State of Origin is Back

State of Origin lost its appeal for me once we had teams from S.A., W.A. and Queensland in the competition.

I doubt I'd be bothered watching it and my only hope would be that none of our players were injured.

Can’t wait for one of our players to do an ACL 🙄

Please don't 'Jaded'...there are some words that should be banned in spite of freedom of speech.

I just hope none of ours are available.

Club football is the pinnacle of our game.

This jealousy of the NRL needs to stop.

Let them have something...

He will want to play

And stupidly we would let him. Let's see how many other veterans put their hand up.

Reckon it’ll be a lot

Head office will incentivise players to suit up

Zero interest.

I loved it when I followed the VFL, but it's completely anachronistic in today's national competition.

Massive excitement in year one, players chucking a sickie in year two, 20,000 people watching games against the Allies in year three.

If Max plays we shouldn’t be accused of stupidity because “let” isn’t a factor. If Max wants to play, Max plays.

Again I have concerns about the direction of our game, a return of State of Origin being the least of them. Will be interesting to see how many players put their hand up to play.

Would have had a slight interest if it was against SA for nostalgic reasons.

The players say they want it, but let's see how many of the big names are still on board by the time 14 February comes around.

I'm guessing the clubs will have the final say on whether star players are available or not.

Zero interest in this.

No shade for the those that will enjoy it as a spectacle, but really don't see how there's an allure to this in the current AFL landscape.

I had always thought State of Origin had a long, venerable tradition. It's silly in retrospect, but I had imagined the aura it commanded in the 80s and early 90s had existed for decades previously.

Nope.

I knew it had faded badly by the mid to late 1990s, but I'd never realised until today that it only started in 1977.

Just a small thing really. But, like others have said, I find the whole return uninspiring, and any wistfulness is further diminished now that I realise it was only a big thing for a dozen or so years.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
