I'm happy Buckley is in the mix. I would prefer him but if someone is perceived to be better than him, that will be fine.

Regardless of whether we’re open-minded in this process or Buckey is fait accompli, Richardson hearing from the top-rated assistants from across the league would be invaluable.

The coach should be asked firstly how you'd fix our forward line in the fact we deliver the ball properly & how'd you get them to lead separately than all go to the one spot.

If they gave premiership points based on who won inside 50s, we would be on top of the ladder (18-5). If they gave the premiership points for marks inside 50, we would be 13th. (8-15).

Fwiw. Fritta and Melksham are both in the top 30 for marks i50 per game. For 'midfielders' both Pickett and Petracca are in the top 10. Hopefully, the new coach can work out the resr.

They would be the shortest lads in that 30… besides the bloke from GWS

Brendon Lade, James Kelly and Danny Daly formally spoken to.

Shortlist to be whittled down to 6 for further interviews.

Buckley, Enright and Skipworth the favourites for me. Giansiracusa the Smokey.

Buckley still hasn't said he's interested

Please take tge well intended way..

Does he NEED to tell the world...... or just the Panel ??

He still has to fox/box clever in the bigger paddock just at the moment Id think.

The way it's measured is fatally flawed. And that means you get results like this:

Disposal Efficiency in 2025:

Tom McDonald 85.3%

Ed Langdon 77.2%

Massimo D'Ambrosio 70.6%

Zach Merrett and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 68.8%

If it measured skill, the least skilful player in the league (with over 180 disposals for the season) would be Nate Caddy.

I don't even think it's somewhat useful or you can take something out of it. It's a complete junk stat.

Maybe what you should do is take it with the context.

A good HB should be above 80% efficiency.

A good inside mid should be above 60%

Different expectations for different positions.

It's like basketball, you don't expect a Center to have a high 3pt % but you do expect him to have a high on the rim efficiency.

Correct and Elliot Curtis Stringer etc. Its just not about size and giving a contest. You have to have inate forward sense and beat your opponent.

And speaking of, couldnt help but think watching Toby Green taking 2 amazing hangers in the final minute to save the lead for his team was everything we missed on Frriday night.

Yep, that's where it can be of some use, particularly KE.

That said, even then it has limitations - eg statistically what's the meaningful difference between say an 80% or 81% fie say a half back flanker.

Bur like most stats they are often not that useful in isolation, which is how they are often used.

For example comparing a half back flanker whose role is to initiate transition triangulating say KE, score involvements and clangers would give a good sense of their skill set and a foundation for comparison to other like players.

Doesn't really explain Langdon and D'Ambrosio, though...

... unless you think Langdon is a far more skilful footballer than D'Ambrosio...

... or if you haven't seen much of D'Ambrosio, what about Langdon versus Langford? Who's the better user?

To me, what I see at the footy rarely lines up with what I see in DE stats.

Kozzie is one of the most creative and deft users of the footy by foot I've seen in 35-odd years. His disposal efficiency stat suggests he's one of the very worst in the league.

He only has tell the panel, but if he has told the panel he's interested, that information would of come out by now

It's not as simple as that.

Some players, like Zorko, Gulden and Wanganeen-Milera, will take on incredibly risky kicks that can be invaluable when they work, whereas many players wouldn't even attempt them.

See C.Salem. I assume his DE is quite high, but his 25-30 disposal games are far less damaging than those you listed with lower DE.

MELBOURNE

Hire Nathan Buckley.

If a rival coach emerges to blow the coaching panel’s socks off in coming weeks, then so be it.

But he was at the peak of his powers by the second half of his coaching career even if it was time for change when he was moved on by Graham Wright.

He nearly won a flag in 2018, lost a rain-sodden prelim to GWS in 2019 despite a last-half domination, won a final in 2020 as the “Dirty Pies” travelled to Perth to isolate in a Covid year, then was sacked halfway through 2021.

He has the profile to sell Melbourne, the relationships to deal with high-maintenance players (Clayton Oliver, Christian Petracca), the excitement factor to convince players like Judd McVee to stay.

Of course there will have been regrets at Collingwood, with the club’s lack of a star key forward meaning they suffered some of the connection issues the Demons still suffer.

At Melbourne he wouldn’t have a quick fix even if Jacob Van Rooyen had a better finish to the season than his start.

He would surely decide to keep Christian Petracca, even if a decision looms on Clayton Oliver.

As incoming CEO Paul Guerra told ABC Radio on Friday night, there are no concrete decisions on players until the new coach arrives but he is optimistic Petracca will stay.

“I hope so. All of those conversations, there will be no speculation about what we will do in draft and trade until the new coach starts. A new coach comes in with a different style and game plan. We then need to map our list to that game plan and work out what players we need to look at to target and perhaps what players might need to look for new homes.”

The push from Fox/herald sun to get us to hire Bucks is so strong you have to wonder if they rate him or just can’t stand him and want him gone.

it is really stark, isn't it?

i'm presuming / assuming his naked ambition for the role is even more pronounced amongst friends as it has been directly with the medja

he wants it BAD

Keep an eye out for the article saying Kane Cornes is a secretly Gifted coach from channel 7. Maybe we can get Caro in to head up our development and TJ running the fitness dept

Just on Oliver against the Pies ...

The eyes test told us that he hit a number of targets, rarely bombed it long and was creative with his handpassing

Then referring to the stats ... Clarrie had 30 possessions at 87% DE

So 26 of his 30 possessions hit a target

So the DE stat can be of some value if broken down properly. For instance, Clarrie has had a number of games this year where he rarely had any effective kicks

Again, the eyes test on Friday saw Petracca turn the ball over too much for a player of his class

Petracca had 28 possessions (14 & 14) but his DE percentage was 64% ... most of his handpasses found a target but his kicks went everywhere

So in my view, the DE percentage can be measured but the eyes test must be factored in at the same time

In a nutshell, Oliver didn't waste his possessions but Petracca was wasteful (although he did impose himself on the game in the 2nd half and won a lot of contested possessions/hard ball gets)

Source? Or this is gut?

It’s a bit of both I guess.. reading between the lines of the updates I’ve received. They have been scarce which I’m seeing as a positive and Guerra’s interviews Friday alluded to a clear need to act commercially in confidence to stop the leaks.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
