I have been thinking along similiar lines to some of the above re stars over the last decade,

come next year's 150th game, can you think of any Melbourne player who will be selected?

(not counting S.Thompson and TJ of course).

If the following players have an awesome start to the season they could be selected:

Davey (A)

McLean (V)

White (V)

Green (A)

McDonald (V)

Bruce (V)

Robbo (A)

Jones (V)

Meanwhile, I think there's a limit to how much a recruiter can do. Anyone who is destined to be an out and out star and shows it by the time they're 18 will obviously go top of the draft. We've only been right at the top of the draft picks twice in recent years, 1997 (oops, Travis Johnstone) and 2003 where we picked up Sylvia and Mclean. Mclean has been interrupted by injury but is so obviously an impending star that it's not worth debating. Sylvia has been even more injury troubled, and hasn't been able to deliver consistently yet. Jury is still out if you ask me, given he is yet to have a pre-season.

A great many other top players are shaped by their first few years of coaching. A recruiter can't really do so much about that, but I think he's done very well. We are hopefully about to see a couple of mature players deliver their full potential.

And finally, Jared Rivers. Pick 20ish, Rising Star Award winner. So far has been cruelled by injuries but if they clear up then I would be shocked if he didn't claim a couple of third tall defender All-Australian selections in his career.

A recruiter simply can't be held responsible for superstars. Perhaps for a general rating of A,B,C,D quality players, but so much is out of their hands for the ten years and more after the recruiter's work is done.

One interesting point- at 'thedrafter.net' Melbourne under CAC is rated (by popular vote) the second-best drafting team of the last ten years, behind only Hawthorn which is of course influenced by the bulk first-round selections they've acquired in the last few years. This does not inlcude Rookie and pre-season drafts, either, where at the least Davey would push us up a little more.

out of interest, do you know steve harris, have you worked with him and could you elaborate on your experiences?

i am not saying he is not a problem, but apart from the odd comment on here regarding that turnover rate i have never heard a bad word about him, and would like to know any evidence as to why he is the reason and why it isnt other issues such as poor work place environment, poor pay, another staff member, lack of staff (resulting in extra work loads for others) etc. what makes you so sure steve harris is the problem?

There isn't a scandal here, it's a HR issue.

Harris is a fine person but he needs to provide some stability; change of behaviour? restructure? I don't know.

i'm not worried about the turnover because we have a new look group and every thing else was falling apart under ND, whereas now we have a fresh start with a fresh group

I'm not really sure if this is a bit naiive... But i tend to think that the fact CAC is thinking of moving on, is more of an indication of how well he thinks MFC is going.

Obviously we have had a terrible year last year, but we have a lot of good young developing players and he's just added some great kids to that mix. Is it possible that with his insider knowledge he thinks the Dees are in for a really good year (or few years) and that the importance of his role will diminish?

I think he looks like the kinda guy that relishes a challenge as I think most people in positions at AFL clubs would & do.

And to be honest, Richmond is in a hell of a lot of trouble and that would be the dream challenge.

Re-build his boyhood team from the dead. I think if i was in his shoes, I'd do the same.

Actually I know I would.

Or they could just be offering him a truckload of money.

A smart club will never rest on its laurels. Its always looking to replenish and maitain its competetive advantage ( or get one ) .

There maybe any number of reasons CAC is considerign moving on.. possibly the lure of his bohood club etc. maybe just more bucks ..who knows.

But Bails obviously doesnt want him to go. Im just pleased that despite the outcome that this club will no longer just lets thigs happen to it without makiing some effort to look after its own interests.

Hopefully this is THE attitude of the club in all matters ( big hint/nudge to club re 150th thunder and the AFL !! )

Brisbane have good youngsters and a supertstar forward, Carlton are picking up a ridiculous and (albeit unfair) amount of high draft picks and Judd. Im soeey rr but i agree with sleeve on this why do we not have superstars like other clubs that win flags.

Maybe we should relise that cac is good but what he picks doesnt seem to win flags,

the proof is in the pudding as they say.
