Asked on SEN today who was the most talented footballer he played with during his career, David Schwarz replied that it was Allen Jakovich. Unfortunately, he never got the most out of himself because of his casual attitude towards training. Rarely seen during pre season except when it came to the annual country v city cricket game and then he would do everything - bat, bowl, field and keep wickets. Kicked eight goals in his last game v Hawthorn and then his career was done in by a bad back although he spent a brief time after that at Footscray.

Talented player Yes

Team player No

Off the top of my head similar players with those traits

Phil Carmen

John Pitura

Sam Keckovich

Except for Keckovich who was chosen as an interchange none of that lot made their TEAM of the century

I remember him fondly. He made his mark with MFC just after Darren Cuthbertson proved himself to be flash in the pan. Jacko was a charasmatic chraracter - and a talented one at that. The image of him kissing his brother after kicking a goal and high fiving fans - one of the best moments in football. Characters like that would not make it in today's sterile world of professional sportsman.

Much like James Hird hugging the fan after his goal against West Coast. Or Micky O'Loughlin for Sydney giving it to those West Coast fans. The characters are still there....its not that sterile today...

Exactly. There are a few more too you could add too.

Its a fair call by the Ox. If he had more settled disposition between the ears Jeff Farmer could really have been elite. He blew it and finish as nasty filthy selfish player who had little of the respect that built up in his early years.

Other sports that became sterile, > ...Golf .... Basketball ...

John Daly? I would agree basketball in this country is devoid of any personalities but if you want worldwide sterilisation of a sport look at tennis. Except for the few in the womens game who have looks the sport is full of robots. Djokovic is a character and the Willaims sisters bring something different but on court = game face robots.

As for Jakka, he is the man who rekindled my interest in foootball

I was at his last game against the Hawks at Princess Park. I recall he kicked 8.8 and sadly it was his last as a Dee. Sensational too watch. Recall him destroying many teams over his career.

Schwarz would have to be the most talented I have seen in my time.

But he was'nt going to name himself!

Federer, Nadal, Davydenko are all quiet people. The sport has quietened down now there's no Americans at the top, surprise surprise, but the top guys are all private.

Yes. Lyon has said a few times, the most talented player in his time - apart from Flower - at the club was the Ox.

I remember that game against Hawthorn at Princess Park. I was sitting behind the goals where the Melbourne cheersquad was, right up the back of the stand. Jako absolutely killed it that day and didn't even play a full game. He could have been the greatest full-forward ever. Better than Lockett. Better than Ablett. Anyone. But he was fat, lazy and not dedicated enough. He didn't train and ultimately, his lack of conditioning led to back problems.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
