Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

DUAL MAJOR SPONSORS ON THE WAY

That is disappointing if true.

Perhaps, but I think that it is more important to build a long term relationship with your sponsor rather than look at the short term . At the moment Melbourne is comparatively less marketable than some of the other clubs in terms of on field success, supporter base membership demographics etc. With the things the present Committee have in mind this will eventually change and the brand will inevitably become more expensive. However in view of the current economic climate I would be looking at a sponsor who will be around for a while- for example Insolvency accountants .

Bendigo Bank for mine.

Anyone see my ears [censored] up then?

Got anything more for us Golly, or just the gut feeling?

In fact even PM me, if there's more to it. I have my own reasons to be stoked if there's substance behind this speculation. ;)

This situation would be ok at present, build slowly & don't forget the MCC situation which is going to be very usefull in years to come if it all comes through. It's more important this year to give value for money for any sponsors we have. I do like the idea of multiple sponsors, particularly as the markets are dodgy for the next few years.

What makes sponsorship attractive for a commercial entity, is the fact that they align their brand EXCLUSIVELY with a team.

If there were a number of principle or major sponsors, the deal certainly doesn't look as attractive from a commercial point of view, and the level of financial input from the sponsors would be significantly lower.

Unless the two sponsors really do complement eachother - pies and sauce... VISY and the new season of Underbelly... TabCorp and the Family Crisis Counselling Centre... that sort of thing...

I'm so bitter

How about Virgin and Club-X? :D

But seriously, I'm hoping Virgin, Telstra, Holden, ANZ or Crown Casino.

I am seriously hoping that we can nail a deal with Virgin or V Australia..whatever Branson's new project is called...I love the Virgin brand and Branson is a man who is innovative and would seemingly love to help a down and out footy club...truth of the matter is that its pretty unlikely this will happen..but lets hope..the guy is known for whackier things and loves a publicity stunt

E ven if Virgin arn't the new sponsors i seriously hope that Jimmy and the board at least approached the guy while he was here promoting himself and his empire!!

My information directly from an MFC director is that the final details involving dual sponsors are still being worked through but the money involved is significantly less than we'd have received from Mission Foods.

Either the MFC director has unnecessarily loose lips or he may not be happy to know you have used this forum to spread the news.

Utlimately I am not surprised with the outcome.

But seriously, I'm hoping Virgin, Telstra, Holden, ANZ or Crown Casino.

Virgin ---maybe. The others for various reasons ...forget it.

I like the idea of Hisense - in the same sort of situation as LG were 10 or so years ago when we got them on board. Also something similar to Hawthorn in the likes of the Tasmanian Government. Maybe the Northern Territory Government to promote travel to the top end, considering the amount of players we now have on our list from that part of the world?!

Who knows? I'd take anyone at this stage!

It would be nice if one of the companies that come on board are directed at the younger generation. It could help to promote us to the kids which is something we desperately need. Someone like a Nintendo etc

At the end of the day though i'll happily take anyone who plans to invest in the future of the club.

It is really good news what ever the sponsor. I've said it before, but there is a nice feel around teh club at the moment, and with Garry, Robbie and Braass on board as patrons it is even better.

About sponsors, there was a quick mention of GLOBE sponsoring the Youth Forum, they are a footwear and streetwear (skaters, boarders etc) company based out of Abbotsford, I actually have a pair of their shoes myself, strange they sponsored the forum and they don't get a namecheck anywhere on the MFC site, not that I could see anyway, perhaps with Melbourne aiming at a more youthful fanbase this could be one of the companys coming on board, 'all the players wearing a pair etc'

I'm afraid that any sponsorship with Globe may effect our merchanise sponsor Reebok.

I couldn't see Reebok being happy about it.

The head (I think) of Globe is a mad keen Melbourne supporter and was just helping out with the Youth Summit. Globe is a skate shoe brand and probably wouldn't look to advertise in the AFL envirnoment, but I may be wrong.

Do any of the major Grocery chains sponsor AFL clubs? I can't think of any and wonder why not?

Alienate potential customers which they do not want to do. They market on a more broad based arrangement through other mediums.

Also retail is struggling big time with a huge squeeze on margins. Can t see them sponsor a 3rd tier AFL club which has a low supporter base.

Damn, forgot all about Reebok, couldn't see them being happy as said, I am fond of growing old disgracefully and actually was looking forward to buying some MFC/Globe gear, ah well back to the drawing board.

I think when the sponsor(s) come onboard, knowing Jim Stynes, one or both of them will be completely 'lleft field' that nono of us would have even contemplated.

TAC & Dan Murphy's....The True Juxtaposition!!

Perhaps we don't want Dan Murphy's?

Its always been a joke around our company that Dan Murphy's sponsored Collingwood for 1 season in 1999 and 3 or 4 years recently, and until that final season of the Carlton Sponsorship where they finished 14th I think, they were 4 wooden spoons from 4 attempts.

Funny whilst we were sponsoring the filth and visy... not so funny sponsoring us

I've done a bit of work with Globe through my uni course, and there is no way that they could afford to become a major sponsor of an AFL club. They are not large enough, nor will it be a wise financial investment for them.

I think that Woolworths / Safeway would be an ideal brand to have on board - especially since they are expanding and hiring new staff in a very tough economic climate.

C'mon Woollies

Cheers

The supermarket division won't sponsor for the exact reasons that Rhino has mentioned.

Dick Smiths sponsors Richmond

Dan Murphy's pulled out of its sponsorship deal with Carlton because they no longer saw value for money

Big W may fall into the same boat as the supermarkets, not wanting to alienate anyone.

Coles Myer on the other hand has a couple of great alternatives.

First Choice, their answer to Dan Murphy's, practically identical in concept has no profile and little patronage, despite the business model being very sound. AFL sponsorship for them I feel would be the best $1,000,000 they could spend.

Different demographic.

All people need go to shopping centres and like it or not they perform a quasi community function and therefore there is no need to alienate potential customers by taking up regoinal allegiances that do little to promote the Brand. They will usually stay neutral and look at more general forms of promotion.

Its not the case with KFCs and car brands who interact with customers on a different basis and on different terms.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 09 vs Carlton

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. The Dees take on the Blues and have the opportunity to win their third game on the trot to solidify a spot in the Top 4 in addition to handing the Blues their third consecutive defeat to bundle them out of the Top 8.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
