It doesn’t really matter. Members paid for more than enough tickets even if the didn’t turn up. Crowd was big enough to pay for the food and drinks, toilets etc. No level 3 cleaning bill and probably about a 5 minute job to clean up level 2.

All things considered probably a decent result for what is never going to be a profitable home game for us.

Hopefully we can get 35-40k next week.

There will be 30k dogs supporters add 10k for us. yep could get close to 40.

Yeah, at 7am. It was vodka and something. I only had one and it was one too many.

When Langdford starts holding onto those marks, and he will, he is going to put the competition on notice. Has had an impressive 1st year.

I'm curious to see how we evolve the midfield in 2026, with Lindsay, Langford and Windsor all chances to take centre square time.

I can’t say I agree with that. If the coaches game plan only works against the wooden spoon side that’s won one game for the season, I’d suggest all it shows is that said plan is bad. If you’re fighting a war and the opposing side lower their weapons and you wipe them out, it doesn’t mean you’re anymore capable.

Not only that, you couldn't look at today's game and have any confidence in our gameplan or ball movement. We didn't look to play aggressively through the corridor, kept bombing down the line and playing around the wings.

We smashed them through experience and talent, not because of our gameplan. All year we've been hearing about this new gameplan, today was the day you'd expect to see it but there was nothing. Some forward handballs out of congestion but no different to what we were doing in previous years and hardly revolutionary.

Came down from Brisbane for this game with my young fella and after last wk I had no idea what to expect.

Very avg game up to half time but got better after that (still in the get rid of Goodwin camp).

Really enjoyed Jai Culleys first game. He did great and shows a lot of promise. Took a great contested mark too. From what I could see he played on the wing and drifted forward.

Good to see Petracca play his 21st game in a row since he came back from injury. I am sure he will be better for the run next season as his injuries would have taken a massive toll on him imo.

Overall good to get the win albeit against the 18 team and see JC debut game.

Did everything we needed to do against a side that are clearly in an experimental and development phase. To give West Coast some credit, at the game today their overlap run and quick switching into space was at times hard to stop. We were made to work hard and often couldn’t shift the zone in time for them to find a clear target inside 50 after changing the angle on us. However their back half turnovers reek of a side being coached not to win the 4 points but to take a gamble and play high risk footy at all costs. I’d argue we’ve been guilty of this this year, particularly early and have slowly tightened up despite the lack of turnaround in W/L record.

Some other observations that would be difficult to notice if you watched on TV:

  • Culley isn’t quick, but covers the ground nicely. Seems to have all the tools to be a capable winger. A couple of important grabs in both defence and attack after gut running to get into position. It looked like Langdon played the high half forward role a lot to allow Culley and Langford on the wings which seemed to work. Would be nice if we develop a couple of ‘box to box’ type wingers who are a threat aerially.

  • Fritsch must’ve had fitness/injury issues early this year. He’s now got his spring back and is covering good ground getting separation from his opponent when he roams up to half forward and wing. Hard match up when he’s on. Had a good last month.

  • Oliver might just be back. I reckon he’s actually had a really good last month or two since King’s birthday, but a couple of moments late in games stick in the mind and tend to override the good he’s done prior. His defensive running and pressure seems back to near his best, and it helps now he can tackle without running around with a broken hand. Only note would be only 76% game time so he’s still not quite back to the 2021/22 version, but it seemed like he was off for a lot of the last quarter when it was game over.

  • Petracca didn’t seem to spend a lot of time at clearance and I like it. He’s never been a great clearance player like Oliver and to a lesser extent Viney, but he’s more dangerous forward of the ball. He’s a presence around half forward and while his execution wasn’t always great, he had a bit more confidence to back his strength and power to break away a few times.

  • Petracca more forward freed up a spot for Windsor more often in the middle. He’s didn’t get a lot of it but always made something happen and it makes Viney and Oliver more valuable if they can always have Pickett or Windsor in there to dish it off to. Jury’s out on Windsor’s decision making under pressure and kicking, but there’s no doubt he’s explosive off the mark and breaks lines.

  • Didn’t think Pickett had a huge impact, but then saw he led us in score involvements and metres gained. He’s just so hard to stop now and even in weeks when he doesn’t kick a bag he still contributes plenty. Worth every cent.

  • Petty teases as a forward. Every 4-6 weeks he’ll put in a game like this that gives you hope but I’m not convinced. The guy always gives everything but not sure he’s a natural forward.

  • Van Rooyen needs to improve. He’s a handy second ruck, but struggles to get separation on his opponent when forward. Looks to be a combination of lack of burst speed and forward craft at times.

  • Turner is the real deal. Makes the game look easy. Reminds me of 2021 Lever. A couple of years ago I would’ve said Lever was in our top 3 most important players, now he might be the one I’d consider expendable considering Turner’s role and form this year and Lever’s repeated injury issues.

  • Marvel is a good place to watch the footy. Good facilities, feel closer to the action and multiple options for transport.

Petty seemed to do more of the forward rucking than Van Rooyen. Do the stats bear that out?

Actually, the reverse is true. It's in games like this against "weaker" opposition that you see what the team is capable of and what they/the coaches are trying to do.

And it's the sort of opponent we've recently had trouble with. Not today.

We beat the Eagles, who travelled from Perth, and fielded a WAFL side. Some players played well (against a team that constantly kicked the ball straight to us at a kick out following a behind). There was zero pressure from West Coast, and they were as clueless and lost as we were during last week’s fourth quarter (but for the whole game). Some ok individual efforts, but hard to rate when you’re playing potatoes. Put the lids back on.

They have been to the draft with a lot of picks for a number of years Ethan it’s not our fault that they don’t have a Jason Taylor picking for them.

Windsors attack on the ball off half back was so gratifying. It is so what we lack. Why has this not been allowed more this year? I get the opponent was sub AFL, but if he could bring this more regurlarly in the coming years he’ll give us something we are so lacking in.

It sure why Healy is calling him as a walk up inside midfielder. nevertheless it’s been a typical case of second year blues for him so I hope he goes away and comes back super fit and super strong for next year.

Focusing on the young players, because you expect our senior players to feast on the carcass of this pitiful opponent.

Culley a great debut. Took the opportunity with both hands literally. Love his height and size.

Langford a gun.

Windsor a midfielder. What a shock 🙄

Howes had a fantastic game on a quality opponent.

Chin and Bowey continued their good season.

Kosi is Kosi. A marvel. Pay him more.

Disco safe hands down back and reads the play so so well.

Overall it was nice to see those guys continue to play well and show glimpses of the future.

A real shame we didn’t play Jefferson today, but credit to Petty he was very good.

Posting from LONDON,really what did you expect from the Lurve child Petty, against weak opposition,Goodwin clueless of course Jeffo and others should have played!☠️

I'm not sure why there's so much negativity on the first half. We were up by 31pts at one stage and had the game well under control but the eagles kicked a couple of late ones. The third was great but the romp didn't really start until we kicked a few in succession from centre bounce and once we had momentum they couldn't stop us.

Yes the Eagles are trash, but that's their biggest loss since round 1 and their second biggest loss for the year. The Pies only beat them by 29pts at the same venue.

Having said all that, I really think we need to take another scalp to end this season. 3 poor performances will definitely hurt Goodwin's chances of coaching next year.

I mean, yeh that’s good.. however she’s done this for years on end and still is garbage. Only so many opportunities you can have to prove yourself before you just become a laughing stock (which happened years ago), yet she’s still employed for unknown reasons.

Without argument it was good to win yesterday. It was encouraging to see a few lads sieze opportunity and make a good fist of things.

Not looking to sad sack the event but think it has to be realised the two sides were differently motivated. If you don't understand you're not paying attention. Reality is Reality.

Will be interesting ( to say the least ) what we now can bring to the final 3 games ... against much differently focused teams.

I wish those pushing their careers along the very best of luck.

I was happy with the win, of course.

I was not happy with Petty forward, it makes no sense that you don’t play the players who you plan to be your forwards for the coming years to build them up (Jefferson). Not suggesting he’s quite there yet but experience is a big thing for confidence.

I think Simon should really be looking at the team he wants in the future if he keeps his job, instead of trying to win games per se.

Richmond are playing their new players. Yes it’s short term pain. But it will do great for them in the future.

It was a rusty start but yesterday showed we can successfully play the 'transition' game.

It was great to see players looking for targets and using precise handball or short kicks to find them. Max handballed, Clayton ran in fwd waves, tackles were broken and we used the corridor for better shots on goal. After half time it all clicked and we scored 15.7.

While better teams won't let us do that all game, I hope it gives enormous confidence to players that they can make the system work. They looked very happy.

btw, loved Max's huge smile and teammates all over him when he kicked the 'round the corner' goal. 100% strike rate using that technique 😁. I'm sure we will see more of it.

True, but what it did show was if the opposition is off or cannot apply pressure, the kids and the new attacking game plan can be devastating. When was the last time we kicked 10 in a quarter or 21 goals for the game? The week before, for 3 quarters, we played the best footy I have seen all year. The last quarter was bad, but again yesterday they showed it is coming together. Find a tall marking presence up forward and watch where things go, look at how Hawkins, Cameron, Tilthorpe, Walker, Darcy can/could set up the forward structure.

i believe the last time we kicked 21 goals was Sept 25, 2021

According to Nathan Brown, Brodie Grundy might have just pipped the AA Ruck position. He went on to say that Darcy Cameron has been good, Riley O'Brien not too bad but Grundy might have just sewn it up.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
