I thought Davey was pretty quiet for a lot of the match but improve as it went on.

Poor Bruce... what a dog of a day for him.

ROBBO!! ROBBO!! ROBBO!!

More good performances from our younger squad, Bate, Sylvia, Bell, Mclean, Petterd, Paul Johnson (who took some very fine overhead marks, you may recall) all had pretty good days out.

How satisfying was it to see first Sylvia and Mclean just burst through people to set up goals, one after the other?

And special mention for No. 2. I never had the priviledge of watching Robbie Flower play, but that little re-enactment by Jones of the swivel-around-the-man move that must be Flower's most replayed highlight was something special.

Loved Holland's scragging of Rocca. too. Spare a thought for all the poor buggers who had Rocca in their dream team.

And finally, a big special mention to the defenders coming back from wretched injury runs. A lot of us, myself included, were getting the feeling we might have seen the last of both Bizzell and Wheatley at AFL level. Bizzell was good all day with a tough job to do, Wheatley was just priceless. For once I enjoyed some daft commentator chat when they started talking about Wheatley's 'Big Weapon'. (The booming kick, I'm fairly sure)

Bell - Didak to bench

Ward - unusually hit targets

PJ - Better than White

White - Down on confidence

Jones - Leaps and bounds

Holland - The Gorilla Keeper

Frawley - Would prefer Warnock (but that will change in time)

Chook - Gun at 70% fitness

Rocca - Threw in towel

Never thought we would see these 3 words next to Daniel Ward's name...........

Daniel Ward - pin point pass

Have a look at the 53 second mark of the 2nd qtr - a piece of history! D Ward kicks a beautiful pass directly into Bruce!

I am only 1/2 joshing - I like Wardy.........

And what about Wardy's brilliant spoil and fierce tackle in that vital 3rd quarter? Get off his back guys!

I was only half joking - I am not on his back - I think he has been a great servant of our club - I have said it many times before on this board. He gives his all!

Honestly - I am a fan. One of my kids even has Wardy's number on his back and Daniel is always delightful whenever he sees my little bloke - actually remembers him and says it is because there aren't too many kids running around with 10 on their backs.

He played a good game today and I applaud him for that!

ward has a pure red and blue heart, he bleeds for our club and i personally thought his efforts today were excellent. he is a hard running player who tries to always make a contest. A lot of players should follow in his on field work ethic.

Neitz - just another game

Are you serious?

Neitz was awesome today. He led up and dished off perfectly. He was crucial to us winning in the last quarter. A fantastic gutsy effort. I love McLean, but as long as Neitz is in the team HE IS THE MFC!

There is only one team I like beating more than Collingwood and that is Essendon. Looking forward to round 13 already! (A win against Richmond will be handy too!)

he played quite well the entire game, except for one terrible kick across goal. that one error doesnt make it a woeful game. other than that was good skills and contributed to many goals...

I was also at the game and can remember Davey making unforced errors by foot around the middle of the ground multiple times, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't just the one error. I wouldn't label it a woeful game, but I also don't think he played quite well & just made the one noticeable error.

Bell - well rounded game

Carroll - did his job

Holland - shut down boofhead

Ward - traded bodies with davey today. Best kicking Ive ever seen from Ward.

Bizzell - decent defenders game

Johnstone - influential before injury

Bate - vice like hands

McDonald - usual reliable junior

Davey - traded bodies with ward. Worst kicking Ive ever seen from him

Bruce - crap goal shooting

Sylvia - great flankers game (how good was the shrugging opponents and running off them to drill it onto the chest of leading forwards! That passage to Bate was simply magic!)

McLean - another great game

Neitz - is captain courageous

Robertson - robbo of 05

White - average rucking game

Johnson - steadily getting better

Petterd - not as good

Frawley - looked abit lost

Green - quiet, strong mark though

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
