The possible Oliver trade discussion really helps Geelong.

No doubt the Dogs think pick 15 is not enough for Bailey Smith and would be angling for 15 + F1 with the Dogs F2 back.

The potential Oliver trade quarantining F1 torpedoes this Dogs' idea.

Likewise the Smith trade torpedoes MFC negotiating decent value for Oliver.

it depends on the extent to which the club wants to move him on and make a fresh start. if we think he's too mcuh of a disruption such that keeping him around is just not worth it then we'll have to take what we can get.

Saw all of the insta photos of him getting his haircut and posing with some bloke I’ve never seen who appeared to be his +1 but I never saw him on the Dees’ table and nor was there any account of him on Gawn/Lever/May/Viney accounts or the Dees’ account?!

 

A player like Windsor must be looking at this all and wondering why did I recommit so early...

We did. He got warned last year at trade time and agreed to certain things to make it work, we kept him on that basis and it sounds like he hasn’t held up his end.

Why are people so concerned with him playing well for another club? WHO CARES?? Much like the [censored] around and find out graph, there comes a point where talent no longer outweighs drama and I believe we have reached that point.  He clearly cant be trusted by US and thats what it comes down to. If he is a changed man and gets on the straight and narrow at Geelong so be it but clearly the club believe its not going to happen here if we trade him. We only know about the issues in the media, im sure there is plenty more the club has covered up for Oliver over the journey.

Good question and interesting thought experiment - I’ve often thought about this. My thinking was:

- maternal grandfather and family all mad Tigers - rich history, close to the G, close in terms of suburbs. Don’t hate the Tigers. Fans have got a bit obnoxious after 3 flags (wouldn’t we all!)

- up until the Maynard incident, was coming around to them - rich history, good song, good team, parental grandfather Pies, wife and family Pies

- Lions ? We’re 3 hrs south of Bris, Fitzroy connection

- I’m 90mins south of Metricon so the Suns, but just no 

- Swans for South Mel connection, range of pros and cons

 

id much prefer we got ourselves sorted out and run like Geelong 

How did it not leak earlier about Clarry at the Brownlow?

He has to be the most watched player in the league in terms of off field behaviour, and there would easy be 1000 players, coaches, partners and media there. Surely someone would've said something earlier.

I've never met Clarry but from what i've heard others say he's a good lad. just very immature. I wish him no ill will at all.

A good woman could be a stabilising influence but there doesn't appear to be one in his life at the moment unfortunately. 

Perhaps Geelong is a good destination for him. Get away from the temptations in Melbourne. It might help him to grow up.

In the vast majority of cases, yes. You wouldn't want the top level getting involved at a level as granular as determining list needs, or trying to court a big name player.

If this is about behavioral issues, the admin and CEO set the direction and if clear standards were set that have been breached by Oliver and the coach/footy dept are unwilling to take action then that's a problem.

That is to say that it's not Pert's job to actually start fielding offers from other clubs and going over their heads is a disgrace. He needs to trust the list management and coach to get that done.

Real dogs breakfast this situation.

Ultimately if playing group has run out of patience with Oliver then his time is up. Goodwin and other coaches just have to accept this.

Its up to Connor Sports to work out a deal where Geelong pay all of whatever contract he agrees to and Geelong provides acceptable trade return.

We get cap space, trade return and much needed clean air.

Geelong get Oliver and associated ongoing management of his non football issues to add to Stengle and Smith. It might work. It might not.

But all this year did was tank his value. The choice is to move him out for chips now, or hope he can cash in on his seeming better attitude (but acknowledging its still not great) and doing a preseason to then trade him for at least some semblance of value.

Unless he is having an absolutely toxic effect on the group, why would you throw him out for nothing? It will kill our list going forward


I've lived in the Geelong region for more than 40 years. Most of my mates are long time Cats' members, and a few belong to coterie groups. I know the families of a couple of the players as I taught the sons. I receive quite a bit of intel relating to the GFC. If Geelong wants a player, they'll get him. Money talks. I have no doubt that one of the attractions that the Cats offer is cash or 'product' - and heaps of it. Obviously outside the salary cap. A huge grocery supplier, a large car dealer et al. throw $millions at the club.  Jobs and cars to family members, and on it goes. When their former CEO was courted by Carlton, Costa doubled his salary. If Geelong wants Clarrie, and he wants out, only the MFC holding him to his contract will prevent it.

It's a big challenge for clubs in our position. There's only one short player movement period when they have an opportunity to take action.

Oliver played all season and that was good for his progress, we saw that he went off the rails last year when playing was not possible. Recently playing has stopped again and it's possible there are signs that he's not progressing well any more.

The club has to read the tea leaves and make a decision if that's the case because there's only one short and imminent time for action. We can't just wait and see how the summers pans out.

The count itself is only a few hours of the festivities.

 

Deep breath.  It’s difficult. I agree it’s gut wrenching !!  We love the MFC.  We are a kicking bag right now, as through many issues from js29 to Trac to now Clarry, it appears to be in completely mismanaged.

People questioning the club over possible trade… what’s the responsibility on the  player who has been well supported by the club and may still not be meeting certain standards whilst other senior players are busting their back sides.. comes a time were players need to take responsibility, this is how you build culture

    Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

    Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
