What. Are. They. Smoking???

North are prepared to offer their future 1st, which could be quite high next year.

Honestly, is this trade period even going to be much to write home about? The last thing we need to do is get involved in trading in for the sake of trading in.

Houston was the one proven quality player that could make a difference, after that who? Kennedy? Owies? Macrae? Everything else is speculative.

We need to strengthen our draft hand and put in the hard yards now. A couple of picks in the top 15 with potentially one in the 20s would be desirable.

Hopefully we're involved in the background of a few deals in order to move up the draft order. The true hope is that we're under the radar for the majority of the week, but end up with a decent draft hand, that we can even use to our advantage under the pressure environment of draft night.

So it’s idle speculation.

Much like Carlton trying to get GC’s pick 12. What can they possibly offer that would be enticing to GC?

Agree Dr M.  Dees need to reassess after JT has worked through the best options and strategy.  Might not be worth jumping 5/6 spots if we give up a lot.

I’d imagine they’d want Port’s future first back and are probably planning to give over a pick from 3-8 for a pick from 9-15 back, it’s not a bad idea at all.

I suspect he’ll choose Carlton but good on North having a decent crack.

Rivers - Fast and agile but avg by foot
McVee - Slow but evasive (not to be confused with agile) and ok by foot
AMW - Avg pace, agile and avg by foot
Bowey - slow not agile avg by foot
Salem - slow not agile avg by foot

Yikes.  This seems a bit harsh!

I actually think McVee is faster and more agile than Rivers - just doesn't (yet) have the tank to play midfield.

If Bowey and Salem are average by foot, then why are they in the team - surely that is their strength?

Average AFL by foot is not necessarily bad, it just highlights that they are not exceptional which is what a Houston or Sicily is.

Also if we made the comparison internally then they are in the team because they are probably our best kicks. And therein lies the issue, our best ball users in the club are really only average at AFL level.

Carlton don't have perceived arrogance. Just out and out arrogance bordering on hubris.

Port would be crazy to trade him to Carlton for “a first round pick” and Matt Owies, who Carlton don’t even want. Would be a huge leg up for a direct competitor for the flag. How do Carlton even think it is worthwhile to bother Port with that offer?

In that same segment Edmund said that we’re not necessarily giving up on Houston and that we’d consider trading two first rounders…

I reckon if we can get the Lions first round pick for pick swap to help them with points for Ashcroft, that he might look to trade that pick and a F1 for Houston which would trump Carlton’s offer.

I reckon he stays at Port. Clubs in the position of Port should dig in more for gun players that are well under contract.

I don't think clubs will satisfy their demands. Port have every right to ask for a big price for a reigning 2X All Australian who literally won a game off his own boot from 55 metres out at the MCG one night.

Maybe Carlton being nuffies will open the door back to us...

I wouldn't want to part with more than one first rounder though.

5 should go on the best player we can get our hands on this year in the draft.

And we need another pick inside 25 to land another like Cooper Hynes.

Then if Port dropped their high starting point (although given he's contracted they probably don't need to), we could land 2 young mids and an elite user that can play between midfield and half back. That's a solid injection of talent.

'two first rounders' could range between Pick 1 and Pick 20 something...

We need to take Pick 5 to the draft.

Port would be loathe to take a future 1st as with such an even comp its hard to predict where bulk of clubs will finish in following season.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
