Callum Twomey has reported that Bassett is returning to SA.

Still had 1 year to run with us, but is heading back home.

Very well thought of as a coach, but will probably white-out "Coach at Melbourne for 2024 and 2025" from his CV.

So King will now be bringing in his own midfield coach (assuming Jones will remain part of the midfield coaching group still), a development coach, and a forward/defense coach depending on if Chappy stays with the forwards or goes back to coaching the backline.

That's 3 of your top 4 coaches, which is great. Means he can bring his own people, while keeping a couple of familiar faces for the group.

If he can steal Kelly from Geelong that would be ace 😁

Wha?

We just appointed a head coach (quickly and efficiently, too). Did you expect us to hire new assistant coaches before we appointed a head coach?

Figured as much from Today's presser, deducing since they mentioned Jones it wasn't him, obv not Chappy -- so one had to be Bassett.

Excited to see whom Kingy has in mind, Kelly would be amazing but prob unlikely Geel lose another one.. Maybe Jennings? that'd be fun!

Was only 25 wasn't it?

Yep. I think they keep Chappy to maintain some continuity. Makes complete sense for him to go back to backline coach where he's had most success.

They are already in the door, King just wouldn't name them today out of respect for those leaving ie Bassett, Williams and he also said he wanted to win job on merit rather than whom he was bringing in with him, a comment I found utterly intoxicating :)

Is that right? He will be able to put it down as a clerical error.

Agree that was well answered. You did leave out the bit where he says "Me just coming in might be all the change thats required" and "If the opportunity came and there were a couple of openings I'd be happy to go to my network". Of course he was simply being polite and respectful with this answer to the coaches who have left, present and leaving.

So I'm not sure of Kings new assistants being 'already in the door'. But I think as we see now with Basset leaving (and hopefully Jones as 'baby sitter mid coach' too) that King has clear ideas of who will be coming in to replace those assistants that have now left.

Last year was one of our worst ever for scores against, not much lost IMO

Richmond have come for Chaplin. They're his old club. Wouldn't be surprised if he moves after so long at the Dees. Watch this space.

Possibly LT but Chappy was adamant that he was staying at the club, looked like come hell or high water to me.

Good.

He never got the scrutiny he deserved for how poor our defensive system was this season.

Honestly he struck me as someone Goody brought in simply because they’re mates

His work with our defence this year probably underscores that too

"What are these two years missing in your work history?"

"Oh, uh, I was in prison. Yep, that's it."

Please allow passengers to alight from the train before boarding.

But seriously, what an intriguing moment. The little murmur implying that his potential assistants would have been a point in his favour does make me sit up a little.

There's been a lot of quality people around him, throughout his career.
