POSTGAME: Rd 01 vs St. Kilda

On Kolt – we may have found his role as a run-with player. Send him to Brayshaw or Serong this week – keep them accountable the other way.

I was reading McClures article & he mentioned after each song we'd play Robbie Williams entertain you then the players song, which didn't happen.

I think that Let Me Entertain You was meant to be played after our first goal and all subsequent goals would have just the goal scorer’s choice played.

He wasn't even in Carlton best 22 every week, you don't pay big bucks for a player who is in and out of a sid, I think they just wanted to get him out of Carlton, just to get one on Carlton for some reason, to say hey look we've got a father of son out of another club, look at us we are a destination Club, I'm so happy that Flanders picked the Saints, because he can get a lot of the ball but he's a hack kick he's just ordinary

Said father being the St Kilda list manager probably had a fair bit to do with it. No conflicts, just chasing the best available talent I’m sure..

It's probably already been mentioned, but Max Hall is some sort of player. Watching the game live, he's got a level of toughness and skill that is rare. I'd argue he's almost the Saints 3rd or 4th best player but he's probably on peanuts. It's a pity he's contracted until the end of 2027, but if his trajectory continues, he could demand a decent pay packet the Saints might not be able to afford.

Yep he’s a jet - plucked from Box Hill VFL in 2023, great get

Not sure what anyone else thought of the umps but bloody hell they were atrocious.

Felt like they had a Saints jersey on and was very annoying and frustrating.

Hopefully they improve but I won’t hold my breath.

Maybe, like the players, they’re a bit rusty. Also, they now have a few new rules that they have to get their heads around. I refuse to believe that they are somehow under orders to disadvantage our club… that’s one conspiracy theory that doesn’t sit well with me (I’m not saying that you are a conspiracy theorist DemonOx, but there are those who definitely fit the bill)

I’m of the opinion that they probably aren’t paid enough, considering the level of abuse that is directed at them.

Let’s not best around the bush, Lever was woeful in the first half. He was too busy pointing and instructing others that he forgot to take care of his own player and was more often than not out positioned or trailing to the ball, or he left his man to be at the contest but did not influence it.

His 2nd half was better, in that he didn’t hurt us defensively. Petty for mine was our best defender (and I haven’t been a Petty fan - but he was good). Disco did ok as well.

Max was a behemoth in the last and that was by far and away Sharp’s best game for the club, especially his 4th quarter.

Some interesting team stats I was just looking at.

It looks like the Saints had more of everything, except 2 crucial stats – we had more bounces, and more tackles.

Either we are being very efficient, or they are squandering the ball.

Rename them - Aint Skilda

Max Hall is the son of Brad Hall who played with Melbourne between 1994 and got delisted during pre-season in 1996. Brad didn't play any senior games for Melbourne. Brad was an Assumption College student.

When was the last time we had a KPF who kicked 6 goals?

Petty did once against the Tigers I think but then went to average around almost a goal a game. So I'm not sure if he qualifies.

Just want to say that the Demon crowd was electric!!! Probably the first time in a long time that it was so fun and so loud!

i wonder whether it might be hayden young he goes to - someone who is an onballer who is also able to go forward as a target and also defensively to play 'behind the ball'

if kolt had nailed that set shot from 30m or so on a slight angle then i'd have given him the points over nas

Well... they weren't brilliant but fortunately they didn't adversely impact the game... it actually seemed able to flow on a lot.

A few off decisions both ways. The biggest howler was when ball clearly left the field before the arc yet it was thrown in. Lever was rightly miffed imo.

What a great day to be at the “G”, very warmish conditions, we had our grandson with us at the game. Great to see everyone on L2, a lot of excited conversations and hello’s, picked up my coffee and pie on the way in. Jeez what a game of footy, fast and furious, Saints are hard to play when they have ball in hand lots of short kicks, handballs and marks and We are impossible to play when we get our run on game going. The Demon Army were loud and boisterous lots of flags, Heads and that drum beat WOW. We are super fit and played great team football. Roooooo and Mihocek were both brilliant in their own way, Max humongous, our four debutantes all fired, Kolt, Culley and Sharp were a revelation and the rest of the boys played like a reasonably well oiled machine (thanks Penrite), the music got better and louder as the day wore on, must admit I think it was when Sharp or Fritta kicked their sealers Sweet Caroline came on and all around us joined in. All in all a great day at the “G”, what a win.❤️💙👌💕

Winning an absolute nothing game is all they have.

Also loving their supporters being angry at the media for mentioning their $25 million spending spree and them being 0-2. Wankers.

I think it’s great also that we got the win against a presumed mid-tier team when so many players didn’t have their best games IMO. I mean that in a positive way too, round 1 so we’re rusty but we got a good win and didn’t wilt in the last.

Saints missed a lot of gettable goals but so did we. I think early in the last we missed 3 easy goals and marks to which in previous years we would drop our heads and start panicking. But we didn’t this time! .........

There’s a lot of work to do but there’s also a lot of ceiling left to get better. It’s very exciting and so much to be positive about our direction. Gonna be an interesting year to say the least.

Well said.

I think the Saints are a mid tier (or higher) team which make the win so much better especially when its clear it was very much a first hit for probably a majority of our team. Quite a few players will improve on their outings yesterday. We should get better.

It was a very entertaining game to watch and we looked composed. So great to see how much Roo enjoyed himself.

And MAX. In a league of his own.

Send him to half forward to harass Jordan Clark.

Whately castigised the big spend this morning pointing out in 8 years TDK has shown nothing about being a top flight ruckman, as shown by big Max yesterday, yet saints spenr big on him. Aprt from that an absolute huge tick to the Dees from him.

You could see the rustyiness of the team due to being first hit out - but resliance and perservence got them through.

Character building by King and coaches.

WTF was with the Umpiring, 3 x HtB for Melbourne not given... One was paid holding the man

Plus the HTM on Culley in the goal square. It was putrid again. Nothing different.

Celebrating a nothing game. Pathetic.

How do they feel about their millionaires club now?

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
