CASEY: Rd 03 vs Box Hill

Max Heath was colossus. I can see him replacing Gawn and doing it well.

The key forwards were all lively, playing different type roles. You wouldn’t begrudge match committee for recalling either of Johnson, Kentfield or Jefferson.

Adam’s just doesn’t have it for me, unfortunately. No stand out feature in his kitbag.

Early days but Onley looks a mile off the level. Seems timid despite having such a great athletic body for the modern midfield game.

Hearn played like Max.

Kentfield has all the ingredients to be a significant player for the Dees.

He’s strong, tough, versatile and can kick straight. I personally believe that given time he’s an upgrade on JVR because he seeks out physical contact and has the body size to cope, along with an excellent temperament for such a young man

Seriously impressed by how far Kentfield has come over the last 12 months considering he was a mid season draftee not to mention his bout with a nasty case of pneumonia.

I don't think a debut is far away.

Lets hope we have a coach that rewards good consistent players in the VFL ,a go in the 1sts .

And it was a great gutsy win Good On The Boys

I'm reasonably bullish on all of JvR, Kentfield and Jefferson forming a formidable trio in the future post Mihocek.

Luker must play with the Batman mask, and a cape to boot

I'm all for him being nicknamed one of Batman, Bruce or Bruce Wayne. Thoughts @Ghostwriter?

Agree with nearly all of your assessment here. Think the fwds still need time/jury out - but Heath yes big tick, Adams is nowhere and our key back stocks are a worry

I vote for "Filthy".

Incidentally, if you meet a bloke called Wayne Bruce, is it okay to call him "Manbat"?

Didn’t see the game but hugely promising result and reports on here.

I’m a Kentfield fan so I’m rapt to see so many glowing posts about him. But had I just looked at the stats (obviously not a substitute for actually watching the game) I’d have imagined Johnson or Jeffo would have had the better games - both had more disposals, scoring shots and marks.

Can’t edit my post but I wanted to add - can those who watched the game let me know what it was about Kentfield that made him stand out over the other two?

Was Max Heath injured in the last play of the day.????

Was down for a while. He played very well.

I only watched the first half and Jeffo was better then. More marks, score involvements and could have had a big day had he converted 2 relatively gettable shots. Kentfield I think only had 2 touches to half time but solid both marks inside 50 and converted.

Going off stats it looks like kentfield got more or the ball in the second half and converted all his chances. Personally I think they compliment each other well.

Max Heath. Clearly the Dees best player. Beat both Hawks rucks. Was scragged again without umps assistance. Knockdown to our advantage. If we had better mids at Casey, we’d dominate. Heath is definitely a future player.

We finally have a good back up for Maxey.

good age, huge unit and can play

Justifyinf why either Heath or Kentfield would have been better to play firsts this week in replacement of Fritsch.

I really want to see what Heath can do with Gawn, I think the combo of both with Heath spending time forward will be terrific

Jefferson let himself down with goal kicking - should have kicked 5 or 6. Interesting race between him, Luka and AJ for promotion

Kentfield and AJ have the advantage of being able to 2nd ruck. But I can see a world where JVR is dropped this year and it’s MJ Kentfield and Mihocek

AJ won't get a gig anytime soon, even with good performances like today

Kentfield is the higher ceiling prospect of the two who can also chop out in the ruck

Young guns 2025 draftees

Tommy Matthews. He’s a little pocket rocket. Had time in the midfield but often ran around without getting near the footy. Seems more comfortable as a stay near goal high pressure small forward. Loves a goal.

Xavier Taylor. Had two important intercept marks. Showed glimpses but still lots of development before a debut game. I like his composure with the footy.

Riley Onley. Like to see him run and kick more. Good penetration with his kicking. Good size kid. Likely we will mark him as “developing” this year.

Luker Kentfield. You can see how he fits as a key forward in the AFL. Good size. Runs to the right space. Nice kick and mark. A few more weeks and loads of goals will see him in line for promotion. He’s a real player imv.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
