I have to say I am not a fan of this role; strategy and driving to a North Star should be of shared understanding and goal and not the responsibility of one person.

You're correct, rpfc, it SHOULD be.

However, given we're coming from so far back, it is probably a good idea for someone to have two hands on the wheel for now, as it were.

I am assuming that this position is outside of the soft cap and is seen as administration, though. If it's in the cap, my thoughts are almost diametrically opposite.

I don't know why I formed this view, but I had assumed the role was long-term strategy. For example, understanding where the AFL product will be in the longer term, such as (say) in 7-10 years' time. Our club should be making decisions on player retention and selection taking both a short-term and long-term view. The short-term decisions should be the responsibility of King, Lamb, Taylor and Richardson, and equivalent for AFLW. The longer-term decisions should be the province of the Board, CEO and Ned Guy.

To make those longer-term decisions, the club needs to understand as best as possible what the competition will look like. What will be the rules of the game? Will it be a 19 or 20 team competition, or something else? What will be the future of Next Generation Academies and the Father/son, father/daughter rules? What will list sizes be? What will happen to the rookie list and other structural issues associated with list sizes? What will the salary cap be? What will be expected with injury management (eg, concussion rules)? And so on. There's a lot there for someone to be working on while not being distracted by the current day-to-day stuff.

We might have to get the round balls out again!😜

I’m a fan of the Guera era. Not sure what this bloke is actually doing but he will have a strong purpose. All our appointments so far have been spot on since Guera came on (even slightly before) when he was working in the back ground

Our major sponsor appointment was brilliant.

I think we should smash the cr-p out of the Club and Guy, before we know what the role actually is and whether he can do it.

We really do need an irony font so people don't misunderstand some posts on here.

I was looking for it when I did my post, but alas couldn't find one.

Don't ruin the Eeyore's fun!!!! They are having a great time finding fault in everything.

Well some are convinced of the successes of the club on hope and trust (re: training base in Caulfield) so why shouldn’t we provide our opinion on this ‘strategic’ move.

I tried to find the font dripping in acidic cynicism but they ran out at Bunnings.

Another appointment exemplifying how unattractive a club we are.

We've been in market for 4-months to land this HO Strategy role, approached senior personnel in footy, media and now settled in a third tier AFL house staffer.

This is coupled with the aspiration to land a Snr coach (no offence to King) and failure to attract established assistant coaches to bolster our coaching panel.

Would love to be more optimistic about this new chapter, but it's hard to be when no one wants to come near our us.

An AI hallucination of this appointment briefly appeared at the European Marine Energy Centre website.

Basically, AI assembled;

'Melbourne decision'

'Former boss'

'ending time at AFL HQ'

And concluded Melbourne was ending Ned Guy's time as the boss of AFL HQ.

It is hilarious in its way, but if there are any C-level executives on here, please remember to expunge AI from your organisation before it gets someone killed.

Has he ever played the game to have an understanding of Ball movement??

I think it’s clear he will Synergise backwards overflow and integrate interfacing functions.

Or maybe take 2 years to write a mission statement

Sorry, getting flashbacks from my last job

You could download Cynical Slab Serif. There's light and heavy variants and even a polite version..

Sounds a lot like the tasks my baby Sam is working on.

The 'integrating interfacing functions' part is great fun, but I could do with a little less backwards overflow, synergised or not.

Your point? Has Chris Fagan?

Chris Fagan was a very good player AND one of the very few who transitioned from not having an elite playing background. Thats my piont@

Like some posters here....

Has anyone gone through the similar roles at other clubs and put a query against their appointments which may challenge other appointed staff? Dont jump at shadows.

JFC some of you are hilarious.

It's an off-field strategy role. Playing the game is irrelevant. Off-field roles at multiple clubs and the AFL itself are relevant however.

Hopefully Ned brings something positive to our new off-field leadership, football management, and changing board.

Ned Guy was also Jake Lever’s player manager when he was traded to us in 2017.

Wow player manager to ball movement strategist, could be snookered or pot in the black!
