Vale Dennis Cometti

Featured Replies

Legendary broadcaster Dennis Cometti has died aged 76. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends. RIP Dennis.

Genuinely shocked to read this, Cometti was one of the best commentators in the games history. The voice of many calls from the late 80s/90s and a lot of very famous and funny quips. Very sad.

Very sad. One of the last genuinely great commentators.

His last game was calling the Dees premiership for Triple M Perth.

He will be remembered fondly.

What a commentator.

His commentary of our 2021 flag is my go to commentary when re-watching that game.

Commentators of his level are rare. There have been a few in cricket but in AFL he had no peer.

RIP to a legend

Loved Dennis so knowledgeable, entertaining and humorous, we also loved his call off our Premiership game.

Condolences to the Cometti family and friends.

So sad ……. Dennis was an icon in his field!

The best ever footy comentator.

A legend and a Dees supporter.

I don't know who said it first, but he was described as having a voice like liquid chocolate.

Thankfully, he didn't waste that voice and gave us so much to enjoy in the way he called cricket, football and other sports.

Was self reflecting as I was taking a shower about the past and how those who we all grew up with are slowly passing away, whether it be a beloved movie/tv star like Robert Carradine or a national sports commentating hero like Dennis Commetti, the past is the past and we won’t ever get it back again.

Even playing through Resident Evil: Requiem, the newest game in the series that featured Leon Kennedy, a protagonist who made his debut in the late 90’s, to see him at 51 years of age as a character and thinking about the past and my childhood and how I grew up with this character, it was emotional.

We all get 1 life and for the rest of our lives, we wont ever hear or see from Dennis again. Can’t imagine how Bruce is feeling being his long time side kick.

This is a loss that I’m feeling quite a bit, tbh..

Very sad.

I remember listening to him as a kid in the late 80s and early 90s and thinking he was a somewhat dour caller, or at least way less compelling than McAvaney and Landy.

I don't know this was because, being under 12, I didn't get his subtle humour or whether he was just way less confident in revealing his wit than he was in the 2000s and 2010s.

Anyway, I think the funniest people are self-aware and self-deprecating, and that's what made him such a joy to listen to when I was older. His obvious fondness for the Demons didn't hurt, either.

A figurative and also literal giant of Australian sport - I had the pleasure of once encountering him ducking his way out of a lift at the 'G.

I came to AFL about the time his presence was peaking and his voice and style are synonymous with the game.

Would I even be so invested in the game if not for his beautiful blend of calm enthusiasm? An enthusiasm which always seemed sincere, unconfected, and give space for (and probably amused by) the rest of us periodically losing our minds.

So many examples of his unique style but there are two quotes which I remember but have never seen referenced. The first was when WCE had played a dreadful first half and came out firing in the third. Dennis said “If the Eagles were a VCR they’d be flashing 00:00” The other quote was said when a player was awarded a free kick but was still remonstrating with the umpire. Dennis said “He’s doing a Hugh Grant, that is… ‘why would you?”’ He was referring to Hugh Grant being busted with a $10 prostitute when he had Elizabeth Hurley as his wife. 🤣

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
