Watched the game with a StKilda mate. We both thoroughly enjoyed it ( me probably a little more lol )

We both commented on how different the Dees play now. Aints played much better than v Pies. God only knows why Ryan returned 🤔🤷

Well done King...

We ought to get better with practice ( imho )

I was the same. I went to the game with my St Kilda supporting friend. He comes to lots of games with me, so I always tell him he’ll be converted soon. Today wasn’t the day, but we both thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I’ve been extremely busy with work and family stuff lately so haven’t been keeping up on how we’ve been going in training etc. so I didn’t know what to expect. Now, I’m excited for the rest of the year. What a change.

Didn’t realise until watching the kayo mini but Latrelle’s goal came from the Kolt running off the $2m forward pocket, one of his 8 score involvements and probably about 45 of his 359m gained.. cracking game.

The Saints and Pies must be dumb as tree stumps to offer us Steele and Mihocek for so little. With all our changes, and Viney injured, they were very strong today.

And I really want to mention Jiath. I was genuinely concerned about his foot skills during the 2 preseason games, but for the most part he was wonderful today. For a bloke that tall, his first three steps are so quick that it breaks the pattern of play in close.

Latrelle has a lot to learn if he wants to be a solid contributor across the H&A season, with his light body and lack of physical impact showing up badly at times. But with ball in hand he is dangerous and mercurial. Love what he brings and as he gets bigger, fitter and stronger he will a human highlight reel.

Top 5 non finals wins ive seen at the G in my 40 years of going there. It wasn't just because of what happened against the Saints last year. it wasn't just because of the new game plan and finally not having to watch them play with constant indecision, it wasn't just the excitement of watching all the young players stand up... it was that a team who has had a broken psyche since the 2022 finals series, when put under real pressure at the death, didn't let negativity stifle them. they played positive, brave football, and they didn't even look like choking. Well done Stephen King, its only one game, but you just might have created a winning culture at the Dees again.

I wasn’t sure what to expect today, went in expecting the worse (new game plan, new coach, new players, youth) but hoping for the best. Once the saints kicked 3-4 goals in the first quarter, I started to get a bit worried. Was really impressed and excited by the brand of football and the buy in by all the players.

Pros:

  • Winning a close one for a change

  • ball movement

  • Best game I have seen Petty play in years

  • Max being max

  • Roo producing after such a sold preseason

  • The enjoyment watching the Picketts.

Concerns:

  • lever, appears to be more suited to a zone defence, he looked lost, slow indecisive when guarding + ball in hand

  • Watching it from TV was hard but we looked second to the ball a lot, don’t know if that is by design?

PS - it’s hard to laugh at the saints for over paying when we’re paying a bloke $3.5 mill to run around for another team…

Loved Windsor in the middle.

It was so nice to see van rooyen be on the receiving end of some great passes.

It was also nice to see us kick straight

There’s definitely a player in there, he’s not going to be perfect but he’s going to get better

A great win to start a new era. The Pickett's will supply a lot of excitement for many years. A very happy walk home after the game.

Latrelle's running goal was the highlight of the game for me. The build-up and the roar from the crowd when he kicked it was incredible and I thought really got the crowd into the game and got us going.

There are some players that have a real connection with the crowd, just doing their own thing and he's definitely one of them. Excitement machine and hard worker in one.

I think it's fair to say our back 6 is a work in progress.

Our application today was great but if we allow Freo that much time and space inside next week we will get murdered.

Xavier, CJ, Rick must see some improvement in the next couple of weeks.

Steele showed balls of steel today! great acquisition to the football club along with Checkers

Max, Roo, Petty, Kosi, Culley, Sharpie all very good in Salem's 200th.

XL isn't a defender. He tried, and his disposal was solid, but his poor defensive skills hurt.

My highlight was Sharpie - played above and beyond. Trelly well I have seen him at training and did what was expected. For his first game, fantastic.

Great to be back at the G. Great to have a fantastic win. Great to see so many players perform so well. Not so great that we seem to have swapped benches this year. I've been sitting in the old Olympic stand my whole life and I reckon that's the first time we haven't had the team's bench right by us. Boo

Agreed.

Looked much more comfortable in the ruck compared to last year. Had some solid moments down back as well.

Big year for him with May now retired.

Perhaps the new rules suit him? He certainly seemed to have quite a leap.

Kings press conference after the game, he was proud and articulate.

I kid you not, I was totally bewildered with Ross Lyon’s. Aside from being an arrogant f-wit, I honestly could not understand what he was rambling on about at times.

Long live the King (and you have no idea how grateful I was when Buckley did not get the job)

By the end didn’t even care if we lost, footy was fun to watch again! Lots to work on and doubt we’ll be able to get it done against freo in Perth against a much better forward and back line but if we keep improving that game plan we will be a must watch each week. Reckon 6-10 and a final or two is definitely achievable.

Mihocek is a game changer for roo.

Steele was a steal and a big upgrade culture wise on Oliver (as much as he was and will be a club great).

Trac on fire but he wouldn’t be if he was still at the dees so get over it. He was done with us (but again will always be a club great for his normy)

And finally, who would have thought letting good footballers play on instinct might be a winner? King is the modern coach we need. Thank F the plan isn’t just to get as many F50 entries as possible but rather make them count!

People owe Sharp an apology.....

Mihocek straightens us up.

Max is the greatest

And Roo - take a bow son. Great game

That win will instill a lot of confidence in the lads...

Sharp and Kolt copped it early along with Lindsay, Lever, Fritsch and Salem.

Thought Sharp was really important in the 4th and got involved in transition chains throughout, Lindsay got better in the second half and Kolt was ok on NWM , not great but curbed him around the ground outside of their F50 where NSW had him. Fritsch who I’ve been critical of worked hard to get up the ground but did like a few have some moments that were poor.

Lever was caught in no man’s land a few times and Salem had some shockers but they both had some good moments but there’s room for improvement with both

A great win

Not negatives but some things to consider

Tholstrup staying with W/M when he went forward unbalanced the defence. Lever had to play deep instead of high and found himself many times on small forwards.

Lindsay is a much better player when he is up the ground, and is not suited to a more defensive role.

Would have liked to see Langford swap roles with Culley forward in play, as it would cause opposition defence problems with trying to choose who to pick up.

Sparrow had 72% TOG but I couldn't work out what role he was playing. He wasn't deep forward, wasn't used at centre bounces and wasn't close checking anyone. Wasn't playing a linking player role. Maybe it was just one of those days, but I hope he gets a specific job to do.

Was at the game and while there were some glaring errors the effort was terrific.

Culley what a game considering he was injured leading up to the game.

Best game I have seen Roo play and great to c him take those contested marks. L Pickett wow welcome to the demons.

Still work to do but great start.
