We will win five games

Their is a lot of talk about priority picks.

I believe we will win 5 games because we play West Coast, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Fremantle at the MCG and North at Etihad.

Obviously I will be disappointed if we miss out on pick two but look at it realistically. We have had a reasonable run with injuries in that most of our better players are available. After one and half years under Bailey we should be playing better.

How many games does everyone think we will win?

No way we are good enough to win 5 games.

If it was not for the likes of WC, Freo tanking we would be no chance of winning 5 games. We will only win 5 games if we are out tanked.

I am pretty sure the system will change after this year as this is ridiculous, but in the same breath we must not let ourselves be out tanked.

WC are better at it than Carlton.

Not sure how many we can win, but one thing I do think, which a lot of people on here don't seem to take into consideration, is that Bailey's not into tanking

If we win 5 games then it won't be pick 2 we'll be missing out on, it will be pick 1, because West Coast are a very good chance to finish the year with less than 5 wins.

But we will win 4 games this year only. West Coast at the G, Fremantle at the G and one of Port and North. We'll lose the rest, including Richmond.

Less than 5.

Regardless of who is fit or playing well they can be rested (Bennell), dropped (Robbo, Miller) put aside to allow development of other players (Dunn, Bartram) or omitted for team balance (Martin) and sent off to surgery early to ensure we are just NOT competitive enough.

I'd like to see us win another couple of games before the year is out, but we should do all we can to develop the younger players and secure a priority pick while it still exists.

Not to would just be shooting ourselves in the foot AGAIN.

Go Dees - Building for the future (not tanking just 'working to aquire compensation for an AFL sanctioned football landscape designed to make MFC success, and respect, all but impossible'.

Well... he doesn't admit it publicly...

Have all you guys missed the fact that, despite our competitive form at times this season, we are still sitting on 1 win at the halfway mark..?

All the teams that we "will" beat later in the season are sitting on at least 3 wins.

Perhaps, but he is into developing the list for the future. Now you may say tomato to my tomatoe but there is such a fine line seperating the two and on many occasions the two overlap

The fact is that if we win 5 or more games and miss out on a PP (Scully) while the like of WC (with 14 premiership players playing week in week out) we will be the laughing stock of the media, the entire football community, and AFL supporters (public).

It will not happen.

There are plenty of young players to blood and trial in different positions. There are players that must be played to see if they make the grade or should be delisted (for example Bartram, Dunn).............. and there are those who are sore and have niggling injuries that should and will be sent to surgury so as they are ripe for the start of the pre-season.

Why does everyone think west coast are tanking already? I have watched them play the last 2 weeks (against the cats and tiges) and they haven’t looked that bad. Against the Cats they were really competitive but you could clearly see the cats just out classed them in the last quarter! Against the tiges they did come through with the Adam Goodes.. But they don’t travel the best and a few players like Kerr (who hardly touched the ball near the start) stepped up in the last. It was a scrappy game.. but it was from both sides.. I don’t know.. Maybe its just me.. But I don’t think they are tanking just yet.. they still have winnable games left:

13 v Hawks @ Subi - Very winnable considering Hawks really suck this year and it’s at Subi

14 v Dees @ MCG - The dees should win but west coast still have a very good chance

16 v Port @ AAMI - not the favourites.. but port haven’t played that well the last few games

17 v Freo @ Subi - I am fairly sure west coast will win this

18 v Essendon @ Subi - home ground ad.. very winnable

20 v North @ Subi - should win

22 v Tiges @ Subi - should win

They only need 2 more wins.. and they have still been relatively competitive in matches.. I really don’t see them as a threat! If anything the Dees winning more then 5 is the only threat left for the year!

Exactly why we will win less than 5 games and why we NEED to win less than 5 games:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl...0-19742,00.html

So that we don't end up like North with Laidley -- hanging around the middle with a team that is not good enough to win the chip, but simultaneously preventing ourselves from bringing in good young players by finishing too high.

Case in point: Cyril Rioli.

Its not about the isolated cases though, its the cumulative effect that has North as a club on its knees.

If we win 5 matches Bailey should be sacked.

And if we miss out on Scully I reckon I'll just about be over footy.

I'll move to either Greenland or Iceland and take up .............. whatever it is they do over there...

West Coast were abysmal in the first quarter vs Richmond. Absolutely shocking. Terrible disposal, no second efforts and weak physical presence. They improved as the game went on, but overall they can play as poorly as we do.

Next weekend will be a good gauge of West Coast's mentality. Hawthorn is the most beatable now as they have been over the last 18 months. If West Coast gets a pasting then there's not much of a chance of them getting past the 5 win mark.

are you kidding??

Watching Westcoast against Richmond was the biggest joke ever. I've never in my life seen a team play so bad and put in such a poor effort, West Coast were doing everything in their power to lose!

i can't believe you said West Coast didn't look to bad.. hahahaha

no i said it was a scrappy game and they dont travel well.. you cant honestly say they werent trying against the cats the week before?? they did play like ass against the Tiges.. but some of the players did step up as the game went on.. i still think the next few games for west coast will really show if they are tanking as they have games they can easily win..

..and if you think west coast against richmond was the biggest joke ever.. i think they played better then the dees did v the pies..

I understand your sentiment and absolutely agree about Bailey. I would sack the Footy Department as well. That would be an unmitigated disaster to have 5 wins.

Absolutely.

At the half way mark of the season we have won ONE match.

The time to "list manage" is now, and to say that Bailey is 'not into tanking' is akin to saying that Bailey is not thinking long term, and we absolutely know that he is.

The club can publicly say that we are all about developing a winning culture, just as long as they manage to lose games against West Coast, Richmond, Freo and North.

Anyone who feels the need to take the moral high ground and suggest that tanking is an ugly thing, should just remind themselves how happy they are with Jack Watts, and how much happier they would be if we also had Naitanui. To miss out on Scully and pick 2 could be the difference between making up the numbers and winning a flag.

Tanking = Losing the battle but winning the war!

I watched the West Coast game last week and I saw:

- Tyson Stenglein at full back -- and persisted with, despite getting a genuine spanking by Morton

- Mark LeCras on the ball

- Adam Selwood at full forward

Fair suck of the sav, if that isn't tanking then it's the worst match day coaching you will ever see.

Tanking as such is a pretty easy game, just make sure your match winners are out of the way when the game is up for grabs. It's not about "not trying", it's just making sure your best isn't quite good enough. That means playing players out of position, resting key players at key times, etc. West Coast really have mastered it. We need to be able to do it too. Like others have said, if we win more than 4 this year it'll be a complete waste.

Based on all of that, I predict long periods of bench time for Aaron Davey, particularly through third quarters, for the rest of the year.

Nasher, you should write for the PM's speeches.

Totally agree on the content of your post in relation to West Coast. There is no effort from Kerr or his teammates to free Kerr up at stoppages. Cox wasn't himself against Richmond. When Naitanui looked to be dominating at the centre bounces, Woosha took him off.

Gee playing Selwood up forward was a masterstroke.

who cares about west coast though. sure it would be great to have pick 1 and 2. but i would still be over the fricken moon if we got pick 1 and 3, or 2 and 4. lets not get selfish now. 2 picks in the top 5 would be awesome, scully or no scully

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
