The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Can’t wait to see the big rooster with a new fast ball movement game plan and 1v1 looks inside 50

Big break out year incoming

The change to five interchange may mean we won't need to use JVR in the ruck so much and allow him to be a pure forward. I think that will help him.

Both of these.

Roll on 2026.

Alternatively, if Mihocek gets on board, does JVR have it in him, with the right conditioning and development, to be the 'extra midfielder' that Jackson was for us?

Wasn't he already 193 cm when first drafted?

I thought he would be a tad taller by now.

I dont want to sound negative, but no

Started the season really poorly, looking very out of sorts; leading to the wrong areas etc.

Put in some very strong performances in the 2s, didn't sook, just got in with it.

Even looked to link up well with other forwards including Jeffo at times.

Finished the season strongly, here's hoping he starts where he finished and goes on from there.

As mentioned a faster more direct game plan plus a Mihocek type up forward could really help Jacob van Rooyen have a break out year plus a Max Heath type playing 2nd ruck would also be a big bonus.

Maybe he has been dragged back down by some of the negative Nellies on this site. 🤔😡

I'm dead against bringing in Mihocek. I'd have TMac back to FF and JvR beside him or at CHF. No ruck work for JvR - full time forward to work on his positioning and contest work. Needs to start 'clunking' his marks - the key attribute of all good forwards.

Needs to work on forward craft, needs to work on playing in front, leading and a big emphasis on actually marking, ball bounces off his hands a lot more than it should. Seems better in the ruck than the forward line. A big 2026 for JVR.

You are mistaking the very reason for Mihocek bring recruited.

It is to provide another credible opponent for the opposition defence they will need watching.

It’s not to recreate JVR as Jacko or not to assist him in rucking more but to keep the 1,2, and 3 defenders occupied by each forward in a much more meaningful contest to produce higher scores.

Needs to decide over pre-season if he wants to step up and lead our team or just be happy as an also ran.

Yes he’s still young, but he’s got to show more hunger and a want to influence games.

Mihocek may be OK for one season and would be a list clogger for his last two. Kicked 15 goals in his first seven games this year, and six goals in his last seven. He's done .

Won't make it!

I think there is nothing wrong with his desire. I think that playing him as second ruck often brings him into the game. But he does need to stick his marks. I expect he knows that, actually.

He only has a two year deal I think.

Can't believe people are writing this kid off.

Low on confidence in a team struggling to connect mid-forward, whilst taking the best defender each week.

Reckon a fresh start under new coach and game plan will be just what the doctor ordered.

Felt like JVR was on for a good year then got the back spasms after a contest in the preseason game. I’m most likely making excuses that it hindered him and he was forced to carry it but it made no sense for his career to stall the way it did otherwise. Hoping he’s right to go, really liked his attack on the ball in season one.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
