Half time and we've managed to concede the lead after looking the better side for most of the first half. We played well but paid heavily for a few unforced errors. We're getting monstered in the ruck and need a focal point at FF. And Nathan Jones should have slotted that last shot.

All in all, a fair improvement on how we played for much of 2008 but we need someone to take control after half time.

Brock? Col?

You and I seem to be the only two who pass their time during the breaks on their iPhone

Very impressed with the first quarter, but as you said we've lost the plot a bit in the last 15 minutes. Turnovers are going to be the hot topic again.

Brock has been quiet and Bruce's disposal particularly bad. Morton and Martin however have been fantastic.

We are still very much in this.

No coverage of the game here in SA- Sounds like another disappointing fade out! Better players? Any injuries??

hate me if you will, but two weeks running brock mclean has no vision for team mates. are our players taught to handball into traffic? sure, we are a young side, we should learn from this, but ive seen it time and time again. too many skill errors and bad decisions by experienced players. two weeks running we have had the game in the balance at half time and thrown it away. some big pre season hey. ok we could have had an easier draw, two top 4 sides in two weeks, some signs for the future, but its a long way off. umpiring is terrible, for both sides, its just not consistent. now i know why i enjoy watching nrl over afl, they have to stop changing the rules so much. no rushed behind rule is making too many players panic, especially when you are blooding youngsters. i dont know why i renew my membership every year, but if i see a continuation of ordinary performances i might just give up, its too humiliating to even care anymore, for the future i wish them luck, but im not counting on it.

Why? We were in front, sure, but we made 2 tackles! Circle work really, touch footy. No pressure. A bit of pressure comes, and well you know the rest.

Gunna be a long year.

sick of the excuse that we are young!

As a coach be creative! First time in two years i have been dissapointed with bails! Exploit their potential weakness!!!!!!!!! In the ruck.. Fraser by him self and we had two ruckman and got dominated! Run to the forward line, take him out of the game for hell sake!

Midfield effort pathetic. Second half pathetic!

This sucks.

Footy sucks.

Dissapointing fade out. We were thoroughly outclassed, and I can see no excuse for this other than the better team won.

We had a nice setup in the first quater, using run and flow to break Collingwood before finding the likes of Miller, Petterd and Green up forward. Collingwood slowly found control, and just when we needed someone to hold things up and show some composure - no one stood up.

Pass marks to Jones, Moloney, Frawley, Morton, Davey & Rivers who I think were fantastic.

Is that you Malcolm Blight?

Bennell did some good things but Jetta needs time in the VFL to develop. If Maric plays a full game his week he should definitely replace Jetta next round.

We need to look at the two halves in isolation. First half is where we're heading, second half is what happens when a bottom of the ladder team takes on a top 4 team. As infuriating as it is we are not going to get better over night. At least we can walk away from the game knowing that Morton is going to be a gun, Warnock is a defensive rock and Ricky has a bright future as a forward. I rather lose with a young team than an old one.

Bruce has disappointed and shone. The veritable enigma, but who else (other than Morton, say) persisted so?

Our linking today under pressure or not showed marked improvement.

Many good things seen. Lessons to be learned.

haha well its true isnt it!

The senior blokes we have are not match winners, its just frustrating thats all.

Im very dissapointed to fold like we did after that first quarter.

Its going to be a long long long season i think

A few things off my chest.

#1 - Get Mahoney out of our coaching box. He is useless. Rarely has forwards inside the 50, when we get the ball we have to wait an eternity for players to get down there and by that time we have turned the ball over. When we have a target up there, there is not one crumber for when the ball spills out. I was taught these tactics in primary school.

#2 - Stuff Bailey's gameplan. We obviously don't have the skill to execute it for a whole 4 quarters. When a team is as poorly skilled as ours, we need to stick to the basics. Accountable football, first option best option and kick the bloody thing long into the forward line (doesn't matter if there's no one there, hopefully Mahoney will get a clue and put people in the 50)

#3 - this may seem controversial to many, but i seriously question Bruce's spot in the side. Sure he gets a lot of the ball, but almost half would be turnovers and a 1/4 would be ineffective. Just stating it as it is, and if you don't agree you are obviously blind and biased. McDonald is awfully close to getting to this level. Sure he might try, but the game passed him by 2 years ago.

#4 - PJ needs a rocket sent up his arse. Lazy lazy lazy. Bring Meesen in for him, we're gonna lose anyway so some competition for him can only be good.

#5 - we are not going to be any good any time soon. Play the kids and only the kids. What a statement it would make if the captain was dropped from the team. McDonald, the captain, needs to set an example, too often today the team stopped chasing, him included. On-field leadership is way more valuable than off-field. Sadly McDonald is just not up to AFL standard any more. I could say this for almost all players, but the majority are young and need to be tried.

#6 - Sylvia had little effect, strike that no effect. However, he did not turn the ball over anywhere near as much as Buckley last week.

#7 - Davey is not a midfielder, keep him on a HFF, it is where he played his best footy. I'd prefer to see him get 13 good touches than 20+ easy kicks in the backline.

#8 - If we keep this up, showing no progress, Bailey is on borrowed time. And good riddance. If it ain't working then the coach is not getting through to the players.

We were competitive for 3 quarters last week, 2 this week, and i predict we will be good for maybe 1 (hopefully at least a half of a quarter at port). We sure are making progress!!!

Frustrated?????? i definitely am, but what we put out today was pathetic. a half of footy is not good enough, regardless of if we are young

Jaded form where i sat Morton got cheap possesions then murdered the ball sorry but seem opposition teams are letting him do this however was nowhere near the worst in turn overs mclean must have turned nearly every time today

Nope. Totally off the mark - Davey was fantastic in the middle. Good user of the ball and gave us a little bit of spark.

I understand your frustation Mousey. Certain senior members of the team seem to be responsible for a lot of the turnovers, which is extremely frustating, I can forgive Cheney for fluffing a kick in, but it does get annoying watching Bruce continually turn the ball over by hand or foot.

And by the way, I will never listen to Malcolm Blight's whingeing commentary, it was doing my head in today more than anyhting that was happening on field. Next game on channel 10, I will mute it, and watch in silence or give a bit of running commentary myself

It's clear that Bailey is playing kids that are not ready for AFL standard.

Jetta 6 touches

Bennell 8 touches

Do we have any depth at Casey?

Maric

Dunn

Meeson

Newton

Valenti

im a big fan of giving kids block of 3-5 games with the knowledge that they wont be dropped if they make a mistake ,allowing them to back themselves, having said that Maric must come in next week

Disgree. Morton runs hard for 4 quarters, he gets into the right position so that he is available, and he makes the right decisions. His kicking is sometimes horrendous, but he was one of our best today.

On the topic of McLean, I heard on the radio after the game that he had 10 kicks, of which 8 went to the opposition. Garry Lyon said he's never seen McLean play as badly as he did today, and I agree with him.

I never said he was bad, i said he got a lot of the easy ball in the backline. Sure he was the link up, but he ran behind to get the ball. He was the loose man, anyone can do that if no one is matching up on you.

Whilst our forward line was non-existent after half time. He is needed more in the forward line IMO.

Morton had 2 shockers from memory, but overall he gave us some brilliant run out of the backline. He is so smart, has great penetration in his kick, and played his role perfectly. He is also becoming more confident in his body, so he goes in harder at the contest now, which is great. Still needs a good feed, and IMO should end up as a key forward, but we have a really good player on our hands. Some of his evasive moves, given he is 191cm (192?) are amazing.

I don't know what's going on with McLean. I doubt anyone is more in love with that man than myself, but he's had two shockers and today was the worst game I have seen him play. Either he is terribly unfit, having had a late start to the pre-season, or he is getting tagged out of the game. I'd give him a couple of weeks to play off the half back line or even as a small forward, and get some touch into him. Seems very frustrated as well, which can't be helping.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
