I'm happy with that. I wanted someone different. I'm glad they just didn't go with sheeds just for his name. I either wanted hardwick or bailey. He obviously did a very good presentation. Everyone laughed when the hawks appointed clarko. Bailey has been involved with essendon in the 2000 premiership and the port one as well. In all the time he has been assistant coach he has only missed the finals once, so he has the finals experience. I know he wasn't the main coach but he would have had a huge part in the wins. I'd say well done melbourne and I'm looking foward to next year. I know there will be people who wanted someone else but I think we should get behind him and support him. Good luck Dean.

Appearently the result leaked out so they made the announcement ahead of time and a full press release will follow. Well done Dean and welcome to the MFC I think you will be great.

Watching Fox sports 513 and looking at demons and afl website and they havent mentioned yet but if its true then i suppose he must have been the best coach....

I wanted Sheedy as i belived we needed a bloke to market the club and we were safe knowing that Sheedy could coach knowing his record but im happy with Bailey..... Not that well known which might mean he may struggle to sell the club but im sure he will coach well and has had sucess at Port... Im just happy we didnt get Connoly and i hope the new regime is strong and cleasn the club out and makes us a tough team....

Edit

Well we certainly don't need anymore evidence to know that you.... hmmm, I better not finish that sentence

Welcome to the MFC Bailey!

I look forward to seeing your apperant ruthlessness have an impact on our soft side.

And thank you Melbourne for finally delivering me a great B'day present (seeing as we are always losing games or missing out on the top 4 etc... around this time of the year  )

If I knew who that was, maybe I'd be happy.

Well, if the best available coach at the moment is Mark Williams, which there is a good argument is the case, then perhaps Bailey is a great choice. hard to know, bc he has such a low profile.

Yeah.. well I'm definitely willing to be pleasantly surprised by him!

I had my heart set on Sheedy with everything that was circulating about him being the favourite, but I can't judge Bailey til he gets going.

I might Google him..

Good luck to Bailey and the MFC in '08 and beyond.

Happy Birthday Jaded!

Well lets hope now that Port get knocked out of the Finals early, so he can get into the club and begin to make his mark. Welcome to the club Dean. What now will the future hold for assistants Mark Riley, Peter Curran and Paul Williams?

Thanks.

It's not till tomorrow though.

I think Bailey will come down and speak to the team before they go on holidays next week.

Then he can concentrate on Port's final campaign (they are a chance to go all the way!) and still have a few weeks to prepare for the pre-season from hell.

BRING IT ON! :D

Congrats to Bailey on his appointment, now the hard work begins.

My preference was for Sheedy but I'm happy to reserve my judgement on Bailey until he has been in the job for a couple of years, but he definitely does have the ideal grounding for the role.

It will be interesting to see what he does with the list, whether he thinks it needs a slash and burn or whether he thinks it's good enough for another shot next year.

I might Google him..

this was from the AFL website a week or so ago. There's other testimonials flying around too....

DEAN BAILEY

The profile:

Arguably the lowest profile of the five coaching contenders for the Melbourne gig, but don't be fooled by Bailey's lack of promotion in the football media – particularly in Melbourne circles – as he has served an outstanding coaching apprenticeship. Originally from North Ringwood, the hard-bodied midfielder played 53 matches for Essendon from 1986-86 and 1991-92 before cutting his teeth in the coaching fraternity.

Five reasons why he should be Melbourne's coach:

* Has served an excellent coaching apprenticeship, having coached Mt Gravatt in the AFLQ for six years before being an Essendon development coach. Joined Port Adelaide in 2002 and was at the helm of its defence when it finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder from 2002-04 and won its first flag in '04. He is now in charge of Port Adelaide's midfield, with the Power second on the ladder.

* Now Mark Williams' right-hand man at Port Adelaide, Bailey was ready to step-up to the plate in round 10 this year when the Power coach was in doubt to lead the side, showing he was ready for the next level.

* Has been compared to Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, who has transformed the club into a genuine premiership contender this year, in just his third season. Similar vintage to Clarkson, who is 39 years old - Bailey turned 40 in January.

* Highly regarded for his teaching ability as a coach. Also possesses excellent organisational skills and great determination. Understands the difficulties players face in the game, since he had to work hard as a footballer.

* Comes from a recent premiership club and has been under the tutelage of four-time Essendon premiership coach Kevin Sheedy and Williams, one of the great coaches of this decade.

He is no longer working at the Power. That is why it got leaked. Port Adelaide decided well he can't be involved in our finals now and have dropped him for remainder of theseason, knowing this would get out Melbourne released the statement.

Go Bailey the Bald Badger!!!

Happy Birthday Jaded.

It's also Demons 32's B'Day 2day...

Kisses to both Jaded and Demon 32 from Jacey.

Dean Bailey has risen from nowhere and congrats to those who took 11-1 on 'other' a few weeks back to who would coach MFC.

Unbelievable decision. We had a real chance to snag one of the greatest coaches of all time who would not only raise the profile of this great club but also bring in sponsporship dollars and increased membership and we blew it!

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
