to pay the hawks bigtime...

Sure Burgoyne is a good player but certainly in 2 seasons hasn't played his best football..

Yeah that's a steal IMO. Hawks are obviously right at the limit of their salary cap, especially now getting Burgoyne, so they're having to offload some younger talent to hold the core of their side together.

Swans have done well here.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
