I completely disagree that it would be good fans. I have spoken to do many Melbourne supporters who have said great Buckley's not our coach now I can renew my membership, for every happy supporter we got a high profile coach there would have been an equal number divested it was Buckley.

Everybody can get behind King.

I was thinking of downgrading 2 Redlegs memberships to GA. Will now probably keep the 'Redlegs'❤️💙

God I hope he does soon. I've been one of his biggest fans from the get go and this waiting is driving me nuts😵‍💫

I am still angry about this [censored] stupid decision appointing some 2nd rate dud who only ended up coach of the Demons because nobody else seemed interested enough! How [censored] embarrassing!

Adam Simpson, John Longmire, and Hayden Skipworth not interested at all! Nathan Buckley only having lukewarm interest. Why?! Are we that much of a basket case?!

This is like Dean Bailey in 2007 or Mark Neeld in 2011 all over again!

By all means, continue to laugh it up at me. I don't give a flying [censored]. I am entitled to my opinion and I am allowed to disagree with others. We will see who is right in the long run! If I am wrong, I will happily eat my own words with chocolate sauce on them! But my gut tells me this has been a huge mistake!

Hopefully, at the very least, we appoint a senior assistant like Ken Hinkley or someone else to help support Steven King. Otherwise, he will be absolutely thrown in the deep end.

What a total laughing stock our Club is. I have been a Melbourne Demons member for over 26+ years and besides our Premiership in 2021, it's been nothing but disappointment and frustration!

Anyway, I am done. I am still far too angry at this stupid decision by the Melbourne Football Club. I am going to have a break for a long while until we get the [censored] homebase finally built at Caulfield Racecourse! If we can't do that the Club may as well [censored] fold!

Skipworth was never going to get it. He pulled out just to save face. This is a guy who lost to McQualter for the Eagles job. Bullet dodged imo.

King on the other hand, probably would have won the Eagles job had it not been for his health scare on the day of his interview.

I liked the idea of Bucks because I thought his profile would help the club, but, I and many others on here, had lingering doubts about his ability to actually coach. Just ask any Collingwood supporter and they get confused as to why everyone was keen on Bucks.

The club has run a proper process and King was the best candidate. Let's get behind him.

I'm looking forward to the first King's speech to the playing group which hopefully they share on social media.

From around the traps and looking logically, when Graham Wright had that discussion with Bucks at Collingwood which led to his “ resigning “ , it was likely because as with most ex coaches, he had lost the players,

Bucks even said the message had become stale and a new voice was needed. Sound familiar?

Until I see firm evidence to the contrary though, I believe Bucks had the job, the AFL came hard with a massive offer and Bucks accepted it and then gave answers that basically eliminated him. Saying you are seeing another club and won’t commit until after that meeting would eliminate any candidate.

Anyone want to predict Bucks won’t be Coach of Tassie now? The yachts are sailing up the Derwent as someone posted. Bucks will be announced as Tassie Coach without a process in the next few months.

Maybe we got the better Coach, hopefully that is the case.

I just hope the AFL is compensating us for what I perceive as their interference in our process. Candidates withdrew because they believed Bucks had the job. Sure it is the Tassie consortium, but we know who is behind them,

Never any good at “expression” much better at “sums”

Late 2020 till mid 2022. We won far more than we lost. Since then to now the exact mirror image. Problems everywhere whatever the cause. We were going no where except downhill on a Buller black run!

Traumatic but we have a clean break, And for the past few weeks the stories coming out of the club have been managed pretty well,

Hope we keep up the dribbles of good news.

I'm in a weird mood atm but I find this really funny. Our coach is named after a horror writer, we have a player named after one of his novels (Salem's Lot) and our second name symbolised horror.

You can't really script all this 😅

Just don't borrow Pet-racca Semetary or C(l)arrie at your local library 👻

  • Can't claim credit for these, read them elsewhere 😁

I am very happy we chose a coach earlier than latter. If we are keeping N.Brown ( Good club man) as an assistant coach then we will be doomed and that applies to the rest of the [censored].coaches. Also we are going to sacrifice a couple of big names in order to get down in the draft order.

It’s an appointment for a coach, not the secretary-general of the United Nations.

Nah not at all. The audacity of a bloke to go that deep into a process only to expect us to wait to see what the other hot chick has to offer.
We have to start acting like we have more dignity than that.
Hopefully this is another fail in a litany of Aussie rules failures for FIGJAM

I look at another way Buckley was honest in his conversations with them, as they with him, as he was meeting with the Tasmanian officials on Wednesday, we chose not to wait, and that’s fair enough, and so they made their decision, no big deal.

Impressive article thats for sure.

Coaching resume speaks for itself and seems the process was done very thoroughly as Guerra said at the start.

If we were in the finals race would we have sacked Goodwin?

he’s still absolutely jacked! Might have to slot him in at full forward as a playing coach yet

Can someone please explain the current negativity around Jones and Basset.

I understand that both of these men have been the line coaches in a team that has lost more than it has won over the past 2 years and so their jobs may no longer be guaranteed, but why so much ardent distaste and grief from Demonlanders?

Basset is building a very good coaching resume and Jones is an MFC superstar who played a big hand in calming the waters with both Clarrie and Trac. If they are not the right men to move us ahead under new coach Steven King, then fine, that is a reasonable discussion, but the heavy handed anger and loathing directed their way is a bit too much.

We won't know until the boys play next year. Just listening to bucket response on the process. The successful coach would have outlined how he would get the best out of the current list and how he would build the team over the long term. King was the best at doing this. He has also worked in multiple successful clubs and got to know their systems and how they worked.

What we don't know yet is the team that is going to be around him and implement his plan.

Personally I am happier to go with a younger new coach with different ideas than the experienced group initially spoken about, that weren't interested. Even bucks was still on the fence, you don't want that in a coach.

Will be very happy if he emulates the coaching record of the guy in the background.

Don't know anything more about him than has been publicly posted, but he's our man now.

Let's get behind him and the team and looking forward to some great season ahead.

Can anyone share what he's like dealing with the media? I think Goodwins lack of spark with the media made him, and the club, a perceived easy target. It's obviously not the most important qualification, but a strong media performer can definetly keep the Fugazi noise down.

This is a significant feature of the role. I hope the club also supports him in responding to press conjecture with a positive and consistent response.

I think you'll find his name is N. Jones.

  • Welcome to Demonland: Steven King

The Melbourne Football Club has selected a new coach for the 2026 season appointing Geelong Football Club assistant coach Steven King to the head role.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
