I hope you all feel sorry for me.

It is my birthday, sort of, at the end of the week, but only for a second at midnight on Friday the 28th, ending before Saturday the 1st of March.

A Feb 29th baby! It’s not all bad. You only get to celebrate properly once every four years, but that’s  justification for a HUGE celebration when it does come around. 🥳

Recruited No.1 in 2022 mid season Draft, won a Rising Star Nomination in R6 2023 then ruptured his ACL in Round 8. Eagles delisted him at the end of 2024, played 12 games and kicked 7 goals for them. He may have taken a bit longer to get over his injury?

Some Eagles fans say he was slow but this was after his ACL. Hasn’t stopped him being a ball magnet in the match sims at training. Very strong body also.

Usually Cull.

I’m thinking Cull or Culls as well. Or JC.
I’ll make a point of finding out tonight at the Season Launch. I’m also currently spreading the Bison word for Harvey, so there’s no sitting around getting drunk for this little ghost, I’ll leave that to the rest of the Demon Army 🥴🤪😵‍💫

I am sure you can have at least a sneaky drink or two!

A toast to the Bison! 😁 🍻 🍺

Alas one sneaky drink for me is the equivalent of 10 sneaky drinks for anyone else. Me and alcohol aren’t besties. But the food is where I get my money’s worth. Last year I ate my own courses as well as Salo’s and his brother’s desserts 😃 Waste not want not. 👍🏽

JAHEEEEESUS H CULLEY!!😆

Hmm, been digging around for video.

Seems to be pretty good at knowing where to be. Can kick the ball a loooong way with reasonable accuracy.

The obvious limitation which gets mentioned anywhere is a lack of top speed, but he isn't too bad at those first few steps and he knows his limitation and the need to act fast.

I'm perfectly happy for West Coast to have made yet another blunder here.

Speaking of which...

Are West Coast screwed? I don't mean, 'have a difficult rebuild', but just compeltely knotted?

Their top 4 disposal winner in 2024 were Kelly, Yeo, Duggan and McGovern, and then it's Harley Reid, Witherden (who they delisted) and our old boy Hunt.

Similar story for other mid stats like tackles, clearances, metres gained - either old, Reid, or delisted.

Their goalkickers were Darling (ret), Cripps (32), Waterman (26) and injury-prone Allen (25, Restricted Free Agent)

Intercepts? 1%ers? McGovern and Tom Cole left.

I don't see the natural improvement and can't see how the three 27-year-old smalls - Graham, Baker and the seagull Owies - will change their situation a whole lot. It might suit McQualter's style and maybe on occasion they'll get momentum in a game and earn a 'plucky' win against the odds, but it won't turn things around sustainably.

It appears fate has handed Jai a new football life.

I'll go with completely knotted.

Also, inconsequential technicality, but Darling was traded to Norf  😉

One plus this year is that not playing Round Zero means the first VFL match is a little better aligned with our AFL season.

Our first match is Sunday morning 23 March against North at Casey before our second round AFL match against North at Docklands at 3:20pm.

[Not bad scheduling for once]

I don’t think so, Baker and Graham will thicken up their midfield mix, forward line is good if Allen is reasonably healthy (yes he’s had issues but there’s hope he over them) and they’ve got enough down back even if they’ll miss Barrass. I think 5-8 wins this year. Whether they keep momentum in to 2026 and can hold on to Allen and Reid is another question, because that would potentially ruin their rebuild.

by rights, redleg should be still at school 😮

Here's some highlights videos of Jai "Culls" Culley for those interested.

My apologies if any of the highlights are repetitive.

Fingers crossed that the Melbourne Demons media department do an interview with Jai Culley sometime soon. 🤞🏻

You sound like Fredric from Pirates of Penzance ....... if your old enough.

LOL

In that video against the Saints. Did he do his ACL and then go back and kick the goal?

He looked handy and a great size with a nice left foot.

They are doing a fantastic job! 😎👍🏻

Even more amazing to hear that Jai Culley grew up being a Melbourne supporter and his whole family a Melbourne supporters too! It makes it even more special!

I wish Jai Culley all the best and look forward to seeing him run out onto the MCG for the...MIGHTY DEMONS! 👹🔴🔵

Nah, he did his ACL the following season (2023) vs Richmond.

Interesting fact - whilst he only has 12 games under his belt, he has never played in a win.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
