The stkilda loss rankles more imho

We would be 6-7 and despite the heartbreak of the 1 point loss to the Top team our season would still be alive and with some optimism

100% - I'm still dirty on the Saints loss. The loss to Collingwood stings but the overriding feeling is that we demonstrated we can match it with the best. Unfortunately we have this Saints loss hanging over our heads which casts doubts on where we're really at.

I thought the same, reminded me of the time Whitten went around before the SOO game almost 30 years ago to the day. I was getting a bit teary at the ground.

Agreed. I recall thinking last year when he was at least able to walk around that it could be the last such appearance. Seeing him being wheeled around in the chair made it seem inevitable that we shouldn't expect him there any more. I felt a little choke when the Dees ran out and Gawn made a bee line for Danners, who was almost right below us (in our customary position in the Redlegs area behind the Punt Road goals). I am sure that will be in the "I was there when ..." moments in the future.

Yes , sets a tone most definitely

Last time I looked you're under no compulsion to give the opponent the ball ( if free given )

I am not sure that is right. If you are holding the ball and the free is against you, you have to give it straight to the player indicated by the umpjire, or else it is 50. The problem with Kozzie's 50 was that he sort of had the ball while lying on the ground, which leaves some room for doubt.

He clearly drops the ball, it was 50 everyday of the week.

This is correct. The 50 was there unfortunately.

rA Nate Caddy or Logan Morris is the type of player we need to play alongside Petty.

I went with a mate to the Ess Carlton game on Friday night, and Caddy hardly even looked like taking a mark. The difference with Curnow at the other end was stark.

Firstly, we have won a close one against the Lions at the Gabba. This is the 2nd game this year we lost under a goal.

  1. Kozzy's 50m penalty waa there, but the brain fade...9/10 he doesn't do that.

Well maybe 8/10 because he did it last week.

Agree though.

Umpires umpires umpires...played a huge part in that game. Yes we could have won it a few times and didn't, but those umpires didn't help make it fair.

I want to see Langford tried as a forward...the bloke can mark and kick...how is this not a consideration?

Lindsay fine for a tackle that slipped down and a massive Dobby Hill dive is the icing on the officiating [censored] Storm. Nonsense

WTF?

That is insane

An absolute disgrace. I was already livid at him for screaming at a first year player in Lindsey after that 50m penalty and then he has a go at the greatest ruckman of all time for a bad kick in the last 30 seconds. He can go and get [censored].

Lindsey dropped his head after that spray and continued to make mistakes. As if he needed an over the top verbal spray from a senior 'leader' player.

I dunno. The last thing the team needs is players who can’t be honest with each other, or feel the need to censor themselves out in their work place because the cameras might be watching? None of us are inside the four walls, none of us are privy to the agreements and trust players have between each other and it’s the height of hypocrisy if fans are criticising May when we’ve all screamed something similar to players from the stands.

I’ve seen an ‘angrier’ reaction from Max when he lovingly shoved Goody as hard as he could with a mighty angry look in his eye after the Brisbane win. No one picked up on how ‘bad’ that looked, on camera. Just goes to show that every player is unique in the way they express themselves.

That is, given Razor Ray addressed that very slipped-tackle scenario a few weeks ago. That wasn’t a trip.

It’s a free kick, even if Hill took a dive, but it’s not a dangerous tripping action worth even a minor fine.

Why is May getting lippy when he didn’t spread and offer an option to Max after his mark? Barely moved

Why didn’t anyone present up to Max?

With the game in the balance no leaders were present. That said, the game shouldn’t have come down to the final minutes.

This result makes season 25 very difficult to come back from. But stranger things have happened. Play like that against port and we’ll have the 4 points.

There wasn’t any time for any of this as the umpire inexplicably called play-on before Gawn had a chance to even look around.

He just needed to let go quicker and he may have escaped a fine. But just compare a slipped tackle with a delayed release to no attempt to tackle and a grab of the ankle to stop Kozzie running into goal.

The latter, a deliberate intent to trip, is worthy of a suspension, but didn't even get a fine. The MRO is both corrupt and incompetent. Yes, it is possible to be both.

That's a very harsh assessment of a 22 year old who's played some ripping senior football. I was commentating on why he was selected ahead of Jefferson. The difference is JVR is potentially a far better player and can ruck so gets the nod. If AJ hadn't of been suspended I'd guess they both would have played at Casey.

I don't Rif. If Johnson was available i think he would have got the nod and JVR would have been at Casey.

IMO right now Johnson is giving us more than JVR has all season. Other than a game against a much poorer side in Sydney his performance at Casey has been average. This year his results at Casey and in the senior side have not been what we saw in his first year. No one seems to know the answer to why he has digressed into a poor KPF .

My point was Jefferson and JvR would of been at Casey with AJ staying in the one’s

We need to shop if we can. We need a main man up forward to take over from Melk but they’re nearly impossible to find.

Brown from GWS… supposedly were showing some interest. He’s got good hands, a great kick, agility and a good tank. I’d be happy if we were to get him on board.

I wouldn’t say great kick, and he’s not the smartest player. If we got him I think the aim would be to eventually have him replace Melk and have Jeffo take over from Fritsch. Kind of a swap of the current skillsets but you’ve got the athleticism of Brown and the class of Jeffo as your 3rd and 4th talls.

Throw in a JVR/AJ or Petty type too.

But still think we’re lacking the main man.

But Collingwood are damn good and they are simply so much better than us at taking their chances and closing out a game. Seen that movie way too many times.

Having quality senior players is the difference. Pendlebury and Sidebottom have 750 games between them. They're smart with ball in hand and very clean and effective with their disposals. They're also both high-disposal players, against us 29 and 25 respectively, so they have the ball in hand a lot. And it all rubs off on the other Pies players.

The nearest we have to them in Melksham, but unfortunately he's not a mid. Equally unfortunately, none of our main on-ballers have those abilities, as Petracca's errant handball and Oliver's OOB at critical moments late in the game showed. And when things are close, it's all about critical moments.

The thing that pisses me off about this game the most besides the umpiring is the demonland response to Gawn and Oliver's kicks at the end of the game.

FfS the season was on the line and we had to go at all costs. Two of the greatest Demons tried and it didn't come off for either but this idea they had to lower their eyes is [censored].

Petracca fumbled and stumbled before he got it to Clarry. Had he not [censored] that up Oliver could have had a proper ping at it and either put us ahead or got a point where we could have forced a kickout, locked the ball in and potentially got another shot on goal.

When Gawn got it we knew the time left and had to go coast to coast. We couldn't be cute about it. Had to go at all costs

They both made the right decision

Gawns idea might have had some merit.... but honestly who the [censored] was he kicking it to. He made an almost identical [censored] up earlier in the game further afield.

He's not that flash at weighting kicks

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
