Melbourne Football Club - The CEO

Caroline Wilson can be a pain but she rarely gets her facts wrong.

The worrying part was the Steve Smith response to the list of candidates the Board presented to him:  Underwhelming!

Just give PJ a blank cheque to come back to the club.

We desperately need his leadership again.

Might have happened if outsiders had been elected to the board...

Surely there’s an experienced sports administrator available and willing to take the job.  Bizarre that it’s vacant to be honest.

I'm sure there are plenty. But perhaps none of them have the skill set we're looking for.

At this stage I would just love a PJ endorsed candidate.

PJ will go down in history as a true saviour of the MFC why would he risk his magnificent reputation. They don’t grow on trees but there will be one out there that has the steel and intelligence to reenergise the club and get us back on an upward trajectory. My fear is that we rush the decision and get someone who takes us back down the slippery slope of irrelevance. We have to get this right.

Steve Smith knows what he's doing. Great to know we have a proper president coming in.

absolutely critical we get this appointment right given the coaching situation and profile of our list.

no internal promotion. Chippendall has been around for the drop in standards and culture. He's out as far as i'm concerned

If it takes the rest of the season i don't care. It has to be the right choice.

Hopefully he’s in to Stuart Fox’s ear.

looks like hes lined up for HQ unfortunately

If he said the list of candidates was underwhelming, then that is great news. It means we have someone overseeing things, who won’t look at mediocrity.

It feels like we may have been slipping back into our boys’ club ways over the past couple of years, where people within the club, may have been content to ride on the coattails of 2021 and think that it’s all just ‘going to happen’. There seems to have been a fair bit of protectionism around the place - including at coaching and playing level.

Was told by an internal source last night that 4 current club CEO’s said no before even a chat or interview and that interviews took place in the week before last.

That’s the story that’s been going around for several weeks - Watts, Bain, Garlick, but who was the 4th?

Stuart Fox also said no, but he’s ex club ceo

There must be someone out there who bored with their life and wants a challenge, because we'll give you one.

The other thing is & as Brad pointed out last week our administration is all in different areas. The club aren't as one under the same roof.

But we need to nail this decision

I'm not saying this is your intention @Dannyz but some will interpret this as a problem.

This is absolutely normal. There are plenty of successful clubs whose CEOs would have no desire at all to leave for any other job, whether at the MFC or elsewhere. Indeed, we're actually doing our job properly if we're asking the best CEOs in the AFL, even if we get immediately rejected.

Hopefully this is an indication that we're casting the net well beyond the MFC circles.

Within the last few days Caroline Wilson has said that she believes Alistair Nicholson is on the short list for the Melbourne CEO position.

Oh?

No idea, it’s been alluded to in the media the last few days that an announcement is pending. I have no inside source.

I've seen Alistair Nicholson's name being mentioned as a potential candidate?

I don’t think that is an accurate summary. I think the recent reporting is that our search is narrowing down and nearing conclusion, but not that we have one.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
