I have posted on another thread that I would be open to splitting pick 5 should JT think we can pick up two quality players a bit later in the first round.

However with the reported depth of this draft I wanted to look at our chances of trading in or up in the later parts of the first round and early second.

Most clubs will be keen to do the same so the price of picks will be expensive. Going by our pick trading last year we don’t seem to mind over paying.

We are sitting in a reasonable position to trade- should we want to trade our F1st team will assume it will be a top 10 pick next year giving us an advantage over any team playing finals this year. We also have picks  38,45 and 51 this year which are decent for teams looking for points for F/S and academy picks.

Here’s some picks I think could be on the table

Lions pick 14- they have F/S in the top 5

Suns picks 13, 20,26,34(also have pick 6) they have academy player coming in and should def be willing to trade those last 3 picks.

Essendon pick 28- academy player in mid first round calculations

Then there always side deals- should the Swans try to move up they have picks  18&19 and maybe interested in trade one out to improve their hand.

Freo could also be willing to part with pick 17(they also have 9&10) to load up for next year when they are rumoured to be in for Chad Warner

So as you can see there’s plenty of scope to improve our draft hand this year, fingers crossed we manage to nail it.

Pick 25 and future first for …….?

Probably puts you in the mix for pick 13( Suns) and Lions pick 14.
We could hold onto our future first and maybe trade our future second.

Not sure many experienced footy admin would be comfortable betting that the Demons don’t bounce back in 2025, and so would put a value of pick 14+ on our F1 in 2025. A favourable draw in 2025 should also help…
Be keen to trade despite this.

There is areasonable chance that future first will be around 9 or 10

Plenty to trade for

I'd be very very nervous about trading out future pick next year unless it was pick 8 or under.

We have gotten worse now for 3 consecutive years and there's never been more drama surrounding the club.

Throw on top of that the looming court case and I think there's an equal chance of us finishing bottom four next year as there is top four. Unless we're getting a guaranteed high pick & player that Taylor considers a top first rounder, I wouldn't be getting involved in this gamble.

I agree - I think outsiders would think there's a chance we might completely implode (which we might)

Richmond are a good target for our F1, they'll have a heap of first rounders for Rioli, Bolton and Baker.

They currently have 1 & 21 and will end up with at least 3 more picks in between, maybe even more if GC does 6 & 20 for Rioli and/or Freo does 10 and 17 for Bolton and 9 for Baker.

Conceivable they could have 1, 6, 9, 10, 17, 20 and 21. They'll have at least 5 of those.

Objectively our future first is equivalent to pick10/11 and at best pick 4 or at worst pick 16

Would be bad trading to also throw in pick 25 for pick 13 IMO

Lots of team will be wanting to trade in or up to this draft. The cost of picks is going to be high. I’m not saying we should or shouldn’t but I think that’s about what it would cost.
We gave up two second rounders to move up from 14 to 11 last year.

Richmond would be an interesting one- should they be willing to trade with us for a F1st then it mean's Yze would be willing to bet against us doing well next year.

Richmond supporter Jon Ralph wrote that article on the value of those trades. GCS would be nuts to give pick 6, let alone 6 AND 20 for Rioli and Freo would be nuts to give two firsts for Bolton. Baker is worth a pick in the teens and even many Eagles fans don't want him at a higher cost than that and would prefer to keep rebuilding from the draft! I don't think the Tigers are going to have more than 3 picks in the first round, and their supporters will be desperate to get a draft haul this year imo.

If JT thinks he can get a Gus or Tracc type at 6 then we will go to the draft IMO. We were lucky the Saints and GC had wins in R24 otherwise we might have been tempted to split or trade it.

I think we will try to trade into the teens.

We may trade our future 1st rounder into an early pick??

Also have to consider we may get talls White and Ah-Mu next year so more likely to stock up on smalls this draft unless pure ruck available.

Gold Coast will pay a premium for Rioli, it's not often they have very good players heading in, remember pick 2 for Lachie Weller?

Bolton is a gun, the best player of the three and could be the ticket to an elusive Freo flag - they have the draft assets to pay up big.

Both are in contract.

Baker is a very good player and leader. He's worth every bit of a mid to late first rounder.

We'll see.

I think this strategy is a bad one. It is expensive and only made sense when we were definitely in the window. I would prefer we be more patient and focused on the long term now.

Like most years, we are seemingly on the hunt to have a better draft hand this year and have been linked to Gold Coasts pick 13 and Lions pick 20.

With FA compo for some players released today, we potentially have other picks to target. However this has also strengthened our rivals hand to upgrade their picks if they decide to do that.

GWS now have 15, 16 (perryman) and 21 (Cumming).

Saints have picks 7, 8 (battle)

Freo have picks 10, 11, 18

Swans have picks 19, 22

We have currently picks 5, 40, 48, 53 and 64. Pick 25 (now 28) was suggested as a possible trade outcome for ANB but Peatling nominating crows perhaps complicates that.

We have allegedly already put our future 1st on offer for the Suns pick 13. Can we can get another top 20 pick by moving on our later picks to Brisbane?

A draft hand of 5, 13 and 20 would be an amazing outcome in a strong even draft.

It also means you dont unearth a TMc, Sparrow, Petty, Rivers or ANB type of player...

If we ended up with 5, 13 and 20 I reckon I'd forgive the club for the complete ****show of the last 2 Months

Wouldn’t you wait to see who we got with them first?

Yeah but you could end up with a Fyfe or a Cripps or a C Curnow

Or a Tapscott, Gysberts, Strauss or Blease

That would be fantastic if the Demons could fluke something like that!

I would literally be over the moon if we could get 3 picks in the top 20!

That would be a great result, but unfortunately it would leave you stranded about 384,000 kilometres from the MCG.......
