Naughty boys eating junk

Two sections away from my brother and I today, were a number of Melbourne players: Jetta, Garland, Strauss, Grimes, Zomer, Buckley, Wonaeamirri, Newton amongst others.

A number of our players apparently had not eaten yet, and made use of the catering facilities available at the MCG. Hot dogs, pies, chips, soft drink - I saw them, being consumed by our boys who should be making better choices than that. Wonaeamirri had a Coke Zero, Jetta had a Coke Zero and a chocolate bar, Zomer had chips, but worst of all was Simon Buckley. He had a pie and chips, and anyone who has had chips before at the MCG would be aware of the generous serving size.

I wouldn't be so scathing of Simon Buckley had I not seen him last year Queens 's birthday morning on Flinders street with Stefan Martin and others, paper McDonald's bag in hand.

Come on Bucks, two incidents like this, no wonder you're not in the seniors team.

I'm with you on this 100% and am actually really surprised to hear it

There is no need for elite athletes to chug down a high fat diet, the red blood cells stick together from dietary fat/fried foods and can't fit down narrow openings, recovery times are effected and fitness is reduced. It can take 10 hours for the cells to flow freely again not to mention the added body fat and reduced power to weight ratio

In a more general sense, fat and protein are a poor choice of a fuel source too

Other than that, it's his career and if he doesn't respect it then fair enough, go for it

Who the hell cares? Players go out and get smashed every weekend on the [censored]. I don't see any threads on that. A pie and chips for lunch is nowhere near as bad as say 10 beers and some shots. Especially considering they'll have a training session tomorrow, whereas if they were drinking, they wouldn't have training the next day (unless they're Colin Sylvia)

OMG!

The story here is maybe that the food at the 'G is such a poor selection that, irony of ironies, players can't eat it.

We better look into that, before anyone decides to give a toss about the occassional 'soft' meal from a player.

You were kidding, right?

I remember reading an article about Judd soon after he joined Carl$$n.

After a training session he was walking across the street and noticed the young crew Gibbs, Murphy & Co. eating junk food and he totally ripped through them about it.

Explaining that if they wanted to compete at the elite level required to win finals footy they simply can't eat Shite like that, saying that he wouldn't accept it.

Maybe it's the nutrition plan set for them to ensure no more than 4 wins........ :o

No one could ever match Martin Pike's efforts on the Terraces at Princes Park back in the day one day when he was either injured or had played in the 2s. Jacka had a similar appetite.

As for Buckley skinfolds tell all. Certainly does not look like a player carry any excess flab.

Wasn't actually going to respond to this topic, but just have to voice my opinion.....

Get a life! You obviously have to much time on your hands! Do you take a little note book with you to the footy to write down other peoples eating habits?!?!?!

Most people use the footy record to take notes on players goals and behinds...... Not a players pie and chip tally!

No $hit, I have been out late at night in Chapel St and I believe diet is the least of a lot of players concerns!

Get a grip sunshine!

If Buckley and co. are "naughty boys", what do you think of Dale Thomas and the Pies getting stuck into post-game pizzas and hot dogs? In the rooms? Supplied by the club?

Or the gaggle of Swans players necking 600ml bottles of Coke after a hard-fought win against the Tigers yesterday?

These are athletes. Nutritionally, this food mightn't be the best but it's all energy and they'll more than burn it off with training and games.

I'm not going to begrudge our players a pie and chips at the footy. For all we know, it might be Buckley's one dietary indulgence of the week.

Well said.

Next story will be "Player A picks a winner" with a photo of a player picking his nose. With quotes from health experts and comments from Adrian Anderson wanting to impose a $5,000 fine. What rubbish.

I think that article was less about the nutritional advice and more about the influence Judd had over the young developing Carlton players.

I remember it vividly and I was given the impression the players saw what Judd had selected and put back the junk, choosing to mimic him.

Monkey see, monkey do. That was the point.

Michael Phelps' diet includes a mass intake of junk food. And geez he's a fat unfit bastard.

I suppose you want the club to have the players giving poo samples, so they can be tested on what they ate the night before a game.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
