Spargo was an extremely important player for us 2021..deserves a chance after nearly 18.months out..

Spargo is a very good pressure forward and kick inside 50. He muffed one today to Fritsch and missed the set shot (and last week too) but he has value in our side. His position in the team isn't cemented but unless someone can unseat him he gets a game.

Sharp was good today (proving a point to his ex-club?) and has been ok coming on as sub recently too so they could be fighting for one spot. Then you have Fritsch pushing his case and Kolt waiting in the wings but at the moment Spargo has a role in the side.

I’ll disagree on Spargo. He cost us multiple goals today and on top of that turned the ball over badly.

When Sharp was subbed, he had more score involvements, more scores, more pressure acts, more meters (Spargo was -03, I didn’t know negative meters gained was a thing), more disposals. Spargo got slightly better but he also can’t kick over 20 meters.

I’m not saying Sharp is the answer but Spargo sure as shizen is not.

But there’s lots of little things with positioning at front and centres, leading to create space, not fumbling, halving a contest, tackling of which plenty don’t show up in the stats sheet and Spargo does that way better.

Spargo has to nail a good percentage of inside 50 kicks and set shots and he did neither of those today but since the Freo game he’s been a positive. Sharp has made no progress

Shout out the the Melk.
He stated a couple years ago he was playing every game like his last.
Just keeps on keeping on.

He should talk to Fritsch about having the same mindset.

Melksham has been amazing since halfway through 2023, just a pity he did his knee in that last game of 2023!

go my little ghost sheet enjoy the win

Windsor is developing well but his kicking has been off. Can any confirm that the foot with the infection is also his preferred kicking foot?

Great win. Unexpected. Was there and kudos to the cheer squad… Last quarter noise was epic.

If the media had any cred, they would have acknowledged just how many Melbourne fans travelled to what was billed as a 5:1 against contest, but it goes against their gormless tropes. Very happy for you, you guys did us proud I definitely took notice of the strong cheers squad presence. Enjoy cloud 9.

Langford is looking like the 2nd coming of Angus Brayshaw and it's something we've desperately needed since Gus had to sadly leave us all too soon

Turner could be our best footballer

I have a bar of soap for you (Maximus-'are you not entertained' Gawn says Hi) to wash your mouth out, but seriously I have been wanting to post something similar. Turner has been a slow burn no doubt, but I really think he has something too. In the way Josh Kennedy 'seemed' to take a while to really hit his straps, the more Turner plays the more I think he is the proverbial ugly duckling, and will go onto great things.

Oliver had a player rating of 20.5 (second behind Rivers). The last game he rated that well was the night he did his hamstring against Port in 2023.

Considering I put my house, car, partner and kids on it I’m feeling quite relieved. Also I’ve now got 2 houses, 2 cars, 2 partners and 4 kids. Sheesh.

You should have called me RIF. I could have got you better odds than 2:1. Just think, you could have a harem of partners by now if you did.

Fantastic win, makes for a happy Monday! Sometimes you’ve just gotta sit back and smell the roses!

With 3:52 left in the 3rd, the way X was handling the ball gave me a James Hird type of vibe, just so assured, without the FIGJAM though. A slightly hysterical call I know (4 hours sleep arriving in Mogadishu this morning) but the body type and smoothness under pressure had me thinking. I don't care what pick Essendon gets from us, those two 1st rounds were absolutely worth it.

Saw good things from Sparrow, who continues to be the best version of himself, Rivers looked class today, McVee needs to have signed yesterday, Oliver embarrassed the commentators, May was much better (and I love how he got around Turner after the missed spoil instead of giving a bake), even Windsor who burnt a few disposals has heart, loved his diving spoil where he winded himself. Bowser's best season without doubt.

And Kozzie - that article today was a really clear response to Freo speculation. His kicking missed but he was looking lethal he is in a good place, much else to rave about, am blissing out over the result.

As much as anything, losing Melksham for the 23 finals cost us dear. Not the only factor, but a major one.

Losing both him and Petty after the game against Sydney in 23 were massive impacts on our flag chances that season and very late for us to try and readjust

He's played every game (or almost)

Still out of form, and can't kick for goal, let him find his form at Casey

He was part of a fantastic win ..maybe just trust the coaching team who know so much more than us … & BTW enjoy a momentous win .. save the nitpicking for another time ….

Just finished watching the game again and a few of my takes.
Turner's a beautiful kick.
Some asked earlier if Bowey gets easy ball.
He got 2 of the hardest ball gets with oncoming traffic ya wanna see and left 'em for dead ... Skill, bravery and toughness.
Rivers coming along nicely as a big mid.
X's gonna be special.
Langfords got it all with a nice touch of take no sheet.
AJ did well filling in ruck duties, love seeing him out there.
Oliver's on the way back.
Melks field kicking amazes me.
Fritta ... More of that.

We looked strong all over the ground.
Need to upgrade on our bottom 2 spots IMO.

The boys also look like they're having fun again.
Lots of smiles even when we were down.

Huge game for gritty self belief.
Loved that we come from behind a run over them.
Often (too often) is us who drop good leads.

We continue to put 4qtrs together we'll be tough to beat for most of the comp.
Got a nice mix of experience and enthusiastic skillful youth.
If only we could klck straight we'd be very tough to beat.

Rest of the season is looking up if they can bring the effort every week.
Not sure if we're back but it's certainly starting to look like it.

As much as I loved Brayshaw, Langfords a bigger more skilful beast.
Couple more pre-seasons and we run him through the midfield full time.
Woah nelly ...... Gonna be a sight to see.

Both Sharp & Spargo are no good. Maybe charlie finds form but he is neither here nor there.

Sharp just can’t finish.. He is the wish version of Jayden Hunt!

I see more Brayshaw in Lindsay, I think Langford is going to be Bont like (hopefully 2/3’s as good!) Bont is easily the best player of the last decade!

We’re out of the bottom 4!

In all seriousness, I can’t wait to watch this one having missed it. We have a rivalry of sorts with Brisbane and it’s become quite enjoyable beating them, but far more importantly it’s what the win signifies.

Of all the games to find something in the last, it’s this one. +9 in CPs and +13 inside 50s, for 4.8 to 1.1. Could have blown them out of the water but given they were 1st and we were 15th, beggars can’t be choosers.

We’ve won 4 of our last 5 and the 5th was a game we arguably should have won. It’s fair enough now to say our form is turning, if it hasn’t already.

Less than halfway in and we’re 1 game (and a stack of percentage) out of the 8. We have plenty to play for, even if we’re coming from too far back.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
