So he's a restricted free-agent and I was just reading the AFL rules regarding that. We can match the offer and if he refuses to sign he must either seek a trade or enter the draft. I'm not 100% on the wording as it says national draft on one page and just draft on another.

Can anyone confirm if he can choose the pre-season draft over the national draft?

Judd's not eligible for free agency yet. If his contract expires he can nominate for one of the drafts.

I'm not 100%, but I think he qualifies as a restricted free agent because we originally recruited him off the rookie list or something. It's kinda perverse in a way - give a player a break that others are not willing to, then they are basically free to walk at the end.

Honestly, I think if he nominates a move to another club, we should play handball, match the order and see if he really wants to play roulette in the draft.

I thought that was just he had been previously desisted. Like with Jordan when he was desisted then rookied.

He's classified as a non free agent because to be a restricted free agent you need to have spent eight years at your first club and be in the top 25% earners on the playing list, but it's a similar deal in terms of how a player navigates getting to another team when they're out of contract.

The first option is negotiating a trade and if that isn't agreed upon between clubs, the non free agent can choose his contract length and dollar amount before nominating for either draft. So if McVee wants West Coast, we don't have a tremendous amount of leverage given their position in the pre-season draft.

I note his girlfriend Lily is playing for the Dees’ women’s side tonight.

Have we thought about extending Lily’s contract?

Don’t get all this talk about getting Judd into the midfield. He’s not a midfielder.

There are also other rules for rookies. The one which I thought might have applied to Judd probably doesn't:

A 2nd year Rookie not accepting a further Rookie contract will be considered a Delisted Free Agent, and therefore will be an Unrestricted Free Agent.

There is also the delisted free agent that after being delisted will be a perennial free agent for life after expiry of a contract. It's possible we might have somehow delisted Judd in order to draft and promote him to the senior list, but I'm not sure on that one.

Is on the senior list

Extremely poor today. He was so slow to make a decision and generally put his teammates under huge pressure.

Needs a coach to mentor and develop him . Same goes for Howes, Langford, McVee, Kolstrop, Lindsay, Rivers, Hrnderson, Windsor, Culley, etc. who showed a bit to start with but are now still getting a kicking from the fans.

He was up against it today. He was playing behind a midfield who were disorganised, had no system, and a team who kick short, which is how to beat us.

I thought he had some good moments when he would compete playing further up the ground.

And he may well be waiting on seeing who that might be 😉

I’d say poor, but hi season has been a 3-4 out of 10, his best we miss, how he has played this year not so much.

Would rather he stats and gets in a strong pre season, then we should see much better form!

So reading between the lines he's staying pending a new coach promising him 25 cheapies a week (I hope it happens mind you)

I hope he stays but I’m not sure Judd has covered himself in glory throughout this.

Channel your Angus Brayshaws, Jake Boweys and Ed Langdons and play where the team needs you the most son. You’ve played 60-odd games of league football after being picked up as a rookie after every other team passed on you. What gives you the right to think you can be delivering ultimatums to the footy department about where you should and should not be playing?!

  • AFLW PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If you’re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footy—you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Casey’s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down there—and good luck!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
