I have fingers crossed for Luker so Batmania can become Melbourne again.

  • One for the history buffs 😉

imagine if that had been the name chosen give batman's relations with the indigenous of tasmania...

batmania demons would have been an interesting team to barrack for against the future tasmanian devils, that's for sure

Sorry, but as terrible as this is for poor Luker, the comments here are just so typical of why the MFCSS acronym was ‘coined’. Sure he kicked 24 in 17 VFL matches last season, but it’s no guarantee he will have continued success at AFL level. I want him to succeed, and I also want Jeffo to succeed, but the fact that they are unavailable for the start of the season, is not the end of the world as the tone of some of the comments might suggest - I mean to say, we don’t even know the results of the scans yet, so how about we shelve the doom and gloom stuff at least until we learn what damage has been done (then we can panic!!! j/k).

In the meantime we have Mihocek and Melksham who we know are proven goal scorers, and as was shown in Friday’s ‘game’, we are now looking for leading forwards as opposed to just bombing it long and hoping. If we can stick to King’s game plan, I see plenty of reason to be optimistic.

I think the overwhelming feeling here is for the kid himself. His health issues and bad luck has been well documented. Most feel that he deserved a break and when he finally was getting some continuity (even allowing for a facial fracture) this happens 2 mins into the game that then was immediately stopped for 30 mins. You have to admit that must be tough for him to accept.

Yes, there is the team impact and frustration that another player has gone down (it is a supporter forum after all) but I'm reading more concern for the person than selection.

I think it is reasonable for people to feel disappointed that a promising key forward started to show some signs has a potentially significant injury

Agreed.

To me, it's not so much his being available for Rd 1 that matters, it's more about him getting a break and oppertunity to debut at AFL and build his game further and hopefully develop as a potent forward option for us, to eventually take over from guys like Melksham and Mihocek.

This injury has the potential to disrupt that to either a minor or significant extent. If he's not available for Rd 1, so be it, but my main concern is that it doesn't become season ending or take a massive chunk out of his season.

Could we field a player with similar body shape and attributes and hide his face under a mask for Round 1?

You mean play Uncle Bitter??

Both he and Jeffo going down on the cusp of the season is terrible luck both personally and from a club playing level. Our forward stocks are dwindling!

Other posters have expressed my sentiment perfectly. This is more about Luker than it is the impact on the team. It has nothing to do with MFCSS.

The only consolation for mine is that the club has this incredible ability to keep LTI players in a good headspace for the entire time they’re on the sidelines; in Luker’s case it won’t be difficult to keep his spirits up since nothing seems to faze him greatly. He takes everything in his stride and isn’t given to self-pity.

Wonder if the AFL would give a couple extra days for results to come back to allow us time for Luker should he have done a LTI.

Pretty sure tomorrow is the deadline.

Probably need to change our name to Collingwood for that.

Last year we were granted an extension (AMW sustained an LTI in the praccy vs North a day or so after the deadline). The general feeling is that we were only granted the extension because Carlton was in the same boat and even by the AFL’s own standards it would’ve been unfair to help one team and not the other.

A typo that would’ve kept me awake all night

Its nail biting waiting for the knee outcome.

Hoping for the lowest grade at 3 weeks.

He was looking good preseason. Has that strong, smart forward look about him worth developing.

It’s obvious we are all hoping that the news regarding Luker is good, but if it works out that he is out for the majority/ rest of the season, are we able to fill his spot on the list? Who is available? If May retires, we are down 2 key position players, who could we possibly pick up? Just curious to know who might be able to fill spots.

Paddy Cross has been unofficially training with the club every Friday and involved in all intraclub type games where numbers are needed.

I understand he’s not a key forward but he may be the one.

Ah Mu a good development option. Jacob Blight is ready-made but more of a back.

Won’t be an ACL..looked more Medial if anything with some luck it’s not even that but I’m ngl I’m dying to know ... if May retires that’s our chance for Ah-Mu.

My guess is that it’s a minor one if anything but I’m an optimist

I think the cut off is tomorrow?

I reckon we’d wait for the mid season now if we had a spot

The difference is he was showing good form and then played well against North. He showed more in a 3-4 practise games than Jefferson has shown in 3 years.

ok, my apologies to all… I think. I did misread the room. It’s nice to see so much support for Luker, and like everyone else, I just want him to recover well and then have a good run at cementing his place in the team.

So do we assume Lukers knee is fine, or it is currently being regrown in a lab?

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
