  6. Do you regular Casey goers ever make an effort to meet up and say g'day? bjDee, KC, Angry, DemonDave, hells bells etc. Or do you ever see other fellas eyeball deep in smart phones, wondering if they're the other Demonlanders?

  8. Actually, what was said was not that GWS is over the salary cap at the moment but rather, that it will need to make room for $600k of salary cap space to cater for increased payments negotiated for next year. That's before the next collective bargaining agreement which is certain to give clubs more room in their total player payments so the story sounds like a storm in a teacup to me.

  12. The purpose of this trade was to bring in a midfielder further in to his development. Just like the deal that saw us giving away this year's first round pick for Oliver (or was it Weideman?), the purpose was to fast track our midfield development. I don't think Tyson has to be as good as the player taken at two (Kelly) or any of the other players we took between there and Salem at 9 for it to have been a success. Tyson immediately made our midfield better, which was the goal; we didn't have to wait years for the trade to bear fruit. Certainly it would have been possible to draft a player who immediately made us better (Bont), but history shows you have to be very lucky to get that kind of result. It's trading an unknown for a solid known: forget Kelly or Bont; we could just have easily have drafted Scharenberg. Imagine the sliding doors topic then. I wholly disagree with rjay's assertion that Salem is not a pick 20 worthy player. History shows that as many players in the 10-20 range completely flop as they do forge a career, and you get very few gun players in that range. Salem has the tools to become a decent player, and I'm pretty confident he will. That would be a better than average result for a pick 20, which was essentially the price.

  15. Salem to date has been disappointing? His equivalents at stronger clubs would not have had to play him so much in his early couple of years. The beginning to his career has been solid and the fact that he has been dropped has less to do with his drop in form and more to do with the team's increase in form, and talent, and standards, and expectations. Salem, has had a disappointing 2 months, that's it.

  17. It was a heart stopper and a real grind. But tonight was a great win for Casey against last years runners up when at different times it looked like Box Hill may run away with it. Here's how the players went from my view point; Christian Salem: Thought he was good without being great. Played as a genuine mid, so was good to see him get that opportunity and he got a fair bit of the ball, although wasn't as clean i would have expected. One really good thing to see though was at the start of the last term when it was a 1 point ball game and in the balance, Salem got the first two clearances of the quarter. Sign of a player who stands up when needed. Chris Dawes: Kicked 3 and thought he was good. Would have loved to see him take a few more contested grabs, though it wasn't really the night for that. Did a lot of tough bullocking work, chasing and tackling and set a few other goals up. Pedersen picked a bad week to miss ill as i think we may see Dawes back next week. Jack Trengove: Another solid game for Trenners. The vast majority of his work was done in close where his hands were very good. I'd expect he'll be putting his hand up to play sooner or later. Sam Frost: I'm just going to say it. He's a defender, and quite a good one at that. P,ayed well tonight i thought. Spoilt really well and on a couple of occasions used his speed to burn off his opponent and set up some rebound from our back line. Would have to be an outside chance to come in next week for a good match up on Westhoff. Sam Weideman: Like Paul Keating's 'The recession we had to have' this was the game The Weed had to have given how well he's started his debut VFL year. Not the night for tall forwards and he really struggled to get into the game. Kept trying but just didn't happen. Nearly took a nice mark in front of goals late in the match to seal the game, however double grabbed at it and was spoilt. Reckon he'll learn a lot from tonight. Liam Hulett: Like Weideman, struggled to have a huge influence, but didn't find the going as tough as The Weed. Competed well and was tough at the contest. Was reported in the 2nd term for what was nothing more then a shove and had his free kick for holding the ball reversed (it will get thrown out). Kicked a beautiful snap in the 2nd term, yet missed a sitter in the 3rd, so should of had 2. Jack Grimes: Thought it was an odd game. Didn't even spot him for a good 20min into the game and barely noticed him. He then seemed to be in everything in the 2nd quarter and i thought was the driving force behind their great play. It was arguably the best quarter i've seen him play. He created a lot of run and used the ball well. He was then solid in the 2nd half i thought so a valuable contributor. Jake Spencer: I thought he rucked really well while getting no help from tbe umpires for several ruck infringements that were never called. He did a bit around the ground also which was nice to see. His solid form is pleasing given our lack of ruck depth. Aaron Vandenberg: Was obviously on reduced minutes given it was his first game back. Noticed him involved in a few physical scuffles which we always love to see him in, however i didn't reallly notice him have that big an impact on the game. Will need a few more weeks. Mitch White: Another good game for Mitch at this level. What stood out for me with White was how clean he seemed to be with possession and his use of the ball off his right foot as well as his left. Did notice on at least 2 occasions he misjudged the flight of the ball in marking contests which could be a concern. Otherwise i thought he was very good. Joel Smith: For me it was the best game i've seen Joel play. What really stood out was his athleticism and ability to run and jump. Like White i though he was very clean with his possession and he helped create a few goals. We may have found something here. Tall rangy wingman maybe??? Dean Terlich: Credit where it's due, i thought tonight was one of his better games. Defended well, ran well and even used it reasonably well. I only remember one howler which was dropping a mark he should of taken. Don't think it matters however, as pretty sure his papers are stamped. Max King: Played alright i thought Max. Certainly the best game i've seen him play from a rucking perspective, although like Weideman and Hulett he struggled to have an impact when forward. Kicked a shocker after the siren at 1/4 time that i expected him to nail. No Dunn or Newton tonight, which suggests Melbourne will likely have a late change tomorrow. A great win by the Scorps tonight though as they now go a game clear on top of the ladder with several players putting their hand up for senior selection. Scorps probably could have won by more has they not been as wasteful going forward as compared to Box Hill, but any win over the Hawks is a good one. Any questions, fire away. Edit: Not last years premiers

  31. Yes, we must accept them. It's old ground, but they and the Suns are where they precisely because they are not in footy heartland. That's why a team in Tassie will never get up. Unless it's a transplant which is also unlikely. Tassie is heartland and does not need to be conquered. The AFL are not squirting money up against a wall because they enjoy doing it. In a rare visionary moment, they looked ahead 50 years to forecast the sporting landscape in Australia. Some scenarios emerged. Aussie Rules still the biggest baddest most watched and (one of the) most participated in sports. Possibly expanding into other countries in a serious (non-boutique) way. Aussie Rules overtaken by soccer, or (less likely but still conceivable) rugby league. AFL where soccer is now: modest crowds, limited TV exposure, battling for sponsors in a crowded market. Aussie Rules a niche sport, swamped by soccer, RL, basketball and gridiron. Aussie Rules a quaint relic of the nation's barely remembered past. Like squash, billiards, pony racing, tug of war, or croquet. Aussie Rules and all other outdoor games barely played at all in favour of computer games. (Not so likely, but again, due to lack of space for one thing, feasible.) Which is it to be? The AFL have seized the moment with their bags of TV cash to make a pre-emptive strike at scenario #1. This is like nation building infrastructure. They have the money and the will to do it. And now is the time. Not to do it, to sit on their laurels, would be to concede the initiative and risk one of the less preferable scenarios to come into being. In the battle for the survival of this game, they have to go forward, or go backward. Life has a way of showing us that things don't stay the same. Which is it to be? We may quibble with many things about the formation of GWS and GC, and of course we do, but the whole point of their existence is something we should all be behind. We must accept them.

  35. Our centre clearance team has at times has been Salem, VDB, Trenners and ruck Spence or King. They won the clearances convincingly that qtr. I thought Scorps would struggle this week with the loss of both ANB and Newton, but the ins of VDB and Salo seem to have more than made up for it so far. One of ANBs strengths this year has been his 4 qtr endurance. Guess we are yet to see if the replacements are up to his standard on that score. Grimes had also been in a lot of the clearance work, incl at throw ins. He continues to have really good form when on the ball. Doesn't excite with cleanness or polish, but there is not question he is often effective. His experience really seems to be showing through, and he looks to be really determined. He is definitely not cruising.

  41. Goddard: out of ten his face has a punchability of 9. Already mentioned is Daniher, I think he's just too ugly to punch. If I got close enough to punch him I think I'd just end up staring at him, getting caught in his ugliness.

  43. I see a lot of Patty Cripps in Oliver, just how clean he is in close and how he always seems to get a handball out, but i think he'll end up being a Chris Judd- type player, he has that break away pace. Weitering is really interesting, he's a gun and all class but i can't see him being a genuine key back in the way Alex Rance is, more the third tall who sets up a lot of the play, he's going to be a 250 game future captain of the club though. I personally think we got the better player of the two, and my massive call is, Weiderman will be a better player than both in my very honest opinion, he is a great talent.
