Johnson has reached his ceiling as a player and will be handy on occasions, Jeffo.... The Sky is his to take!

His non-selection for the Freo hit out says it all.

Jeffo will need a couple of decent Casey games. Would be handy if he could ruck.

He best bust out of the box he’s in soon.

has he?

i would have thought that aj has been playing in the 'a' forward line while jefferson was earlier in the off-season training program

need someone to make Taylor accountable - AJ more likely IMO

as a former defender, i think turner is more likely to be tried to engineer that match-up

We had 26 for the practice match so we need to drop 4 in addition to Petty coming in for Kozzi.

then pick a sub

No chance of Sharp or AJ being dropped imo

Chandler ???

Turner really shouldn't play considering his performance in the practice match and the conditions.

In all fairness, Johnson had reached his ceiling at VFL level, something that Jefferson may not have done yet (and I want him to get AFL games this year), so the sky is still the limit for Johnson at AFL level.

Absolutely, with a professional program helping him there’s quite some improvement likely. His one wood is his fierce competitive streak. Can someone tell me what Jefferson’s one wood is?

Are you referring to the freo game? If so, whilst he was pretty quiet he kept working had and ended up kicking two goals.

What do you mean about the conditions?

Both games were played in very hot and windy conditions- particularly the roos practice game.

Hardly ideal conditions for a big key forward.

The idea of Jefferson is brilliant considering we're crying out for a key forward to assist JVR who is going to be expected to take the number 1 key forward week in week out.

However, Jeffo doesn't look ready aside from a 5 minute cameo in the second quarter of the North praccy match.

AJ will debut on Sunday IMO and be subbed late in the third quarter to allow a smaller type player to play out the remainder when the game's broken open.

Strong chance of rain on Sunday.

We're absolutely kidding ourselves if we select JVR/Turner/Jefferson in the wet. Flashbacks of Goody picking Brown against the Giants in Alice where it was a bloody monsoon.

Chandler will be in the starting 18.

Has enough credits in the bank to forgo a poor pre-season game.

I'm saying that we shouldn't play three tall forwards against the Giants in the wet and I think Johnson and JVR are ahead of him.

Definitely open minded about Turner and he's the type of player that can turn a game due to his above average goal kicking and ability to take a mark.

However, his pre season series was underwhelming  (maybe due to the conditions as you've pointed out) and further to that he was never really commended in any training/match sim reports over summer which was interesting after an encouraging season.

Maybe we lower our expectations with him, in terms of him being a young player still learning his craft.

This is where I see Petty being important to our forward line if Disco doesn't work out early days.

Of the available players and based on pre season form, my 23 for the GWS game would be:

Howes May Lever

Salem Petty Windsor

Sharp Oliver Billings

Sparrow AJ Petracca

Fritta JVR Viney

Gawn Rivers Langdon

Langford Chandler Bowey Lindsay

Sub. Henderson

I agree with this team mostly but think Turner will be in the best 22.

I'm also really not sold on Howes personally and if it was me, would play Rivers more down back until McVee is back from injury.

I think that back 6 need to play with each other a bit to grow synergy. Windsor will be green through there, but have good leadership around him in Salo, Lever and May. Howes will feature this year, potentially even when McVee is in the team, so he needs some continuity at AFL level IMV.

Play Tom Campbell and Max, FCS yes we’re coming up against one of the most mobile teams in the competition let’s try and increase the lack of mobility and wonder why they walk it out of our F50 at a rate of knots

Apparently his marking ability & set shot conversion.

Derksen won't be seeing any gametime soon

Max Gruzewski will be 2nd ruck behind Keefe

He uses an iron or hybrid. Not sure he even posesses a 1 wood.

You're saying we're going to lose on Sunday?

We win and we're '0', therefore, I guess. You know; the one before '1'(*)

So if we win the flag we are zero, the runners up are first? Now I get it.

The lunatics are running the asylum!

My pick (to miss out) on the back of an ordinary performance v Freo, but I think the FD likes his defensive work.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
