  1. I don't know if Mark Neeld's approach will be a success or failure but he is certainly sending a strong message for us the supporters, the football public but most importantly, the players on the list. Train hard and train my way. Play hard and play my way. If you chose otherwise to either of these you will be at Casey this season (note the dropping of Green, Davey, Moloney, Sylvia, Blease, Morton, etc and the none playing of Gysberts) and at seasons end you will be gone. Will this approach be successful ? I dont know - but we cannot keep on doing what we were doing pre Neeld - half arsed, close enough good enough, I'm an AFL footballer so thats enough for me type performances and seasons. This is the most focused and directional I have seen this club in my lifetime and although internally I am shuddering at some of the trades I absolutely hear the Neeld message screaming in my ears. I for one say - Hurrah !!

  2. Build a bridge. The mistakes made were from a previous regime. They club has done something, they brought in Neeld. He's cleaning up the mess and turning us into a proper club. Next

  3. This trade period will make or break Neeld. He is doing whatever he wants and that's his right. If it works, great. But if it doesn't, he becomes one more coach to totally [censored] us and our list.

  4. I've been listening to TWR since the start of the trade period. In summary we have been slammed by Barret since the start, and after all the bs opinionated tripe he dished up this year, its clear he has an issue with the MFC - hack journo and a [censored] to boot. We shouldn't waste our breath our Terry Wallace. Apart from blaming the tigers woes under him due to lack of resources, he also claimed partial credit for their resurgent midfield today. Yesterday, after analysing West Coasts list he said the eagles don't have a ruck after Cox and NicNat, to which a caller pointed out Scott Lycett, he then rambled about how he's more of a forward. In short, the blokes opinion matters very little to me. What I'm curious about is why, as a club trying to become competitive, we are continously beaten down by these irrelevant muppets. As for all the people on here complaining about our draft period just think about the players regardless of draft picks- IN Rodan: Senior body, who fills a role for 1-2 years while the younger blokes develop. Win if he stays on the park. Pedo: Similar age to Martin but offers much more. I assume him and sellar will compete for the same spot, thus creating depth. Byrnes: Crying out for even a pass rate small forward this year, he's no star but will fill a gaping void for 1-2 years. Dawes: Straightens our spine, huge win Hogan: Looks the goods, fantastic prospect who has the rig to provide a contest from 2014. Barry: Prospect, doubt he will play next year, thats why the acquisition of a guy like Rodan was important. Viney: Gun attack on the footy, great attitude, mature body Wines/Toumpas/O'Rourke: If wines or toumpas will inject quality from next year, O'Rourke has big upside but will not play much next year. OUT Morton: has shown next to nothing after 70 odd games which is ample time to develop on your shortcomings, has terrible disposal especially on the run that has hurt us numerous times, soft, ran away from lade which I will never forgive him for. Gysberts: Inside midfielder who probably couldn't bench press 75% of his bodyweight and after many years has not improved his upper body strength at all which points to a terrible attitude, can't break into the 3rd worse team in the league. Martin: Key word here is promise. Has promised for years but delivered one decent season. Poor decision making and should be influencing games more than he is at his age. Cook (potential out): Drafted as a forward but without critical skills needed to play his role e.g. lacks pace off the mark, doesn't influence the contest nearly enough and has not come on like he should have in 2 years. Moloney: Flat track bully. Jones does his job far better. Rivers: The only one I'm dissapointed with, however, big questions over his knees. The inclusion of Pederson might soften the blow. Hardwick cleaned out Richmonds list over a few years, the same is happening to us - I just don't see why people are complaining, mediocrity is not fun, nor is getting belted every week. The mature bodies like Rodan & Byrnes won't be around by the time we make finals, but they will mean we are more competitive in the interim while our young list develops.

  5. There's no need for hysterics guys. The path is clear. We have recruited for a set purpose this time round. It's about a change of culture and filling some short term gaps while we develop Viney, Hogan, Taggert, pick 4 and some of the other youngsters. We will win more games next year and will be a more attractive proposition to free agents and others at this time next year. The journey has begun. Get on board.

  6. Mitch Clark was rated as a D pick up too

  7. it's a clear message to the playing group, just because you're pick 4 doesn't mean you get a game, put in or get out. I for one am glad somebody is finally putting the likes of Morton, gysberts and cook on notice that if you didn't go in and get the ball, you don't get a game. And in this case, you don't even get a chance at a jersey. this is the problem with the MFC and the so called "culture" supporters that think that it's ok to let languishing players who haven't put mass or play a good game for years get a gig just because they show potential. High integrity is pretty much Neelds message now. Thank god somebody is saying you play well, play to our standards and you get in the side. I for one am glad to see the back of the 15 yr old school boy bodies that are leaving the club.

  8. The DB mantra was "get rid off the old guard, get games into the kids". This strategy clearly failed, leading to a dysfunctional culture devoid of leadership and structure that culminated in 186. Neeld walks in and declares his aim is to make us "the toughest team to play against" In his first year, he is left with the legacy of the DB years. He restructures the coaching and management side of things, but is left with the same cattle. He makes it clear that what is needed is: 1. Fitness 2. Toughness 3. Defense The year ends with few wins, however, it is now clear to him who can fit in within his framework and who cant. He looks at who is available on the market, and quite successfully attracts a good number of experienced players to the fold whose main purpose is to enforce the culture HE is creating. Its clear to me now that Neelds strategy is broad and well thought out. He is cleaning out the softness and replacing it with toughness. He is instilling us with courage and determination.

  9. We started out with 3,4,13 and 26. We spent 3 and 13 (effectively the Scully comp) on Hogan and Barry as well as Dawes with the pick 20 (became 21) we had thrown in. So Scully got us Hogan, Barry and Dawes. We still kept 4, which I'm certain will be used on Wines. The biggest steal of the whole trade period was getting Viney in the second round. We traded out some guys who despite their lofty original draft positions were not in our best 22 (Morton, Martin, Gysberts). We added a bit of short term leadership in Byrnes and Rodan which cost us nothing and Pedersen who may or may not be any good, but couldn't be any less effective than most of the blokes wehave let go. I'd say we have done reasonably well, but time will tell. Our biggest loss was Rivers.

  10. No. Give Hogan 5. My childhood called. It wants Schwarta back.

  11. This is what I know about Gysberts and why he was traded- -he is not competitive at all in one on one drills -he could not bench press 50kgs and was very ordinary with the other weights -in today's football the club believed he is not strong enough to play as an inside mid and did not appear to want to improve in the strength area -his endurance is rubbish and again he didn't appear to want to improve. Anyone that went to preseason would have observed this first hand -he doesnt have a defensive side to his game which goes against the way neeld wants to play. Very similar to moloney. -he was not a neeld favourite right from the start because of his work ethic and unlike blease was not prepared to turn it around Neeld has made his decisions on soft footballers at our club and we are seeing the product of this. I'll admit I'm a bad loser but even more I hate watching us get pumped so often. I'm happy to move on guys that aren't competitive. Gys is one of those guys. Viney and wines would crush him easily now in that area and hogan has already stated he hates losing. These are the guys I want at our club. The high draft picks are just a by-product of us moving them on.

  13. If you are trying to re-build a club based on hard work, commitment to the plan, and hardness in the contest, then you draft OUT those players lacking in these attributes, and draft IN those with these attributed in abundance. OUT: Moloney, Gyberts, Morton (prob?), Cook, etc... IN: Viney, Pick 4 (Wines?), Hogan, Dawes, Pedersen, Byrnes, Rodan. No point holding onto a player who does not fit into the team or culture you are trying to build. Good luck Jordan. Welcome aboard Cam Go Dees.

  14. Papers talking about a straight swap of players. Gys for Pedersen. If we do that we have been royally screwed.

  15. It's not about being nice. It's about getting rid of contracted players without having to pay them out. We need the space and we didn't need them.

  16. Very misleading. If Viney and Pick 4 are not included then neither should Moloney, Jurrah, Morton, and Gysberts were out of the 22 by the end of the year if they were in it at all. How about this - From the Best 22: Out: Rivers In: Viney, Wines, Pedersen, Dawes, Byrnes, Rodan

  17. Now we have a 'warchest' of late draft picks.

  18. We've lost a couple of slow old guys, a couple of softies and one seemingly soft of the mind. We've gained a couple of quick old guys, young KPF's = structure. + Viney and Barry. I give it an A. I don't care what we gave up to get what we want, we got what we needed. Scattergun? At least it's not Barry the sniper Prendagast picking off his own men. The list needed to be shaken up, the culture needs changing, the club and Neeld have started it, I believe it'll work.

  19. I bought Adelaide Steamship shares ( which were blue chip) in the 1980's - now they are no longer in existance. Why don't people understand that what we drafted players at originally has no bearing on their current value when it comes to trading. Absolutely we have stuffed up picks (and those responsible are now gone and forgotten), absolutely we have failed to develop players but just because a player is drafted at no 4 like Morton was, I fail to see why this implies that we have to bang our heads against a wall and continually try (and fail) to develop him. Cut your losses and move on.

  20. Out talented skinny runts who did not buy into new regime. In hard bodied honest players willing to work hard . I will support it for now the skinny bodied youth approach got us no where so why not
    6 points
  21. I vote HELL NO to this deal. Gys is worth far more to us than Pedersen. Stick with offering pick 49. If they bite fine, if not then they can keep him and we'll move on.

  22. I'm not in favor of the Gysberts trade, but is a membership card actually flammable? It would be mildly embarrassing if you went on a tirade in front of Neeld and then tried to light up your membership only for it to fail to ignite.

  24. Best thing that's ever happened to this club. A good long overdue shake up. I've had enough of skinny kids and below par performances . We had to get the balance right. Still ave a lot of great kids in, Watts,Trengove,Tapscott,Blease,McDonald,Howe,Viney,Barry,Hogan and Possibly Wines. Pederson and Dawes are still young. It takes men to play this game.

  25. I did laugh when Cameron Luke asked Damian Barrett what Melbourne should have done differently and all he came back with was "set more realistic expectations".

  26. Barrett uses the term "scatter gun approach" to describe anything more complex than Goddard to Dons. A simpleton who believes his own dribble.

  27. Who cares? If anything those ratings reflect far more heavily on our wasted early picks in the past and failures to develop than this trade period.

  29. Neeld is responsible now along with Schwab . I thought we were supposed to have a strategy of a rebuilding club, letting go players, like Junior etc..we now pick up Rodan, Byrnes etc..and let go early draft picks in Morton & Gysberts. All I can say Cam&Mark, it is on your heads this next year after a disastrous 2012. I believe letting Gysberts and Morton go for virtually nothing is just downright shameful. If we do not win at least 10 games this year both Cam & Mark should WALK or the board should sack both.

  30. Cheaper than paying out his contract for next year as part of a delisting, opens up a spot on the list. 'How to delist a player who is still under contract, Lesson 1.' Viewed from the position that Cale did not want to be at the club, and the club did not want him, and nobody else was especially interested, this has been as well handled as you can reasonably expect.

  31. Odd hoax, this one. Maybe we need a hoax about Cotchin coming over to us.

  32. Way I look at it: Who would I trust: gysberts or pederson in the heat of the battle? Pederson. Who would I trust: morton or rodan in the heat o the battle? Rodan. Simple as that.

  33. If it's true, Morton for pick 88, Gysberts for Pederson, I'll be furious. Absolute joke

  34. Would be tough to break into norths midfield for jizz, he probably has more chance at Melbourne. I think Neeld can make something of him. Was great to see him debut for Melbourne with such confidence, and he stood up when everyone else was dragging their heels. He gave us a glimmer of hope. 21 years old , this is one you should hang onto Neeld.

  35. As much as I like Gys, isnt it pretty obvious to see what Neeld is doing here? BIG, MATURE BODIES. Its what its all about. Looks to be getting rid of morton and gys and co with a frame that wont hold up in the heat of finals. Neeld has brought to the club Clark, Sellar, Dawes, Rodan, Viney, going after Pederson, and i assume Wines will come also. He has a plan. Stick with him

  36. the fact that we were pushing hard for Dawes 12 months ago would indicate that he was on the radar.
    4 points
  37. For us to not get him, a team has to directly ignore his desperation to get back to Melb. A ballsy act for GWS or GCS, who are both already trying to suppress any overt homesickness within their playing groups. Fingers crossed. I know we were big fans of him as a junior. An MFC staffer told me we were likely to select him a week prior to the draft. Looked like Cook was too good to pass up!?

  38. Loved it when Wallace put it on Barrett to what is his "bee in his bonnet" about Melbourne. Barrett said that he would be staggered if Melbourne sat down before the trade period and planned to pick up the likes of Pederson, Rodan, Byrnes, Dawes. Wallace replied, "Well, Damo I know for a fact and it had been mentioned weeks ago that they were seeking Byrnes, Pederson." Damo: "Well, then ok...but, but Dawes and Rodan.." Jerk.

  39. For all those wonderful Dee supporters worried about our moves this year, let's reflect on the last few years. High draft nos. and yet we have failed to find a superstar (Trengove, Blease, Grimes could well yet emerge. I suspect they will)) We have not played finals for soooo long We have not been truly competitive. I think Neeldy wants a side that can compete. I want a side that can run out each week and give us a chance of victory. We are recruiting bigger bodies, we are recruiting Premiership players!.....more than anything else Neeld needs to be applauded for 'having a go!'. The worst scenario would be no improvement....this will not happen in my opinion. All of the recruited players have great attitudes, train very hard and understand what it takes to be successful. I hope the Gys and Cale find success, but I'll settle for Byrnes, Dawes, Rodan, Petersen, Hogan, Barry and Viney for starters and if we can get Wines....2013 will be an exciting year. It certainly has to be more exciting than 2012!

  41. Another last minute stupid trade for picks we won't use. WTF is the point?
    4 points
  42. We have lost Morton (9 games), Gysberts (1 game), Moloney (15 games), Green (13 games) and a backmen in Rivers who played most of the year forward. None of these are starting 18 players nor would they be next year. We have gained two elite kids (Hogan for next year) and have pick 4 to attain another, a premiership CHF whose not even at his peak, another key swingman who is proven to impact at AFL level and two mature bodied soldiers with speed that cost us next to nothing. If we can get a mid 30s pick for Martin and attain Jacobs in the PSD we will be significantly ahead. Oh wait but we could have done nothing and loaded up all on kids because that has worked so well so far. If anyone thinks we haven't done well they know nothing about footy.

  43. This is not intended to be the team that will win a flag. This is laying the foundations upon which to build long term success. We need to have some vision and look past next year.

  48. This is the first trade I'm a bit iffy on. Not sure of the need to get Pederson in and positive we (or Gysberts himself) didn't get the most out of Gysberts. Time will tell on this one. On 2012 form, its basically two VFL players changing places.
