Feels like Goodwin has reached the same point as Hardwick when he said he's tried to cook the sausage a thousand different ways and can't find a thousand and one.

    That’s all great and everything, but im a little sick of hearing it after results like today. Maybe the playing group love Goody because he’s a little too much of a soft touch and lets them get away with a little too much?

    I’ve never played at this level but what I knew while playing was the you should “respect” your coach, to the point that you feared them and constantly tried to gain their approval. I can’t say that i ever loved a coach but I did respect a coach enough to run through a brick wall for them.

    I know the above is a generational thing, but this team has way too many players expecting to get selected the following week no matter what their performance is like.

    Player's coach. Bit like ND. You love to play for them but they'll never get the best out of you.

    Love that Goody gave me that long awaited flag, but, more and more, I think his useby date is up.

    FF . . . there is a very high prospect of Goody's win/loss record falling below that of Swooper's this year.

    Rewriting history here.

    Actually he coached well in 2018, 2021 and arguably 2023.

    2017 was an abject failure, 2019 & 2020 were disasters, 2022 was a badly missed opportunity & 2024 was probably out of his control.

    He was given a great list & has squandered it.

    By his own admission he has struggled a number of times in 2019 and 2024, admitted to flipping back to the old game plan mid season in 24 after the new one saw huge scores kicked against, so what’s different to the current one, either it’s flawed or the players don't understand. So there will be be a breaking point and who would the candidates??

    Regardless of whether or not we have pick one, we cannot wait to start a rebuild, as next year is the ‘Tassie draft’ and as such, will be severely compromised for ALL clubs, except Tassie of course.

    We will have to trade players for picks, and as I opined in another thread, the most likely candidates are Trac and Kossie, who will (read, should) net us at least three first rounders and a second rounder in this year’s draft. There’s no time to hesitate!

    Goodwin has a horrible record at our home ground pretty sure it's below 50%

    Conversely he's had a much better record on the road than any other coach in my lifetime, but that record isn't going to look as flattering by years end.

    Some of the vision we're seeing of our efforts over the past couple of weeks is truly damning and screams of a team who don't believe in their coach, system or teammates. Realstically Goodwin has two months to turn this around before the club will be forced to make a decision.

    I don't see a way for Goodwin to resolve this with his current all positive lovey-dovey approach. At some point you need to give the players some hard truths.

    The players can't adapt to a new system and that's the fault of the coach?

    Maybe we need to identify the players who can't change and reduce their roles and/or trade

    To just blame the coach is too simplistic. There are complexities at play when adopting a completely new type of offense

    What we need to do is be patient and watch & wait

    Right now, I reckon the Board sacking the coach is the furthest thing from their collective minds

    The Board would know that the coach and the FD are trying to change and they'll also know that Rome wasn't built in a day

    Yes, a good coach will tailor the game plan to the players he has at his disposal. There is no point asking a group of unskilled footballers to be a high possession side, or looking at a bunch of plodders to be racing through the midfield and breaking lines. That's not what we have to work with.

    I'm not 100% convinced that Hawthorn's game plan will bring them a premiership, but Mitchell has them playing a style of football that is totally in tune with the players that he has at his disposal. That is what Goodwin needs to sort out and fast.

    Did it take him 50 games?

    We had to change and if we look at the 4 midfield draftees that we've brought in over the last 2 off-seasons, maybe the plan started earlier than we thought

    And of course, we are therefore a work in progress so stability at the top is all-important

    Trade out those who don't want to be part of it ... and give the coach a good go at it

    If it goes completely pear-shaped re-evaluate at seasons end

    As much as I have practically lost faith in Goody he will not be removed, if he's removed at all, until close to or at season end. I don't think a caretaker will suddenly change our fortunes (unless we have someone like Longmuir ready to parachute in) so there's no point removing him soon.

    Let's see how the season evolves. But jeez, the last 2 performances have been putrid so its going to take a lot of work to sort things out.

    This is not an overnight debacle.... this shizen fest has been years in the making.

    Hawthorn have done well under Mitchell but it's been a clear and well done re-build
    Drafted in - Barrass/Chol/D'Ambrosio/Ginnivan/Meek/Gunston (again)
    Free Agents - Amon/Battle
    All doing a great job in the team - compare that to our Free agents/players drafted in.
    They've also drafted well with Watson, Weddle and others

    Obviously they had a much better cap position to enable the rebuild but they've targeted well for the gameplan that SM wants to play, we're doing it on the run with trying to re-set and re-build

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
