Great effort today but once again let down by all the same things as usual, we wonโ€™t ever be consistent till we can fix this

Seems that we are too consistent. All the same faults are constantly stated. Rectifying them is the issue.

JVR 1 mark and 3 disposals to half time.

Melb/Goodwin have successfully ruined this kid by using him as a second ruck.

Sadly, he's giving little in either role.

I hope the hand is the only issue but I just have a bad feeling. That said Iโ€™m purely speculating, zero inside info.

Club is way too subservient and meek. Easy push over which starts at the top.

It's no wonder we get rolled in the big games by officials on and off the field. Club just doesn't stand up and fly the flag.

It's beyond a [censored] joke.

Another bloody game where instead of just enjoying the contest I'm livid at the standard of the umpiring.

What's the bloody deal with umpires 50 metreS away from a contest overrulimg an umpire who is 15 metres from the cintest with an unimpeded virew (eg the Howes marking contest free) - happens every week.

Made worse when they DON'T overuse blatant howlers or missed decisions, which i thought was the only time a non controlling umpire was supposed to pay a free (the bizarre decision to pay a block against melk in one on two contest when he was clearly shoved in the back)

What's the deal with the ridiculous inconsistency (eg sparrow insufficient attempt and then no free against daicos, tracc holding the ball with zero time to dispose od it then pies players with more time and no free)?

What's the deal with ruck lotto decisions?

Whats the deal with non decisions of blatant free kicks

One of the things that infuriates me us all the AFL accredited journalists give the idea of making them full time professionals is ALWAYS rejected out of hand by almost every single one if them.

I mean it's the only logical thing to do.

And the media's half hearted criticism of the standard of umpiring as if fans are just making it up how poor the standard of umpiring is, how much it is ruining the game for fans.

Can't bite the hand that feeds.

And to be clear i don't blame the umpires. I blame the [censored] AFL.

And i truly believe they don't make meaningful efforts to improve the standards of umpiring because all of the angst and controversy is such great content.

Ive said before we need to make a folio of he awarded and non awarded frees . not just our games but happening in other games and compare them to ours. Take it to the AFL and ask them to explain.

Its hard to keep composure and not make dumb decisions when you are frustrated and uncertain of the umpiring decisions.

You play with confidence when you know you will bw given the dvantage by the umpiring and obviously no confidence when you know you are not going to get support from the umpire. The club needs to address this with the AFL and the umpires. NOt blaming the umps but asking what can we do to remove the uncertainty, frustration and subsequent poor action coming from the apparent confusion. Even commentators are expressing their views and it will be interesting to hear how the "footy shows " ie agenda setters address it.

Both the Brothers along with The Coach of C have been to the umpires and their AFL boss in a one on one and it's worked especially about diving on the player with the ball on the ground, and the pushing in the back, doing shifty stuff on and around the mark, and also playing on to advantage.

Our bombing into the forward line is really a major issue. When will the players realise it's not working

Dont know youcan say its not working when we just lost by apoint in what appeared to be a game where umpiring decisions also led to confusion and poor play

On the couch is showing our stuff ups in the final moments.

My god I didn't realise how bad tracs hand pass was or Oliver butchering the out on the bounds.

As Jordan Lewis said we had no composure.

Under Goodwin we are either miles ahead it or miles off it. No in between. We have struggled in close games the past decade. This game seemed to have shades of the 2023 finals series.

I get the desire to play him but heโ€™s had 2 good weeks, he still has to show week to week, contest to contest that heโ€™s too good for vfl.

Then we have to decide who comes out. JVR needs a consistent run now that heโ€™s come back to the team. He didnโ€™t put it on the scoreboard but he showed he was too good for VFL.

Canโ€™t drop Melk. Donโ€™t need an extra tall in for Fritsch. No one loves Petty form but heโ€™s more reliable long down the line than anyone else weโ€™ve got.

Given our midfield doesnโ€™t kick to leads weโ€™ve probably got the best combination of talls available right now.

Ive said before and will say it again Jeffo and Fritta rotate off the bench both play time while hot and off when not happening. TMac into defence with Disco in forward rotating off bench with JVR forward only not rucking. Campbell AJ or Fullarton or Verall rotating with max off bench even if only play small nimutes . Petty is Sub only. can relieve forward or back and wont have to play the whole game .

Will do my best to meet them. We have many fine musicians in Beechworth and I am always looking for recruits for IndigoFM our local station which promotes Aussie and independant musicians . We now podcast and stream and have many remote listeners.. Im happy to talk to the guys who arrange the gigs at Tanswells.

Pass my name Greg Clydesdale on to them and Im sure we can meet over a beer.

Will do. Jeff may be hard to contact. But Steve and Debbie Iโ€™m constantly in touch with. Thanks.

Pies NEVER have frees paid against them late in the game. McCreery could have run 100 metres without a whistle. It's why their under 1 goal win % is so good.

Edited by Clintosaurus

The difference was especially in that final quarter the way sidebottom & pendles used the ball so well compared to Oliver and trac who butchered it.

I'd love to ask trac what he was thinking when he thought that long handball would work & Clayton why he chose to kick in the pocket.

Simply not true, it happened last season vs Freo at Optus and cost them the game and thatโ€™s just off the top of my head

So many with self pity.

The umpires didnโ€™t make Fritta play on, Clarrie dump kick or our players rush their opportunities around goal when a bit more composure was required

Honestly couldnโ€™t sleep. Kept up all night just thinking about quelling the Macedonian fairy and negating Elliot who kills us annually and we still lost.

Canโ€™t believe GWS and others like the Dogs dropping games while we let games against St Kilda and Pies slip through our fingers.

The PSG manager Luis Enrique talked about the youthful side of PSG and how much experience it would give them playing in the big matches and then winning the Champions League, but even if we werenโ€™t winning the flag, playing finals this year would have been gold for the younger players and potentially fast tracked development for next season.

Chances after chances go begging..

We couldnโ€™t get the job done. When it was there to be won we fluffed it.

Get games into our youngsters for the rest of the year. I want to see Adams, Laurie and jeffo get an extended run of games to see what they are made of

Pretty much summed up JVR at Casey if you ask me.

We ve had quite a while to assess Roo and I for one am not particularly convinced. Yes he's only 22.

We're not playing finals.Folk just need to take that on board imo. So time for "live" examinations.

Let's see what some have, or don't and we can sort the list prior to the EOS circus. Can also start shopping ๐Ÿ˜‰

Why is May getting lippy when he didnโ€™t spread and offer an option to Max after his mark? Barely moved

Why didnโ€™t anyone present up to Max?

With the game in the balance no leaders were present. That said, the game shouldnโ€™t have come down to the final minutes.

This result makes season 25 very difficult to come back from. But stranger things have happened. Play like that against port and weโ€™ll have the 4 points.

Only IF and its a massive if WE KICK STRAIGHT!

Yep

Fair cop for some points but you do come away wondering... if only ๐Ÿ˜ช

This will seem petty (npi ) .. look Max is the closest to a living football God I can think of. But actually he's human and humans [censored] up . Tbh.. I'm with May . That couldn't have been any dumber than dog [censored] at that point of the game if you tried . It was a silly lazy kick. Max instead of getting ****ty ... own it. But it was only one of a number of moments that I'm sure a number of players would do differently if given their time over.

The greatest culprit(s) .. well we know who they are.

Umpiring was at best, a debacle. Even a few neutrals nearby were completely confused by some of the decisions today. Trying to explain the rules to a non AFL follower today was not easy.

I thought we did a lot right but failed again with our connection to the forward half. The same thing that weโ€™ve struggled with for 3 years.

What I also found disappointing at times was the safe, kick it long down the line type of play. We have zero swagger and dare. There were so many times that we couldโ€™ve tried a switch or gone shorter but opted for the good old fashioned down the line kick. The Collingwood players could see it unfolding.

Re Turner, I appreciate our requirement for a key forward. Weโ€™ve needed one since Jesse was booted. We got BBB as a rental for a couple of seasons but nobody has really stepped forward. No pun intended. My question is, do we compromise Discoโ€™s development as a key back when he could turn out as our Tom Stewart? Ask anyone involved with Geelong and they will tell you, outside of Selwood, Stewart has been the most important player down there.

Weโ€™ve invested top 20 draft picks in forwards, let them play. Letโ€™s see what we have and how to complement them come 2025 trade week. Prior to that, drop Petty. Bring in TMac to play forward as the younger guys will clearly need the support. Make Petty compete with May and Lever for a spot down back.

In the next 4 games, we should prioritise system and experience. Play younger players in roles they might graduate to next year. Roll the dice and see if we can move the ball in a way that helps our forwards. 2025 is over. The sooner the coaches let go of finals aspirations the better.

No, Disco has been our best player over the past 5-6 weeks (Bar Max). not only does he intercept and beat his opponent, but he gives us drive. he cannot be moved. He has a clear role and is thriving in it, swapping young guys around like that gives no balance and confuses them. Same as putting JVR in and out, I think we need to give him 5 weeks here and let him go. Other wise his role and synergy with teammates changes every 2 weeks, very different playing with Melk, Kossie and Petty in the AFL compared to Jeffo, Mentha and Fullarton in the VFL

ย

We lost by the small margin of a Fritta burnt teammate running into goal. Doesn't even look around for the give, he's so hungry for the goals. Absolutely killed our momentum. Burnt Kossie with the handball near the boundary too with the one he kicked. And the goal celebrations seem more about the crowd, than they do his teammates.

If he can contribute on the scoreboard for the rest of the season, come end of the year we can sell high and get a 2nd round pick back. Bring in more youth.

Same issues since 2022, more inside 50, clearances, centre clearances , hit outs, Long bombs continue, poor trading & failure to address our lack of a power fwd, itโ€™s like a broken record watching it & hearing Goodwin say the same stuff! Heโ€™s had 3 seasons to fix this! How is Jvr meant to develope as a fwd playing ruck??? Whatโ€™s stopped the club chasing players like Membry & Mcstay?? Surely our list mgt needs to be held to account or we just donโ€™t have cap space, or we are not a destination club! Our disposal by foot from our best players eg Oliver , Trac etc not up to par

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sundayโ€™s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when itโ€™s over.ย  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competitionโ€™s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fieryย interaction between Max Gawn and Steven Mayย at the end of the gameย was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourneโ€™s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.
