Sounds like we're trading for him and we're probably going to have to make peace with the fact it will cost us pick 6.

That may go down as a blunder in the futureย

ย

If we just hand over that pick 6 to Port then I will be annoyed. We'll band-aid one area while surgery is still needed.ย

I'd prefer Bergman but you can't buy what's not for sale.

Our pursuit of Houston would have started a while back, at a time when we would have expected our first round pick to be 10-12 or something.ย

As the season has fallen apart, and that pick is now 6 with a possibility of becoming 5 (or even 4 if we want to get really pessimisticโ€ฆ), the club may well have had to reconsider.ย

Iโ€™d sure hope so, anyway.

If it was pick 16-18 thenโ€ฆ maybe

pick 6 should be better than Houston in this draft.

go to the draft, offer a second rounder at best.

nga and the f/s pickups later.

If that happens Iโ€™m sure a future first would be sufficient if that was the consensus value, I think most in the industry donโ€™t think dees will be contenders next year so in there mind we will be round that mark or worse

Twist in race for Port star, Pie weighs options, Tigers' bid to keep mid - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1195697

THE UNCERTAINTY facing Melbourne's off-season has thrown Dan Houston's move to the Dees into question, with other Victorian clubs expected to enter the race for the Port Adelaide star.

ย

Houston has eyed a return to Victoria, where he has a strong pull back home, in recent months, with Melbourne his fancied landing spot. Rival clubs expected the move to be all but locked in.

ย

However, the Demons' tumble down the ladder out of the finals race, coupled with list uncertainty on superstar midfielder Christian Petracca, has raised doubts over Houston's preference for the Dees.

It is a significant twist that opens the door for other clubs to enter the conversation for Houston if he continues to pursue a move back to Victoria or could even see him end up remaining at Alberton Oval if no club is willing to offer considerable draft capital to make a trade happen.ย

The Power have been targeting Greater Western Sydney's unrestricted free agent pair Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming, even before Houston's Victorian intentions were clear.

ย

They would need strong draft return to part with Houston, who is contracted for four more years and enjoying career-best form over the past two seasons.

ย

Richmond (pick one), North Melbourne (two), St Kilda (five), Melbourne (six), Essendon (nine), Carlton (10), Hawthorn (11) and Geelong (15) are the Victorian clubs currently holding first-round picks, although the Hawks' selection will be the centrepiece of their offer to West Coast for Tom Barrass. โ€“ Callum Twomeyย

You beat me to the punch posting thisย @Nascentย ๐Ÿ˜…

Personally I donโ€™t think this is such a bad thing as Iโ€™m increasingly coming to the view that we need to use our first round pick at all costs, and try to manufacture even more first and second round picks if possible. And trading for Houston would put all of that in jeopardy.

But jeez it stings a bit that we might be becoming a bit of an undesirable club to land atโ€ฆ

ย

I guess I just don't know enough about Dan Houston, because I keep hearing about our first pick being used and I just don't understand it. Would love it if someone on here can sell it to me versus going to the draft.

Well there you go. Works out well if that's the case!

We don't need him.ย  Play Petty back and use our first pick on our next elite midfielder.

Completely different player to petty?

Just get Trac to bake Houston a cake and all is sweet.

Surely Houston is more concerned about the last two weeks and finals instead of worrying about us right now.ย

Thereโ€™s something in the water in SA. Is it crack? Possibly.ย

Well if Houston is having doubts about us, other prospects will be too. What a shamozzle.ย
ย

Could he a blessing in disguise as pick 6 is overs for him. The way the media saying this is fair value (with ANB as part of the trade) is laughable. Where do they come up with this nonsense. The bloke is good - yes - but is 28.ย

I think our plan would've been pick 12 and ANB (directly or otherwise).

At pick 6 it just isn't worth it for us and Houston suddenly has to be worried about our future even though we nearly beat Port with no May, no Tracc, Oliver stuffed etc.

I'd still really like Houston, but I can see why it might be off for all 3 parties involved.

Plus he just played us and they limped over the line.... so can't think the place is that big a basket case!

I'd suggest not listening to the media for approximately... the rest of your life. It is much more relaxing.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
