Assistant Coaches in 2026

Featured Replies

Let’s say you’re the new coach of the MFC.

You get to pick your assistant coaches

What team are you building around you?

Tigers chasing Chaplin.

Its been reported elsewhere that Radford going to Eagles and Bassett may go back to SA.

Potentially, Nathan Jones the only coach left.

The new senior coach can choose his own team.

Well what do you know the incoming coach would like his own team around him.

I guess that's a thank you and good bye to Selwyn.

I'm intriuged by how this works. How can Buckley or any of the other assistants vying for the Melbourne job put together a team until they've got the job. And why would the best coaches be available? I would think that someone like Chaplin would surely want to have a chat with our new coach and if he doesn't like the direction / approach etc then he's got the Tigers up his sleeve.

Would anyone be surprised if Chaplin went to the Tigs?

I wouldnt, i say that had a lot to do with why he didnt want to go through the process at Melbourne.

He has been a good for us but imo, every that was around Goody needs to go.

Fresh start for everyone, new coach gets the his preferred people around him.

Chaplin is a very good line coach and Yze knows this. I wouldn’t want to see him go. He did an amazing job with our backline while in charge.

get daisy pearce

Daisy was an assistant at Geelong AFLM, she's been promoted to head coach of an AFLW team, the next step for Daisy, if she wants it is head coach of an AFLM team.

i'd take her over buckley

How about someone like a luke bruest as a development coach? I heard him on the radio the other day & he expressed his desire to head that way.

I mean he's had success, knows about opportunities & speaks well

Richmond looking to poach Chaplin

Guerra said on Radio this morning - we will move forward with our “TWO” assistant coaches.

Assuming 1 is definitely leaving…

We’ve heard Richmond are into Chaplin

Has anything been announced?

Merge thread please

Steven King’s big footy network will work in our favour for coaches. Matthew Scarlett, Joel Corey and James Kelly are all targets for King. Few more names being worked on also. Hopefully King’s relationship with Bartel will work in our favour too (Bartel was spotted touring Port Adelaide over the weekend).

Geelong legend Matthew Scarlett remains an assistant coach of interest at Melbourne.

The Demons have Scarlett among a number of options to help support newly-appointed senior coach Steven King.

But as premiership teammates at the Cats, Melbourne is quietly hopeful the connection between the pair can tempt Scarlett to make regular trips up the highway for a coaching role.

Scarlett hasn’t been involved in AFL clubland since leaving Geelong at the end of the 2021 season.

An AFL Hall of Fame defender, he played in three premierships with Geelong and is a six-time All Australian.

Yesterday, Melbourne CEO Paul Guerra shed light on why the club hired King as the new senior coach.

He was announced last week after 30 prospective coaches were interviewed.

“A number of reasons. He’s a standout person for starters, a great family man,” Guerra said on SEN’s Fireball.

“We loved his articulation of the game plan, particularly the contemporary side of it. We love how he’s using technology to inform that as well.

“We just love his ability to communicate. We think he’s the right choice for our team with where we’re at right now.”

Interested in why he left in 2021 and didn't work for 4 years.

Attempted to ruin Jordan Clark’s career by refusing to play him and didn’t get on with the other coaches.

The next year Scott implemented a team first policy among his assistants and won the flag.

He’s a local footy coach with a champion players resume.

💯 Agree. Wouldn't touch him. Chaplin is a far better assistant to lead the defence.

King worked with Jennings at the Dogs who has been great at GWS.

Does he live in Geelong? Driving to Casey would just about be a day trip.

Yep just those two with Chaplin in high demand. Port tried to get him back as well as Richmond. He’s the only one I’d be trying to hold on to. Not to mention we have lots of money available in the soft cap after Choco left as head of development also. Fair few new faces to come in.
