  1. For any poster who wants Blease in, read Brad Miller's assessment from last week, yes he is an excitement machine, but until he runs both ways, we won't see him

  2. So two points that made his top 10 likes 3. Book ends Chris Dawes and James Frawley up one end and Tom McDonald up the other. Dawes was a focal point and pushed himself upfield to be the target, and his goal from 55m in the third quarter was a game breaker. Frawley was the fierce competitor and together with Dawes they supplied four goals, while Frawely took 14 marks. McDonald probably played his best game for the club. Cant remember him being beaten in a one-on-one and his rebound was terrific. And I like his nickname: T-Mac. 4. Melbourne As a whole. Watched from the bottom deck in the members and the joy on the faces of Melbourne fans in the final quarter was immense. There was so much to like. This wasnt won in five minutes, it was won because Melbourne controlled the contest for the 60 minutes after half-time. It was sustained pressure and run which won them the game, something we havent seen at the Demons for some time. Have to confess that I havent rated Nathan Jones as high as others, believing he was largely an and in-and-under player. Hes more than that and I was wrong. The last bit made me smile and Kudos for finally realising how good Jones is!

  3. i was in the MCC bottom level and my favourite moment (besides the game) was in 5 minutes to go in the last, when seas of Carlton supporters in GA started leaving, and most of the MCC stood up and started waving them goodbye, combined with ya' stereotypical "na na na na- goodbye" song. And how did the Carlton supporters react? Calling us over to try and fight them, which we obviously ignored. But was amazing to be able to "stick it up" a club, and their smug fans for a change. I am bloody addicted to winning now, and i hope the players are too.

  4. Dawes called Misson and Roos, stated his case, wanted to play as he knew the team really needed a forward. Pleased that we could give up 3 goals and then catch them and pass it when in years gone by it would have been the end of us. Says Roos ability to know when to give a hard direct speech and when to back it off a bit without giving in on the non negotiables. Eddie said the club handled the Clark situation extremely well. Dawes relieved, borderline happy that Clark retired as he believes it would have killed him. Said the confidence is up, Suns are ripe for the picking, and it is great the players have to prove themselves in the VFL prior to getting back into the seniors.

  10. I agree regarding "getting ahead of ourselves". But the joke is about Carlton, not us, and if we were only to beat one team this year I'd have chosen Carlton.

  11. I suppose so, when you look at it that way. I hate the whole idea of Sheahan's list. How can he produce a pre-season list of the top 50 players in the competition that is radically different to the postseason list that he publishes just a few months prior (with 0 games being played in between)? The list holds no merit to me.

  12. Jones MUST feature in Sheahens top 50 this year.

  13. When he says he is a role player, he isn't talking himself down - he is just pointing out that he has a very defined role (like we saw on the weekend) and that unless you are an expansive player capable of some special things you should stick to the basic tasks that define your role. For him it is spaces to lead into, avoid, where to create space for others, where to direct te ball at contests et al. Simple stuff that I haven't seen a great deal of over the years at Melbourne - everyone has seemed to 'wing it' when they get the footy. And they haven't been good enough to do that well.

  14. I heard Jack Dyer once say "he kicked it laterally across the ground at right angles". You too can commentate like Bruce McAveney: make "question-statements", like "He's a good player isn't he?" or "That was a great kick, wasn't it?", or "He's going to be something, isn't he?" reserve a few special words like "special", "terrific", "caress" or "ooooooooh!" for players like Buddy, Cyril or Stevie J. know the nicknames for the best players so you sound matey with them. have lots of obtuse stats at your fingertips. otherwise just link the play with "ta", like "Viney ta Cross ta Jones ta Dawes"

  17. Obviously a bit more of an inside player than Flower but in terms of loyalty and professionalism when all around him aren't either,he has given the club some hope and pride when no others have.

  18. The knock on McKenzie's disposal is overstated. He has a disposal efficiency of over 70% in 2013 where he played as a tagger and got the ball in pressure situations. It was higher than players such as McLean and Melksham who played in finals teams and is very similar to Montagna. His disposal efficiency on the weekend was over 90% and he was involved in scoring assists for our second and third goal. His kick to Frawley in the first was a ripper. He's not fashionable, I get that, but he's effective in the job he does and he's clean with the ball. If the midfield goes past him then that's good for us but I think under Roos he'll have a role for a while yet.

  20. Do you drink whilst you watch the footy?, you would not have a Key Defender as a sub, even if he can go forward as he has in the past, Salem will be at Casey until at least mid year Why replace Evans?, and Terlich is not out yet, he walked off after the game without a limp, gone are the days we keep injured players on the field, Roos wants 100% And as for your comments on JKH....nobody agrees with you on Demonland

  21. I'm sure Nathan Jones isn't the type for making excuses but he did get a knock in the head early in the game and I think was still wearing the legacy of it during the week. Having been on the receiving end of similar (albeit at a far inferior level) these things sometimes catch up with you during a game and it wouldn't surprise me if that explains his lower output than usual v GWS.

  22. That list means nothing, regardless of whether Jones features in it or not.
    3 points
  23. Exactly. And the fact that he had such a big impact without actually having a huge game personally backs this up. He came in, did what he said he would, which was what we needed of him. I suppose the key difference is though that he's basically the only player we have capable of playing his role. So he is a role player, but a crucial and irreplaceable one at present.

  24. The presence of Dawes, even with his 8 possessions, shows just what we've been missing ONFIELD these lasts 5 years. Now with Jones and Grimes, who both played Captain's games yesterday, plus players like Dawes and Cross, you'd have to hope/expect that players coming through now won't have to deal with what many of our "he was a high draft pick, what happened?" players have had to. Perhaps no accident that Frawley puts in his best game for a long time playing alongside Dawes.

  27. "Retaliate first" - Jack Dyer, instructing his players during a final series "I only have two words for you men - believe in yourselves" - Jack Dyer, instructing his players during a final series "If you are not in bed by 12 o'clock, go home" - Jack Dyer, instructing his players during a final series "Tell him he is John Coleman and send him back on" - Jack Dyer, when told by medical staff that a concussed player 'did not know who he is' "Any time Carlton scores more than 100 points and holds the other team below 100 points they almost always win." - Lou Richards "Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to sail through the air for even longer." - Peter Landy "I think everybody gets caught up in superstitions. But I don't put much stock in them ... knock on wood." - Jason Akermanis, Brisbane "If you can't stand the heat in the dressing-room, get out of the kitchen" - Tony Shaw "Apart from their goals, St Kilda was scoreless in that opening quarter" - Eddie McGuire "It may have been going wide, but nevertheless it was a great shot on target" - Brian Taylor "They didn't change positions, they just moved the players around" - John (Sam) Newman "More football later, but first let's see the first half highlights from the Essendon v Collingwood game" - Peter Landy "Kicked wide of the goal with such precision" - Sandy Roberts "Wakelin conceded five, you don't get many of those to the dozen" - Rodney Eade "He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning regardless of what time it is." Kevin Sheedy on James Hird "It's basically the same, just darker." Jonathan Brown, on night Grand Finals vs Day Games "I told him, 'Son, what is it with you. Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, Barass, I don't know and I don't care.' Ron Barassi talking about Gary Cowton "I want to kick 70 or 80 goals this season, whichever comes first." Barry Hall (Sydney) when asked about the upcoming season "Luke Hodge - the 21 year old, who turned 22 a few weeks ago" Dermott Brereton "Chad had done a bit of mental arithmetic with a calculator." Mark Williams "He scored that goal after only 22 seconds - totally against the run of play." Dermott Brereton "We actually got the winning goal three minutes from the end but then they scored." Ben Cousins, West Coast Eagles "I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body." Luke Darcy "That kick was absolutely unique, except for the one before it which was identical." Dermott Brereton "Sure there have been injuries and deaths in football - but none of them serious." Adrian Anderson "If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again." Andrew Demetriou "I never comment on umpires and I'm not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat." Terry Wallace "Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw." Dermott Brereton

  30. In relation to Robbo's comment and those here who have a similar view ... The draft is a glorified lucky dip. Sure, we can all look back and put any given draft in it's correct order but that's precisely the point. It can't be done correctly at the time. It's almost purely about luck when we're talking about the top end picks. Besides all that, we have to wait at least 4-5 years before we can start to evaluate any draft. For a proper appraisal, we have to wait until all the respective player's career's are over. These kids are often only 17 years old when judged. I doubt that there's another sport in the world where a clubs future list is based on 17 year old's being virtually picked out of a hat. It's the players picked after the top 10-15 picks where a good recruiter comes to the fore. On that score, we've done reasonably well without unearthing any real stars. Even so, there is still a lot of luck involved with any area of any given draft. The Draft should be viewed as bit of a guide only. Any given 18 year old who comes to the club should be viewed as just another recruit - there shouldn't be a number attached to any such player. At least that way, a player can be judged fairly. Unfortunately, too many view the draft as if it's some sort of proper system. It isn't and never will be (that would almost certainly still be the case even if the draft age was increased to 20 years old) The proof is right there in front of us - go through any draft prior to 2007 and the proper order bears very little resemblance to the original order. There's such a thing as getting something wrong though incompetence as opposed to getting something wrong when "guessing" Those 2 wrongs shouldn't be confused with each other.

  31. How about that, after one win Jordie has become a straw man.

  32. Spencer reminds me of Strawberry O'Dwyer. A fair bit of mongrel about him. When fit Strawbs was a better ruckman than Jimmy Stynes IMO. I love Spencers second & third efforts. It would be nice to have some help from Gawn with Gawn playing deep forward when Spencer in the ruck. If not Gawn same role with Fitzy if he gets his mojo back. Spencer to rest on the bench.

  34. I'd give him credit for admitting he was wrong…but I can't get past the fact the he didn't rate Jones that highly in the first place! Fully agree with his view on the looks on people's faces in the Members. I sat in that same area and it's something that made me enjoy the win that much more - looking at the beaming faces of all of the Dees' children added a whole extra layer to the satisfaction of the win. Starting the song after the ground stopped playing it and having everyone join in was fun, too.

  35. Nev is playing this well because he finally had a complete pre season under his belt, without one injury set back and he has a clear role within Casey, and obviously enjoying his footy, he was kept on the list as a reward for his last six games at Casey last year and to see what he could do with a fresh start (Jade Rawling;s words not mine)

  37. Was interesting late in Q4 when Pedo had to go off because of the blood rule and Spencer had to come back on. They could both hardly run to get off and on the field respectively. Whatever is said about their skill, they both left nothing out on the ground, they gave it absolutely everything they had.

  43. Righfully so Song, but in Trengove's case I really hope he does find that form and win back his place. I believe he is one of the players who has put his hand up and made sacrifices to try and drag our club out of where it is. Taking on the role of captain was not something he should have been asked to do, taking on the responsibility of setting an example that your senior team mates can't is something I will always admire him for. I hope that he can regain a love of the game and find his feet with some basic form at Casey and develop in ways that were denied to him over the past 3 seasons. Whatever happens I believe his experiences will hold him in good stead for life after footy, but I think he deserves the chance of redemption at our footy club. It will be a great story if he can pull it all together and play for another 8-10 years. Don't forget he won't turn 23 until the off season; if/when he puts it together he still has the potential of a long career ahead of him.

Every player should be watching this guys tape every week to look and learn. Gee I'm glad he wears red and blue.
