  1. Such mixed feelings watching those highlights. He easily could have been our best ever. I forgot how good he was through traffic too. I had the privilege of being part of some workshops focussed on water and first nations people last year. I met Liam's Aunty and Uncle. The Walpiri elders have a sacred waterhole in the desert. When the conditions are right (they can tell from how the hawks and eagles are gliding), they burn the bush which creates the clouds to bring the rain. Pretty amazing. Anyways, they said that Liam was going really well these days and back playing his footy and loving it. So good to hear. Does anyone up that way get to still see him play?

  4. I was all ears for what Cale had to say. Until the quiz at the end, and then started questioning whether he would have bright enough to play football.

  5. Watching that Id forgotten what a powerful and accurate kick he was...this on top of all his other extraordinary attributes. I agree with previous posters. After Robbie he's the best Ive seen play for the dees. Could do it all.

  7. It may be becoming more and more likely that Bennell is going to light up the 'G ... and put paid to some of his supporter critics. The young man needs a break; we should be offering nothing but absolute encouragement to him with open arms.

  8. No. 40 2017 Round 8 v Crows at Adelaide Oval I went across to see this game with a degree of hope but could not have expected the result. We’d just lost to the Hawks by 3 points to go 3-4 and so desperately wanted to make finals. Goodwin was coaching against his former team for the first time. Unfortunately a burst from the Crows put them up by about 5 goals about 15 minutes into the 2nd quarter. We looked benign. Suddenly a few goals awoke the contest and we went in 10 points down at the half. In the third quarter the Dees run exposed the Crows and we went on to win by 41 points. Bernie Vince celebrated his 200th game in another win over his former side. Jack Viney and Clayton Oliver were sensational. Mr.SpareParts Cameron Pedersen kicked 3 goals including the sealer in the last. Jonesy also kicked a beauty and celebrated. Amazing victory and it’s nice to get out of Adelaide alive. Admittedly most of the Crows fans left about halfway through the last. I picked up some nice bottles of red from Mclarenvale (D’arenberg) and returned to Vic with a smile. Melbourne 17.5.117 defeated Adelaide 9.12.66

  11. If you consider that Schwarz, Jakovich and Jurrah had their careers ruined by injury or fate, you'd be inclined to wonder how great they might have been. They were all sublime in their own ways.

  12. Highlight reel makes you remember how good he was, two good knees and he’s a superstar! What a pity!

  13. Agreed. Cale mentioned a number of interesting points about facilities (e.g. junction oval), player development, support staff, complacency and others, which gives a fairly honest overview of us at the time.

  14. In hindsight Neeld was a terrible coach, and Morton’s development was probably ruined like many others from that period. Shame we wasted all those high draft picks. Hopefully we’ve got it right this time. Still not convinced after another 17th places finish...

  15. Jakovich was awesome even before coming to Melbourne. I was living in SA the year before he was drafted to the Dees. There were 2 gun full forwards in the SANfl. Scott Hodges was playing for Port Adelaide, who were premiers that year, kicked 100+ goals. He had the benefit of a dominant midfield. Jako played for Woodville who finished bottom. He also kicked 100+ goals in what was basically a team making up the numbers. It was an amazing effort. I was elated when he was drafted to the Demons. I travelled over to Melbourne for this game against North, and saw one of the most incredible displays of forward play. 20 scoring shots - what a star!

  16. Truly amazing wasn't it? It was always a possibility when going to watch him play...you didn't know if he would kick 10 goals 1 or 1 goal 10. Either way it was his ability to make something out of nothing. As Drew Morphett said at one point 20 possessions as a full forward doesn't happen.

  17. I was just starting to barrack for the Dees at this time, and on that weekend my father - an Englishman who hated aussie rules but loved soccer - took me to Olympic Park to watch Everton defeat Australia 8-2.. If only the day before I could have gone to the G and seen the amazing demons play. It was mid-season a year later that Saint recruits Cooper and Ditterich tore us apart, ending our reign.

  18. So you're saying he should say no to a club podcast? Or go on a club podcast and not give an answer about when asked what training is like? Jesus some people are hard to please.

  19. May has been telling us how ready he is since he joined the club. May needs to shut up and prove it on the field. I am not sure why he gets asked anything. Just because we paid too much for him does not make his opinion worth more than any player. When footy gets back to a full season and we make the finals, I doubt May will be in the team. He was too old and over rated when we got him and he is yet to prove he has been worth the trouble and expense.

  24. Even after his 3 Reco's, he still turned his career around and became an excellent power forward. Being more an athletic tall half-forward, earlier. He became the true power-forward/ruck. Very effective and a handful for opposition's.

  25. Alongside Robbie - for sheer talent (when not hobbled by injury upon injury) - I hold David Schwartz in absolute awe. He is up there with the greatest 5 players the MFC ever had since WWII.

  26. No.41 Round 22 v Carlton at MCG The home and away season in ‘88 had two memorable victories. We defeated the Hawks to avenge the 87 prelim and we were full of excitement for the elusive premiership glory. The team recorded a 5 straight winning sequence to start the year and were 12-4 by round 16 and holding the double chance behind the Hawks on top. Then we lost to the Hawks (smashed) and then the next 4 games. The 5 straight losses left us 12-9 with the Blues in 2nd place in round 22. The Bombers were keen to take our spot in the finals. At least our destiny was in our own hands, “ if we win, we are in ! “ The big game at the MCG suddenly saw the Dees awake with a big first quarter. We were on fire. I remember a very anxious crowd suddenly remembering that we were a good team. Northey had a way of lifting his players above themselves. Whilst we didn’t have a key full forward which was the real gap in the team, Lyon, Spalding, Wight & Williams stood up through the year to kick vital goals supported by Wilson and Jackson as small forwards. An 8 goal first quarter burst had us up by 5 goals. Lyon was the key. The lead extended to 7 goals by 3/4 time and could and should have been more. Stynes and O’Dwyer were in charge in the ruck. The Blues were being held but then kicked 5 goals to start the final quarter to get within 2 goals. Three goals to the Dees answered the challenge in the last 10 minutes gave us a 30-point victory. I remember the excitement of young Andy Lovell when he kicked the final goal. We had defeated the Blues (reigning premiers) twice in the year and deserved our spot. It was excitement and relief as we qualified for the finals to back up 87. We did it tough and Demon supporters needed heart medication once again. Ultimately the 88 finals were memorable (both good and bad!) Melbourne 14.12.96 defeated Carlton 10.6.66

  29. No. 42. 2015 Round 12 v Geelong at Kardinia Park The Dees hadn’t won at Kardinia Park for 10 years. The Cats were arrogant and had considered the Dees easybeats. But not on this day. The Dees were ready to go from the start and the Cats had a fight ahead this time. The Dees kicked 5 goals to lead by 11 points at qtr time and then held on to be 5 points ahead at 1/2 time. The third quarter was an arm wrestle as the cats tried to get ahead. A great goal to Jeremy Howe from a mark and kick from the boundary about 40 metres out was a beauty and setup a 2 goal 3/4 qtr time advantage. The Dees kicked 5 goals in the last to the Cats two goals to seal the upset victory. Nathan Jones was outstanding as a leader. Gawn controlled the ruck and was showing his potential. Brayshaw showed why he was a top draft pick. Recycled group of Vince, Lamumba, Cross and Garlett (4 goals) were fantastic. A young Neal-Bullen kicked 3 goals in his third game as a half forward. A rare win at the Cattery was celebrated with hope for the rest of 2015. Melbourne 18.5.117 defeated Geelong 13.11.89
