No doubt JV did a little better this week than potentially was on the table 2 weeks ago...

But I'm wrapped, ❤️💙

I doubt it.

But if true, good on him.

You clearly have no understanding of leadership, hero worship and loyalty. Look at what happened to North Melbourne when they dumped Boomer Harvey early.

Huh?

Boomer was 76 and had played 873 games when he finished. That's not early.

North dumped a heap of veterans at the same time, that’s different to Jack getting 4 years.

North also allowed Boomer to run one way for about 5 years.

The only thing worse than having no leaders is having leaders who aren’t fair dinkum.

I think it's really clear there's a trend at Melbourne where we are happy to sign players to long term contracts.
I'd be interested to hear what actual risks there are in doing that for senior leaders of the club.

No one know the details of these contract extensions. It may be that we are planning something in regards to Trade in a few months therefore we are freeing up some money next season by giving ‘club champions’ a contract at lessor (but more over the length of contract) to accomplish something else.

If not, we are giving long term loyal leaders of this club, who will become club immortals exactly what they deserve.

What is the actual waste though?

How much value would JVR have gotten from some no-name 100th pick being on the list, in contrast to a proven AFL-level forward like Ben Brown?

We’ve already got Melk doing that and a forward coach, and JVR’s had 2 years as Brown’s understudy.

Not winding BBB up at the end of last year or at worst mid season was honestly a soft decision.

Big Ben Brown wasted a list spot for about 1 good game this year. That’s the downside.

And it’s not just him.

Tomlinson overpaid for 5. Melksham, Hibberd, T Mc all signed up well in to their declines. Even if some of the had renaissances.

The more money that comes into the sport means bigger contracts and longer contracts

Why?  Because the unsuccessful clubs with heaps of room in their salary cap's are going to come at the best players with huge contracts

And it is already happening

e.g. Luke Jackson was never homesick, he left for a $8.7Million deal over 7-8 years

We let him go because we couldn't match the offer, not even close

I'm surprised that you aren't in touch more with the monetary side of things

And most of the clubs are signing up their best players past those players FA eligibility.  Why?  So they don't lose them to huge offers elsewhere

It can be risky but the bigger risk can be being blindsided where you lose a top player

I love Jack. He's been a favourite for years. I'm glad he is getting looked after and will be a 1 club player.

I'm with Deespencer though. That's a huge extension for an older player and in my opinion a bad list management decision.

Without knowing the details of the contract it's hard to judge. Jack is a great player to have around the club and today is a day to celebrate after a media [censored] storm this week.

Glad Melbourne doesn't make hard decisions like in the glory days of 2009-2013 when we got rid of Russell Robertson and James McDonald despite having forward and mid coaches at the time.

exactly. Schache is the player wasting a spot, not Brown.

Could this be the resurrection of the North Melbourne 'war chest' of yesteryear? When they trawled the competition for A grade talent with big money contracts only to find Jared Polec snarled in their net when they pulled it in.

Free agency came into being in 2012 and many thought that there would be a stack of top quality players available as RFA or FA but that hasn't happened

Nearly all the clubs are signing their best players on long term deals through their FA years.  A number would be on front-ended deals too.  Perhaps most

We're not the only club stitching up their best players.  All the clubs are doing it

As for Ben Brown, we had to offer him 4 years to get him.  And it's my bet that he earned the least amount of money in his last year (another front ended contract)

And without Brown, do we win the flag in 2021?  Well, our chances would have at least been diminished (in my view)

Exactly. We needed to offer Brown the big contract to get him across and that paid off. Most of us knew the last year would be a VFL year or injury list for Brown when we signed the contract.

I would have preferred we had another youngster in the list instead of extending Schache. He would be on stuff all player payment though.

What are you talking about? Jack is 30. Tom Hawkins is 36... Dangerfield 34, Duncan 33 and Selwood played until he was 35.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility that Jack will get another deal after this one...

Since 2007 Geelong have never made an error in running the club. Not. Even. Once!

Hope it’s not that case but if dees continue the downward trend over the next few seasons will it still look wise to have a then 33 yo still on the list for a further 2 years when we should be getting games in kids, what’s wrong with taking things one year at a time for a player of his age

If North were offering Viney 4 years at about $1Million per year, we ran the risk of losing Viney if we made a low-ball offer

At a guess, I reckon Viney's contract with us would be about $2.8Million (maybe $3Million) Front ended

So if we only offered 2 extra years the money might be around $2.5Million vs $4Million

Money talks so why would a player forgo $1.5Million?  You get one career in footy and the money that can be earned has a use-by date

What's the average Australian wage? 80 Grand?  If you're playing footy and they want to pay you, get as much as you can

But it's my belief that Viney could have made more money if he went to North.  So he's loyal and he stays

And we need him

Thank you Jack Viney what a great player you are for the MFC and thanks to our FD we have now locked in all our long term key players bar The Judd knuckles McVee but there’s still time. So JV was playing coy after the Suns game didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag. If we look after Jack we may get him through to the magic 300 club, now wouldn’t that be something for the Viney family.😁😁

I’m a bit confused 🫤

You say he’s a favourite and great player - you admit you know none of the details of the contract extension but somehow conclude it’s a bad list management decision

Bizarre to say the least

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
