Great interview. Good to hear Todd, he was such a tough player

His goal in the ‘87 Elimination Final was legendary

I love Jack Viney and always tell people he is my favourite player. (Kossie is catching up.) But I am not keen for us to extend on his current contract. We need to be a club that maintains flexibility, because we are not really sure if we are still a contender or not.

I hate to say this, the decision to extend Viney was a shocker. 3 games into the season and it’s hard to see any of our 3 gun midfielders giving value from their contracts.

It's all caught up with him so quickly. It's one thing to say his kicking is poor...it always has been.

But all of a sudden he's a liability in the context and at ground level, can't create any separation around scrimmage and can't lay a tackle.

Huge part of our clearance problems at the moment.

Needs to be dropped. Give Langford his time on ball

4 years was not smart. Not smart at all. Maybe his leadership qualities will be valuable during a rebuild but in terms of on field contribution, I’m not confident we’ll get much value. Hope I’m wrong.

Serious and correct!

I'm of the opinion that you would rather have him sign that contract than leave.

And this is especially so give the what was going on behind the scenes with Trac, Oliver and Kosi in the off season.

The issue is not the contract. The issue will be if Goodwin continues to play Viney and any other seriously underperforming senior player due to the fact that he's a 'relationships' coach.

Unfortunately for Vine's, if he's not at his uncompromising and physical best at the coal face, he is rendered useless. The fact that Goody is trying to play him forward is a worrying sign.

We've never seen Goody drop underporming senior players. So I'm expecting more chair shuffling on a sinking ship. The problem is, if senior players continue to underperform whilst playing senior footy, Goody will be kissing his contract goodbye.

I have no idea where this club will be in four weeks time in regards to coach. But to me, the signs are not looking good.

Hopefully Goodwin leaves before Viney

I haven’t given up on Vines yet. Although he does need some rejuvenation

This bloke won the bnf last year. I won't write him off

Up there with one of the biggest list blunders we've made.

It really didn't need to happen.

North only gave up pick 44 for Luke Parker and Konstanty (who was a pick 20).

I'd rather Viney than pick 44.

In saying that, he's got to be better. It's not like some of his kicks were under pressure. Even when he has time and space, his kicks inside 50 are terrible.

Jack and Todd bent us over a barrel to get this contract. Totally leveraged us at our lowest. He can barely move, and he's here on huge coin for four more seasons. Heart and soul my [censored].

The only person who thought Viney was going to win the B&F last year was Goodwin. It should have been Gawn by the length of the Flemington straight.

Viney almost perfectly encapsulates Melbourne. Repeat contests, effort and emphasis on defense without a plan B, and plan A isn't going to plan right now.

I'm not completely writing him off but I do think he should be spending much more time on HF, he's not as clean as he needs to be at ground level, is a liability by foot and is getting burned for speed by some of the younger midfielders in the competition.

HFF or deep forward. Neil Bullen role.

Feel like this has to be the option. Younger gen bulls have gone past him in the midfield, and we just cannot have him kicking i50.

I love Vines and he is an absolute legend of the club, but I always thought he played his best footy when he was the brute extractor and would dish the ball out to a better kick. Maybe he could still show flashes this year, but the early signs aren’t great.

Always wished we had played him more in the f50 - he’s a pretty reliable set shot, deceptively good overhead mark, and surely at his best his pressure would have caused some chaos.

Hopefully he might still have AFL impact up front, or these next 4 years will probably be bleak.

If we hadn’t signed him already I’d offer him a 1 year deal now. Heck, get back in form and I’d give him 2 more.

Just madness that we gave him 3 more when not out of contract. And didn’t just do it, but made a big song and dance about how amazing it was.

Jack was still contracted so there was no need to extend the contract at all let alone add 3 years to 2025.

Our position should have been the same as Oliver, Petracca and Kozzie: Jack in under contract he is staying.

Some players take unders to make their team better. Some players take overs when their club is in crisis by getting their dad to write a fake contract offer from elsewhere. Viney had a rough start, but he had Paul Roos as coach after one season and has pretty much always been at a functional club until now. He's not like Nathan Jones ([censored] midfield coach, by the way) who could have justifiably walked having been put through the ringer.

Incredibly bad foresight on this extension.

He's a darling for the media as they just go on and on about his toughness but no one talks about how much of a liability he is ball in hand. I'm still shocked he won our B n F last year.

It was actually refreshing to hear Hawkins or it might have been Riewoldt ask "How does Viney reinvent himself going forward?" because we can't carry him in this midfield anymore.

4 years to go and he’s a liability in the centre bounces and no other positional options. Tim Lamb list management 101….

Geelong are well known for taking unders and Hawthorn in their glory days as well took unders to keep all their stars.

We on the other hand just give out these long term contracts on ridiculous money like its hot cakes.
