So did Harry McKay. So did Aaron Cadman more weeks than not. Meanwhile Weid crashed packs as a junior but never moved like an AFL athlete.
 

Our recruiters have focussed on physical competitiveness too much with young key forwards IMO. I’d prefer a guy who can run, jump, has skills and flair and as long as they’ve got some courage and ability to read the play let them develop their crash and bash once they get the bodies for it.

I have doubts on Jeffo because he seems a fairly plain athlete as well as the lack of grunt. But if he can build his strength, repeat speed and endurance at least he has the skills and smarts to capitalise on it.

No that's entirely incorrect. McKay was still crashing packs at under 18 level, was doing it each week with Gippsland Power. Cadman is vanilla and will be nothing more then a good ordinary forward.

And who exactly are these competitive forwards that they've brought in? Schache? Jefferson? Fullarton? 

For me, Armstrong lacks intensity and second efforts. I see too much of Jefferson and Weideman in him. Not only that, hes a double grabber. I've watched games this year where whilst he puts himself in good easy position, he either doesn't complete his marks or double grabs.

Have to agree to disagree on Harry, but I recall at the time Ben looked the more physical and aggressive player. Harry took some great grabs but was hit or miss at the contest to me. The Weid was well known for crashing packs. Turns out that’s about all he did.

Hogan (had many other strengths), Weid, Liam Hulett!, Kentfield, Tim ‘Bull’ Smith, JVR have been a few of the allegedly physical key forwards we’ve drafted in JT’s time. 

Schache and Fullarton have been desperate throws at the stumps looking for guys with athleticism. Jackson had both but without forward craft.

I think Armstrong has a bigger frame and slightly more athleticism than Jeffo. Plus the left foot. But I agree it’s not all there. If he was the real deal he’d have kicked 4+ a week at Sandy with their quality midfield supply. I’d still be happy to take him with a late first for a team that hadn’t used 2 firsts for young talls recently.

I do kind of feel sorry for Wade Derksen.

It could of been a very simple trade.

Especially after GWS got Jake Stringer late from Essendon.

Anyway, no big loss. But a little disappointing for Wade and his young family.

Ge has been in the system for 2 and a half years without any opportunity in the AFL at one of the better lists of 2024/25.

He has similar stats to Matty Jefferson probably more versatile and is 2 years on At least. I repeat no senior AFL games yet after a mid year recruit of 2022.

Just like Matty the jury is out on his career until he gets an opportunity. Worth considering given our key position and Ruck options forward  and back and on ball. 

He. Could be a 10 year player and I value players from GWS more than half or 2/3 other Clubs in the AFL if you look at their backgrounds in development and nurturing. Funny how they have a good record in providing more than fringe players. 
Might I remind you of Frosty snd Dom Tyson both very handy players no stars but AFL calibre at two Clubs. Thats pedigree I like to take a chance on and lastly he has 3 kids and a wife plus family support in Melbourne. That may be worth a real throw at the stumps for a young man trying to get places in the AFL system. 
Let’s go hard for him.

From the footage I've watched he looks a bit like a stat sheet forward and mainly about the marks, kicks, goals. That's not a bad thing if you're very good at it but it's what these types of players do when they are out of a contest that matters. Can they get it to ground? Flick it onto a small forward? Make good second efforts and tackle hard? Or do they check out? It's something that bothers me a bit with Max King. 

If we're going for a KPF I'd love a work rate team oriented one.

I wouldn't be judging him solely on a few VFL highlight reels. Of course they're only going to show his marks and goals as a forward in such short videos... Anyway yes at VFL level he has been a consistently hit the scoreboard and competes really well in the air. We have no idea of his running/leading patterns, defensive work rate etc. based on these short clips.

If we're judging from our armchairs I would be giving a game to Derksen over Jefferson easily. Physically imposing, contested marking, more consistent at VFL level and unlike Jefferson performed really well when he was moved back down back for the majority of this season.

Did you watch the interview of BWS' list manager mentioning all the names of players where there internal improvement will come from in 2025?

Rattled off 5-6 players where improvement will come from and no mention of Wade.

Shows how much they think of him.

Just a waste of a potential recruit.

PS: I can't say much about Adams, but I am a Verrall fan and think he will make it as well.
