A big, big year then. Some other notable events:

  • The Sunset Crater Volcano in what is now Arizona, USA, erupted for the very first time. This volcano is still there today!

  • The Seljuk Turks, a powerful group from Central Asia, began to invade Anatolia (which is modern-day Turkey). They captured important cities like Caesarea and Ani. This marked the start of their expansion into this region.

  • On June 9 1064, the city of Coimbra in Portugal was captured by King Ferdinand I of Castile (a kingdom in what is now Spain).

  • Harold II, who would later become King of England, was shipwrecked in Ponthieu, Normandy (in modern-day France). He was then taken captive by Count Guy.

  • The building of the famous Duomo (cathedral) in Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, began in this year.

  • Borivoj II of Bohemia, who became a Duke of Bohemia (a ruler in what is now the Czech Republic) was born

Yep, and after being three goals up at the final change in the Second Elimination final Essendon somehow managed to extend their finals drought by another year.

Wouldn't mind a signature walk off song after a home MCG win, and after they've played the theme song twice. At the moment they just play random songs as background noise.

For example, after a win Carlton play Oasis - "Don't look back in anger"

Are you sure they don't play Don't look back in anger after a loss?

Showing your age or your bias there Rjay.

You sound like my dad when he complained about the Beatles back in the day.

Probably, and I thought about this before writing.

...but seriously they are very average.

She gets by trying to be outrageous and that's a very old song, I've heard it all before.

There's only one worth considering if not Enter Sandman......

Hell ain't a bad place to be 😎.

And please play the whole song and only play Grand ol Flag when we win.

old dee's list would probably be

my old man's a dustman

itsy bitsy yellow polka dot bikini

purple people eater

any franky ifield song

Heroes by David Bowie. I remember hearing it a few times in the 1990’s before our games and it was inspiring.

I remember after we won the flag in '21, the broadcasters were interviewing Jack Viney on the ground and 'Heroes' was playing in the background around the stadium. As one of the players who was there during those bleak times, he described his journey with the club to get to that point; and with Bowie's beautiful classic as a soundtrack THAT'S when I cracked up and wept like a baby!

*Edit - I wouldn't have it as pre-game pump up song though - too emotionally arresting.

This was on repeat for me in the lead up to our smashing of Jeelong in the '21 PF:

Moby “Extreme ways”

Oh baby, oh baby

then it fell apart

Oh baby oh baby

Like it always does!

Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin would:

GO SO HARD

Be very funny

Only happen once as there would be a lot of complaints.

Demon reference though…. ‘I WANT YOUR SOUL’

This is how "Enter Sandman" should be done......get the crowd involved....leave the team song to the end of a winning game.

Ooft that goes hard.

Imagine getting that many people there and getting into it. Surely the boys would be hyped.

It is mad, but we'll never get that atmosphere.

That 60,000 home fans in a rectangular stadium.

I liked Enter Sandman, also don't mind Hells Bells, probably better suited.
But no doubt they'll try get something for the younger generation.

Could not disagree more Rjay.

Out of interest have you seen them live?

I could not count how many hard rock bands I've seen live. From aprox 1983 when i started regularly going to gigs, there very few seriously good hard rock bands who have toured Australia I've not seen.

And Amyl and the Sniffers are right up there as one the very best rock bands I've seen live.

The band, who toiled away for a decade in Melbourne before breaking out when they took London by storm a few years back is super, super tight and Amy Taylor is a force of nature. And powerful as all get out in terms of her personal politics and in your face anti misogyny.

Far from being performatively outrageous she is one of the most honest, singular, real and direct rock performers ive ever seen live - up there with Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Iggy Pop, Rob Younger, Brendan Huntley (Eddie Current and the Suppression Ring), Nick Cave, Donita Sparks (L7) and Curt Cobain.

But i guess that's the beauty of art - we all see and hear things differently.

Funny that I was at the 21 GF and stayed on and I can’t remember Heroes being played or anything else after the game. But by then I was emotionally floating off to another planet.

In '65 I don't think we realised how much help we needed....

It's certainly been a long and winding road since then.

I liked hells bells. Have no idea what that rap stuff was this season.

However why not just walk out to our theme song, or is that just to simple

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
