Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Jurrah Nearing debut

I haven't had the opportunity to see Jurah play this year. I have seen clips of him here and there. Can someone (who has seen enough of him) inform me of how good Jurah is at kicking at goal when not straight in line. IE his snapp kick ability either stationary or on the run. From the clips I saw of Jurrah he seemed to prefer to take the extra time to get square (directly face goal) prior to kicking which is great if you have time but time is not abundant at AFL level. Like I say I have only seen clips, not enough to get an idea of how he plays or his kicking ability when not facing goal.

Ive seen him play 4 games and the majority of his goals come from a mark and set shot. Come to think of it I cant remember any coming from general play but I'm sure there has been a few. He seems to be a very smart footballer, always leads to space and his ball use Is first class. He has excellent evasive skills with great vision. Has a knack of getting the ball In traffic and before you know it he's got a few meters of space.

To answer you question I'm not sure what he's like kicking around his body.

First Stefan Martin, now Liam Jurrah - whatever comes through in the end, those two first picks in the pre-season draft have been very well researched in that extra time, and used to bring in unexpected players with really good prospects.

We were hardly going to get a dud with no 1, whoever we'd chosen, but getting good players with good character into the team with very late picks, that's gold.

im not praising his kicking. but itsj ust heaps better than jurrah's. he kicked 113 goals last year, with many of those well outside 50m..including some on the boundary. Sure he kicks heaps of behinds but thats just coz he peppers the goals like no tomorrow. He is still one of the best kicks for goal from long range and off one step in the comp in my opinion.

Jurrah kicking is not great. He can barely kick 50metres..and buddy can do it off one step.

Liam kicked a 60 metre goal yesterday.

I am not sure it is something to worry about.

Peter Daicos when asked this question says he always straightened his shoulders to face the goals, no matter what was coming or what the angle. His highlights prove this, although he is accused of kicking them from "all angles".

Although sometimes it is necessary, it is not encouraged. All coaches encourage you to square your shoulders and run in a straight line towards goal.

Starting to get excited here! Robbo/Watts/LJ - Almost enough to get me to the Dome! Geez I hate that place

So do I, but it's important we have a decent showing at away games too. It's about supporting the team, no matter what. I remember having to go out to Optus Oval, I hated it, but always went. This attitude has to change fellow supporters. Too many fair weathered supporters. Get along whenever it's in Melbourne. It's something like $11 with an MFC membership, if that. So money, surely isn't an issue.

I really hope Jurrah debuts against the Dons too, but I'll be going irrespective of whether he plays.

From what I saw in the game on TV last weekend, his kicking is pretty accurate. He only missed the one set shot from memory, which was about 50 out. The rest he kicked straight through the middle.

Daicos was uncanny at freakish goals from the pockets

He used his opposite foot to kick the ball which is the opposite to what you would use for a set shot

He did kick the ball as close to the goal within the goal square as he could and let the shape of our ball deflect bouce towards the goal

You would get less deflection if you kicked the ball to create a better angle which is why he used his left foot to kick when the goal is on his right side

He did indeed square up the moment he kicked the ball

He did it too many times for it to be a fluke

Most of his shots were with the right foot when under pressure because that was his natural side

Nobody has come close to him yet

I'd not just love to see Jurrah playing for the rest of the season. I'd like to see the future forward line all playing in the same side. Throw in Watts, LJ, Hughes and Maric and see what they can produce. You'd nee dot keep Miller in there to act as general/enforcer, but it would be great to see what the kids could do.

I guess I did waffle a bit but the kicking around the body aspect is what I was talking about as you mention. Good to hear about his ability to create space though and on top of his natural flair if he is a great set shot then there is a lot to like about him.

I guess you have a bit of a point with Daicos but I suppose being a faster modern game it is important to have the ability to kick around the body. I am not saying Jurrah can't as I don't know, it was more an observation that he seemed to prefer the straight line (almost run up) shot at goal in general play which is not necessarily a bad thing anyway if you have the chance. I definitely can't wait to see him play.

Must agree with that. At the moment those two picks could be a huge win for us. With those two picks and Bennell the recruiting dept have done niclely.

I just hope we get the top draft picks right as well. We have had a flaky record in the past.

Agreed, but I think we will do OK. 2 of the 3 were 17 year old schoolboys. We won't know if they are going to be any good for a while yet.

out: bell, mclean, bate, PJ

in: Martin, Bennell, Jurrah, Miller

You can't drop McLean. Whilst his form has been average he doesn't warrant getting dropped. He gives us toughness around the ball and that will be an asset against a much smaller Essendon midfield.

PJ shouldn't go either. His best is very good and his worst is very bad. Agree his skill errors are killing us but he gets the ball more than most ruckman and he will improve. His size will worry Ryder as well.

Three changes: In: Bennell, Jurrah & Miller and Out: Bell, Bate and Maric.

I actually think JMac should be dropped instead of Maric but he is the captain afterall! Perhaps his "knee" may play up again and he can miss out through injury rather than suffer the embarrassment of being dropped.

Maric? I can't find a reason to drop him.

Last 2 weeks he always seems to do the right thing considering the situation, in my eyes.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
