The Bummers have seriously lost the plot! Sacking Sheedy in the messiest way possible ("we're not; no comment; we are") 7 weeks before the end of the season made one think they had a readymade replacement (Voss?). Then when he says no, they try to steal Williams (still under contract) and distract Thompson. Then they overlook Bailey (he rings stride and doesn't get to first base). When they finally make a shortlist it is conditional upon whether or not Thompson might be approached after the Grand Final!! Then, another of their favourite sons is treated with great disrespect by finding out through the media that he is no longer in contention. What an amateurish organisation!! No chance with Judd now (if they ever really had one)!! How the mighty have fallen!

They're gonna be cracking me up for years.

I will say this, as much as ditching Daniher was ugly, at least it was done with a plan in mind and a professional outlook.

I agree.

Credit must go to Harris/Gardner. I have total faith in these blokes. They have provided our club with some much needed professionalism. They are smart and passionate. It is amazing, but after finishing 14th and sacking our coach, the club is probably in the strongest position it has ever been in! Well, in recent times at least!

How funny that he says "Judd will be captain!" then later says well its not really up to me, i think we know who runs the show at carlton, i reckon rats will have 2 phones in the coach's box, one to the bench, the other to pratt so he can get his instructions on where to play players.

C'mon guys cut them some slack. Afterall they haven't had to replace THEIR coach for nearly THREE decades and have just forgotten how to do it. :D

Go Dees

P.S Don't be like that Ash. Feel free to stick the boots in even though you are grossly outnumbered. :)

Carlton have fallen, Essendon is falling, hopefully now it's Collingwood's turn.

So they went through all of the above to simply promote the reserves coach! Ash, if you are reading this, what has Knights been like with the ressies?

Taken a pretty average Bendigo team to the finals 2 out of 3 seasons. Although lost a final this year to North Ballarat they shouldn't have [up by 5 goals at 3/4 time only to lose by 6 goals I think]. It probably wasn't the easiest gig, as I doubt the senior Essendon players really looked forward to travelling up to Bendigo in the middle of winter to play.

I am going to give him a chance. I doubt Essendon would go through the process of interviewing all the candidates and narrowing down the list and choosing someone if they didn't think he was the best candidate.

He's the new generation type coach they were looking for but surely they didn't have to go through all the drama and angst with Sheeds. It was badly handled and out of character with the Essendon administration which has been solid for so long. The Matthew Lloyd gaffe about the young West Australians being tradeable showed that. I think there are a few tough years ahead for the Bombers but then again I thought Collingwood and the Kangarood would finish 15 and 16 this year so what would I know?

Was Matthew Knights considered by Melbourne at any stage?

No.

But I think Essendon have made a good choice.

I love Sheedy but obviously, they thought it was time to move on.

I don't know Ash, but I guess it's interesting that the Bombers didn't even consider talking to Bailey after he contacted them - especially given his pretty good record as an assistant. I can only guess that they weren't that impressed with his work as an assistant at Windy Hill a few years back. I believe he was told that he didn't have the profile the Bombers were looking for. I don't know if Knights applied for the Melbourne job - but anyway, good luck to him!

I agree entirely. It took me a while to come to terms with it, but my club needs to move forward.

Sheedy will always be a legend at Essendon, but it had to end at some stage.

Jackson clearly stated that they weren't after the best available coach they were after the best coach. I found it amusing when he plagiarised Dick Pratt.

Well, they got their reserves coach.

*applauds*

Ash...this appointment smacks of panic to me . What do you think. Have Windy Hill got a case of the heebee Geebees going towards what will be the busiest trade week in many a year ??

This is what I wrote about the appointment in another thread :

I'm fine with the decision.

I heard Knights speak on 3AW last night and he sounded impressive.

I am a bit bemused at the hysteria over his appointment. Surely you have to give the guy a chance before you decide whether it is the terrible choice that alot of ill-informed people think it is.

He went through four 2-3 hour presentations before he was given the job. As did Hardwick, Sumich etc.

If people are naive enough to believe that the Essendon board hired Knights for any reason other than they believed he was the best man for the job, they are kidding themselves.

From what I can gather, he was football operations manager for a year at Port Adelaide in SANFL, then coached them for a season, has coached his own team at Bendigo for the last 3 seasons, sat in the box with Sheedy in 2006 and was involved with player development this season. Other than Sheedy, no person in Australia knows the Essendon list better.

I don't subscribe to the theory that you have to come from a Premiership winning club to be a successful coach. I can't remember Paul Roos having much success at Fitzroy, yet he was able to coach Sydney to a premiership.

Terry Wallace played in countless Grand Finals and premierships, and how is he going at the moment.

People can think what they want, but I will give Knights a chance to prove himself before I hang him like most have.

It just struck me...as quick !!

Here we have the essendon management saying one thing... they will go after a certain type..Thats on the record. Then their "star" choices fal lby the wayside out of professionalsim or disinterest ( matters not ) and then they make a 5 min appointment of someone who hasnt coached in any capacity at AFL level !! Actually...hasnt had much of any success coaching at all really..hasnt failed.. hasnt succeeded..

So you tell me...just how inspired is this selection..

just seems to me Windy Hill has gone from one stuff up to others all year.. Just an observation...Not malicious !! :)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
