Bucks wants the job, he wouldn't have stayed in this long if he didn't.

But he's now squaring off with the best assistants in the league especially those from Collingwood and Geelong who have spent 60 or so hours a week for the last 4 years on the cutting edge of innovation.

Meanwhile Bucks has been mucking around on Best On Ground and getting Whateley brained on SEN.

He has the advantage of experience but it's hard to know just what that provides us. His media profile likely helps us little, if anything we would do well to be decidedly out of the spotlight for a while, even if that hurts the financial bottom line. That's far more valuable to Tassie than us.

All in all, the leaking of apparent lack of interest to me just sounds like a guy making sure he's saving face for the strong likelihood we hire one of the assistants instead.

That's how I read it, too.

Those treating this as a fait accompli are well off the mark (thankfully).

For me it isn't whether Buckley is the best person.

The issue is the unbecoming way the AFL is putting lots of mayo on the Tassie job to stop him joining mfc (if he is offered it). And to create a blatant campaign by Caroline Wilson is very poor.

Also, I'm not fussed that he hasn't won a premiership. Right now regular top 4, PF, occasional GF are looking pretty good to me!

Tassie pulling out all stops to get Buckley involved next year.

AFL appears to bring fwd VFL and VFLW start up to 2026

They are also dangling a carrot:

monday-cal-culations-finals-make-heroes-history-looms-for-nick-daicos-how-josh-dunkley-trade-call-shaped-three-clubs

"But in the background, the Devils are also dangling the keys.

"The opportunity to be Tasmania's first senior coach will be on Buckley's mind, with the possibility of a flexible start-up plan next year allowing for his media commitments before taking on the role permanently down the track ahead of the Devils' proposed 2028 start in the AFL".

"...its start-up list rules should be officially announced later this month and it is getting more commercial support off-field and adding staff internally'.

tbh, I find the AFL's campaign effectively working against MFC's interest very distasteful. They have sunk to a new low imv.

Its the AFL way. How many times has our club been shafted in the last decade. It continues to amaze me how we dont go full offensive on here. I would hope that Smith and Guerra are a bit more experienced in dealing with these [censored] bags and know how in time to fire a few back at the AFL.

Was always going to happen. Even with three Hawthorn footprint in Tassie, Collingwood has a HUGE support base there. Getting Buckley on was always a priority.

This is why we can't have nice things.

(Insert head in hand emoji).

All the rats are up and about sticking the knife in.

I cannot believe what a horrible shady organisation the AFL is.

They shafted us all year, and when we reacted by saying the truth, they get grubby Media Hacks to do their dirty work. No wonder all football contacts I know, think the AFL is a compromised body and should bear the brunt of a Commission investigation asap, with heads to roll, and I would suggest to MFC to pursue a meddling aspect to this whole, ugly now, business.

It would be a shock if a potential coach didn't do a 'stack of research'!

Nothing to back up his opnion - not even a reference to a rumour or 'parties not authorised to speak'.

He has no idea!

Its a perfect example of the media 'echo chamber'!!

Danny bloody Edmund trying to impose his opinions on the process, I love the term ‘echo chamber’ 👍😁

You are entitled to your opinion that nothing detrimental to our Club is taking place and nothing unfair has happened to us this year.

The first and only timed I cried at the football. I was in my 30’s.

Sitting in the car for an 1 hour waiting to exit the car park didn’t help much either.

I was coming back from the country on a bus. I had to crouch on my seat as the speaker was in the roof and reception was poor. When we jumped in the cab at the bus depot in Melbourne all over the cabbies radio they were barracking for Melbourne. We arrived home at my mates house and listened to the last 15 or so minutes on the radio. The rest is history. I must have watched the vhs 25 times at least. What a month of footy that was.

Obviously you have never listened to Goodwin then...

The old classic, do a 90 minute interview with days of prep leading in for a job you don’t even want trick. Ah Nathan Buckley and his classic pranks.

Agree with your summation, mostly.

Except Goodwin, for all his faults, was a good technician. He has multiple innovations in the game that are attributable to him. The problem imo was that he throttled the player's natural abilities to fit his system. An assistant will come with their innovations and systems, but that wasn't lacking with Goodwin.

I see the board choosing Buckley for the reason alone that he'd lean more into each player and their gifts, Geelong do this well. His media ability is the other major positive and a change from Goodwin - a strong voice and a more mature Buckley second time around is a brand the club needs.

As you said, he's been mucking around on Best on Ground and spending time with Whateley. If anyone thinks the man is not desperate to coach, and desperate to coach us, they're either insane or have an agenda.

The Next Coach Information scoreboard looks very interesting:

Facts: 2

Rumour, innuendo, groundless speculation, inflated opinion, and journalist bile 14,753

Can’t wait for this to be over.

I hope Buckley keeps a record of all his phone calls in the last month for his book on how many flags he got for us.

Maybe he can thank Caroline Wilson for the recommendation to go to tassie when he’s holding up a cup for Melbourne and tassie are last?

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
