So just the footy department heads? And the reports that Goodwin doesn't approve of this move aren't true then?

None of this information is public so we have no real info, but from what's available elsewhere Goodwin would just be one vote amongst the 4. Which is to stop coaches driving the list off a cliff for short-term gains.

In any case, putting two and two together, whatever Goodwin's feelings are he has to support Oliver publicly in case none of this goes through and they have to work together going forward.

I still think the calls to Geelong are a very very last resort. Whatever happened to Adelaide?

Unless I'm missing something, we don't know who was contacted but it wasn't just Geelong.

Any word from this magical meeting that was supposed to happen to determine his future today?

Pfffft.  Of course not.  It's not as if the MFC ever leaks, no siree.

Media pundits and some posters are talking as if Melbourne have no choice but to let Oliver join Geelong for whatever scraps we get in return.

Not so. It's time to get tough, tell other clubs to back off, and warn Oliver that the club will fine or suspend him for any further infractions.

Melbourne have given him a contract that ensures he can retire from  a game a wealthy man.

The club has also gone out of its way to support him when he experienced off-field problems that have had an adverse effect on the team's performance levels.

Metaphorically  speaking, his response is apparently to kick Melbourne players, officials and fans in the teeth.

The notion of letting him leave for a likely mid-teens future draft pick, while still playing a hefty chunk of his salary, is frankly insane.

Having seen how the Petracca and Oliver sagas have played out, one thing is now certain. Very few clubs, if any, will be offering seven-year contracts, even to superstars.

fine him into submission, play at Casey till you earn it

Allegedly

I'll get shot down for this I'm sure, but if the Dees Trade Oliver to Geelong, I'll be done with this club.

This is the first time in my 20 years as a member that I have even considered such a thing.

I will support the club but I understand why some supporters do this.

The club gives me the [censored] but I just can’t bring myself to not have a membership and support the club.

If Geelong want him, they have to ruffle the feathers of one of their own star players by telling him they want to trade him out for Clayton Oliver. Surely our club can manage taking a hard stance on this?

If they finished in the bottom 4 and we demanded pick 4, it would ruffle half of their fan base, but that has to be the cost of doing business. With only pick 15 or a future 1st, they surely don't get what  they want without sacrificing some of their own relationships to get it across the line.

Only goes so far with ADHD (though can certainly help), and there can be side effects which might be incompatible with elite level sport. But biggest issue is consistency, with many people stopping their medication or not taking it as required.

Would love to hear how Goody really feels about this, it basically stamps his papers for the end of 2025.

We won’t be able to rise from this mess due to fatigue and also lack of available talent.

They clearly had planned to top up and go again, We might be left with no choice but to go nuclear

Makes sense to me. Brutal but not sure there were many options at the time. His trade value last year compared to right now is stark in comparison.

Wrapped our arms around him. Played him throughout the season to keep him engaged and motivated even though he wasn't in good shape. Talked him up to media every chance we had.

I can see how the playing group including Trac would not have been happy with this. But its now time to move on.

To be fair there was no-one else beating down the door to step up in the midfield

The Demons could still be prepared to keep Oliver due to Simon Goodwin’s strong relationship and belief in the brilliant onballer who has endured some personal problems off the field.

Geelong would have to consider the resources and support Oliver would need at the club if he is able to complete the trade to the Cats.

But the problems at Melbourne go well above the senior coach as Pert called at least one rival club with the list management committee’s full support in the hope it would be kept quiet.

But the call was leaked to the media, prompting Oliver to speak with Geelong chiefs and players on Tuesday. In the two days since, Oliver has been prepared to assess whether he can play in blue and white next season.

A trade, while it remains incredibly difficult and far from certain, would be one of the biggest bombshell exchanges over the past decade in the AFL.

It could see Geelong land Bailey Smith from Western Bulldogs, Carlton’s Jack Martin, and Oliver, who is one of the top-three on-ballers in the game at his prime, over the next fortnight.

But any trade would go down to the wire as the Cats believe the ball is in Melbourne’s court now after considering trading him to either Adelaide or St Kilda last season due to some behavioural concerns and professionalism problems.

Oliver has addressed those problems this year, although they remain a work in progress.

Collingwood traded gun pair Adam Treloar and Jaidyn Stephenson, sparking outrage across the industry in 2020, but won the premiership in 2023.

Melbourne is currently in the process of reviewing the football department amid serious concerns about the club culture.

There is a view at Melbourne the club needs to make serious changes after failing to win a final in the three years since the 2021 premiership

I've been a member for 35 consecutive years since I was a kid, this is the first time I've seriously considered not rejoining. I couldn't go to many games this season and the club is a basketcase, not really sure what the point is.

As I had said earlier,  ok he might want out , but why do our gu s sign lo g term deals then want out , wtf ,  if we let them go for donuts I am done, financially that is .

Medication itself is not a silver bullet.  Structure, exercise, figuring out works best for themselves any day of the week, support network (both formal and informal)... There are over 200 genetic markers for ADHD and each person has a different mixture, nevermind the environmental factors, the experience of societal stigma, and how symptoms can change across a person's lifetime (and also affected by lack of sleep, hydration, diet, stress etc).  What works one day, one month, one year may not work the next.

It's not to say that a person with ADHD does not have personal responsibility and accountability, just that even in good scenarios it can be a handful.

It's no surprise that a lot of the issues about and surrounding Clarry correspond to the time he gets his first significant injury (and the loss of structure and routine that comes from that).

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
