Sounds too much like Kozzie. When we adoringly chant for a player like the psychos we are we’d prefer folks to know for whom we chant 😜

Big risks can have big returns

Correct that he hasn't been fortunate enough to have been playing Coates league but there are quite a few examples of players taken from other pathways that have proven more than capable at AFL level

These kids all mature at differing rates, the opportunities presented may be quite different based on a whole range of factors

He is still very young, but I like the fact he has been playing against mature aged players albeit at a lower level

Get him into our system, get the right people around him (coaching, conditioning and players) and hopefully he will be another diamond in the rough

One of the greatest raw talents we have ever seen at the MFC was plucked from obscurity - anyone remember that bloke from Yuendumu Magpies (Liam Jurrah)

I absolutely rate clubs who take a 'risk' on young players, particularly Indigenous, who don't have the opportunity to tread the private school pathways in cities huge distances away from home and family. They have it so much harder in many ways. There's countless kids in corners of the country who have exceptional skills and potential, but will probably never get an opportunity.

Can someone please advise on the following?

  1. How many players with indigenous backgrounds are now on our playing list? It's at least 5 (May, Pickett x2, McAdam, Mentha). Any others?

  2. Is 5 (or whatever the current number is) the most we've ever had on our playing list?

In 2009 we had 6 from indigenous backgrounds (Wheels, Flash, Jurrah, Jetta, Bennell and Wonaeamirri).

Having looked at all the midfielders thinking we would be looking for replacements for 5 & 13, I was somewhat surprised by Lattrelle’s choice at Pick 12 but now realise that we are on a rebuild, our backline looks pretty damn good with the addition of XT and CJ.

Whereas we have a distinct lack of mid to small forwards to back up the young talls coming through. So a big Welcome to Latrelle Sumner-Pickett another exciting young forward coming into the fold. I am really looking forward to seeing Latrelle, Kozzie, Chandler and now Mathews sharpening us up in our fwd 50. Wahooo.👍😁💕

Hmm after a bit of thought and a look at his stats it appears he is a late developer or lack of oppurntitues. I am hopeful more than confident.

So we draft Latrelle who looks like he’s at least 30.

Then we draft Matthews who looks like he’s 13.

Go figure 🤷

One thing that I think is a positive for Latrelle is he played 3 games for Norwood under 18’s in 2023 and he had:

15 disp, 2.2 goals

18 disp, 1 goal

14 disp, 2.1 goals

So if you average that out it’s 16 disposals, 1.6 goals.

Thats with a late December birthday and without continuity of footy. Plus who knows what he was up to with his personal life.

If he continued that form across a full season (and had all the talent and highlights) he would’ve been drafted high in 2023.

They perhaps don't select on looks?

As pointed out on here the thing that excites me the most about him is his body size. If he's able to translate his talent into making full use of his mid-size body he would be a massive weapon for us. Like all the other draftees, let's not put pressure on him. Having Kozzie at the club will be the best thing to help him settle.

Warms my heart that hes in 33 🪄

A bit like female jockeys in horse racing. They have to do it much harder to get to the top but when they do they have worked harder and had to jump over more hurdles to get there. Look at Jamie Kah (now Melhman) she won the Caulfield cup and Melbourne cup double. If a male jockey was showing that promise they would be gifted rides on the best horses. Now she is like Kozzie or Waganeen-Milera they have to work harder but when they rise to the top it is a thing of beauty

since when was a small forward graded on their number of disposals, he needs to be invovled in scoring chains, goals, defensive intent. you can make some argument about spargo here, but he didnt do the goals/pressure part either. picketts do, its in their blood.

Time will tell. Has it been suggested that he has exposed form re the highlighted? These would have translated to increased disposals.

His main selling point seemed to be 38.10 in a lower, lower grade.

And of course, being related to Kozzie. This is a sugar hit but if he isn't 90% Kozzie, it complicates selection managing addition relationships.

I believe the pass mark for a top-fifteen non-KPP is 7 matches in their first-year. For alleged KPP top-fifteen pick, it is 5. We shall see.

Digressing to Spargo, in our golden two years of 21/22, he did apply pressure. When you saw him competing at half-back, you knew we would win. He didn't recently but then he knew someone.

If he’s so far off it why was every club in the immediate picks following ours also looking to take him, they certainly didn’t need a family connection on there list to see his potential.

Kozzie-fever.

Did you drive or catch the tram down to Glenelg to see him play those games?

I am of course, omnipresent. I also refresh my memory on-line, e.g. https://sanfl.com.au/league/clubs/glenelg/1022677/?league=sanfl&season=2025

So as people say 16 disposals and 4 goals in his first game at SANFL level. But 1 goal and 6 disposal, then 1 behind and 8 disposals for the next 2 games.

You draft on the traits and natural ability of the players rather than output

If they think he will explode in the professional system, based on his highlights, I'm inclined to believe them

Gosh, who to put my faith in?

Proven gun recruiter Jason Taylor or random forum poster? Tough, tough choice.

Don't worry about his reserves form, how about his seniors form in the SANFL

He's going at 16 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, and 4 goals a game*

*PSA - redblue whatevs, take a beat if you were about to furiously rebutt the above point. It was a gag - I know he's only played one senior game.

It must be the restricted view from the dumpster. But he played 3 games with the next 2 yielding 1 goal and 6 disposals then 1 point and 8 disposals. refer https://sanfl.com.au/league/clubs/glenelg/1022677/?league=sanfl&season=2025

You do realise that jurrah didn’t have a successful career? 36 games is an average return. Yes, it’s successful from the position that he came from but if Pickett only played 36 games I’d say this pick was a bust.

Yep, sadly I do realise that fact

We have had a long line of super talented forwards during my time as a supporter that for a variety of reasons haven't had the stellar careers their talent justified

My comment on Jurrah was not that he had a stellar career but more that he was plucked from relative obscurity - the non-traditional pathway and showed very quickly he had all the weapons to compete at the very highest level. Why he failed to translate all that talent into a long career is another story

Latrelle is a risk - one I am hoping pays big dividends - it may not - such is life
