Starting any post as a media company with "I still think that..." should be grounds for revocation of your broadcast licence.

    Are we to disbelieve the reports that Pert called select clubs telling them Oliver could be available?

    In the presser today, Lamb a dead set straight shooter, who wouldn’t even spin whether we were an attractive destination for players at the moment categorically denied that Pert “shopped around” Clayton Oliver. Pert may have spoken to clubs about a range of things, but Oliver was “was never up for trade” and not “shopped around”. So yes, I do not believe the reports Pert called one other club now, not even multiple clubs, Jay Clark was saying one club now, to offer Oliver in trade. Whatever happened, whatever the other club official who leaked this thought, or misrepresented, Lamb was clearly stating today we weren’t offering Oliver for trade.

    Whether Pert made a mistake and was drawn into a conversation about Clarry’s value stupidly given he wasn’t tradable is the only remaining question. This is far more a media than an MFC circus. Only possible one at fault is Pert.

    The only MFC public statements from Richo, Green and Lamb have been 100% consistent. The rest is unconfirmed media whispers. 

    I can't help but feel that most of this rubbish from both Tracc and Clayton's fiascos has been stirred up by their player management group. I.e. same company.

    Didn't a poster on here say that a question was asked about Oliver a couple of months ago and the club didn't shut it down? I think it's pretty obvious that Geelong contacted us about Clarry because it's been common knowledge they have been after him for a while. It sounds like lamb is telling the truth when he says we didn't shop him around. The question from Geelong wasn't shot down and then was leaked which is why Melbourne look really bad. It sounds like Geelong are just feeding the media in the hope we will crumble because of all the bad press.

    According to Andrew Mackie Geelong was contacted by Oliver's manager who thought it might be in Clayton's best interest that he move to another club. 

    Bear in mind that his manager would pick up 5% of a new contract.

    Tim Lamb said Clayton was not shopped around. I believe him. I do not believe Pert made phone calls as McClure claims.

    No one should take Sam McClure seriously. Using the word "journalist" in the same sentence as him is not advisable.

    Clarry with be at MFC next season and I am tipping he comes back with some good form in season 2025.

    This whole thing could have been handled way better if we just carried the Paul Roos mantra of 'anyone is tradable for the right price'. Would take all the pressure off the club for 'shopping players around' and players would never feel like the club is dealing behind their back. If a player gets chased while they're in contract you just tell them its fine and they can explore it but the deal has to work for us. All the secret dealing behind the scenes, leaks to the media followed by emphatic statements just make the club look silly and rudderless as soon as circumstances change.

    Well said. We don't need club officials coming out and saying "We love Clarry". Clubs and players need to be more mature about what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to trades. And it's a two way street. 

    The reality is that if Richmond or North had shown interest, and were prepared to offer a fair trade, then the club would have been happy to trade him. Once Geelong became the only suitor, a trade was never going to get done.

    Lamb and co. can deny that Oliver was "shopped around", but we wouldn't have 100 pages of "Oliver trade rumours" if he wasn't. It's naive for people on here to think that it was a media beat up.

    I think it was probably a joke. You don't get to change your mind after you have done it, and I suspect it was like the occasion where he clutched at his hamstring at training as a joke.

    It is Media Management 101 when you can't definitively answer:

    You don't lie, and you don't tell the truth. You dance around the truth and sit on the lie. 

     

    Key messages:

    Clayton is very important to our team, he's highly valued by us and we love him at the club.

    Trade period is the only time of year where teams can come together to talk about improving their lists.

    During trade period you get trade offers, and you might spend 5 seconds or 5 days weighting up that offer.

    We are not actively seeking to trade Clayton.

    We can't stop teams from actively pursuing him or any other player during trade period.

    I reckon that's funny and shows how Clarry likes sticking it up maggots as well

    This will be hugely unpopular, but I believe with limited knowledge of the internal situation, that Melbourne will regret not trading one or more of Clarry, Trac or Kos. I have a feeling that one or more will request a trade next year.

    I hope you're wrong as well, but think this is extremely likely, mainly because I don't think we're ready to bounce back and win finals in 2025. 

    But I'm not convinced that we'll regret not doing it this year. Oliver is surely at his lowest 'value' in a decade. I have extremely high hopes for an exceptional Pickett season in 2025. Petracca may struggle to get on the park, but who was going to fit him into their cap and offer something enticing this year? All are in contract next year.

    We'd likely be getting unders for all three this year so not sure why we'd regret it.

    if we crash and burn next year then I’d trade one or both  for 2 very high picks each, I’d just be on the front foot about it and own the decision across the whole club. Crash the media by spelling out what we’re doing and why. I’d do everything possible to keep Kozz.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
